2 Page 2 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY Tamil Cinema and Music - 17 M. T. Rajen, a successful Madras city electrical contractor, promoted Vel Pictures with his pals C. P. Sarathy and P. V. Das, a businessman from Andhra and film exhibitor. Rajen had interest in cinema and ran a distribution company and also offered electrical maintenance services to cinemas in the city and elsewhere. The talented trio, Muthuswami Iyer, K. Ramnoth and A. K. Sekhar, joined them and a joint stock company, limited by shares, was promoted. Interestingly Iyer met with S. S. Vasan, then a prosperous magazine publisher, successful horse racing man and owner of an active mail order business, and tried to persuade him to take up shares in the new film company. In what could be called the understatement of the decade, Vasan told Iyer, Why should I dabble in films? I don t need it!. As Iyer recalled to this writer decades later, the future Indian movie mogul and the Gemini Studio boss wished to have nothing to do with pictures! Strange are the quirks of Dame Destiny Vel Pictures had its own studio, which was then situated on Eldams Road, Madras in the sprawling bungalow of the Maharaja of Pithapuram. That area was then sparsely populated and well wooded with hardly any traffic. Indeed at the back of the studio there were open lots and also a pond where much of the outdoor shooting was done. Dandapani Desikar played the role of the saint Pattinathar in the movie, and the other artistes in the cast were M. Harihara Bhagavathar, Master V.N. Sundaram. (Later a noted playback singer and also actor), P. G. Venkatesan (a fine singer known as the Saigal of South India), T. R. Muthulakshmi, and Radhabai. Most of them were drawn from Tamil theater and faded after one or two films. The film was directed by Rajen assisted by Ramnoth who handled the camera, Iyer and also Sekhar. The movie was a musical and had the original compositions of the saint himself. Some other songs were written and composed by Papanasam Sivan. Pattinathar (1935) was a major success and established Desikar as an excellent singer-actor on the ladder of success. The impact of the film was so great that many young men and also married ones gave up active life and donned saffron robes! (However there was considerable criticism about the casting of the singing star as the saint. Desikar looked too well fed and even paunchy to portray the thin ascetic Pattinathar. Some of his close friends began to call him Pattina dhadiyan! ( Dhadiyan in Tamil means a fat fellow!) After this initial success Desikar began to attract the attention of Tamil film producers. They planned to make films based on the lives of religious persons and saintly beings in which there would be ample scope for the singing talents of Desikar to be exploited successfully and profitably. His next film was again a musical, Vallala Maharaja (1938). This film brought about an important event in his personal life. Along with a role in the movie, he also acquired a lifetime companion, unwedded wife, as a personal friend commented! The heroine of this film was M. S. Devasena, a modestly successful actress of 1930s. She hailed from the traditional Devadasi community and her original name was Krishnammal, which was changed to Devasena when she began to act in movies. She attracted attention when she played the heroine with M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar in his successful film of 1936 Sathya Seelan. She was not the conventional movie land chocolate and cheesecake beauty but she had good features and a bountiful figure. After the 1938 film, she acted only with Desikar and lived with him as his second wife. During the 1930 s, Dhandapani Desikar played the lead roles in two more religious folk myth movies, Thayumaanavar (1938) and Manickavaasagar (1939). Then came his most successful and popular movie that is remembered to this day. That was the Gemini Studios - S. S. Vasan production Nandanar (1942). New Vinayakar temple in apartment complex Kumbabishekam was performed on June 15 for a Vinayakar temple constructed at a cost of Rs. 2 lakhs in the premises of Sai Castle Owners Apartment Complex (17, Ganapati Street, West Mambalam). There are major leaks in both the water and sewage pipelines leading to contamination. In spite of several oral and written complaints to the concerned officials of Metrowater, no measures have been taken to rectify the problem. A test pit dug by Metrowater ten days back to locate the leakage is now filled with sewage water and no further action has been taken. The residents are forced to buy water at expensive rates from private suppliers. I request Metrowater officials to immediately plug the leakages and arrest the contamination. - R. Relocate garbage bins away from park Sir, Kittu Park (Ellaiamman Koil Street, West Mambalam) is well used by children and adults during mornings and evenings. The dustbins kept inside the enclosure along the compound wall of the park needs to be relocated. The garbage that gets scattered at the time of loading it onto lorries is not cleared promptly and this causes pollution and foul smell. This affects the nearby residents and visitors to the park. Missing boy from T Nagar found in Madurai Yogesh, a Std. 9 student and resident of Karnan Street, T Nagar, who went missing on June 6 was found in Madurai Railway Station by the local police on June 10.
