Those who are interested in contributing books for the library may contact him in or Helmets must for 2-wheeler riders from July 1 Two-wheeler riders in Tamil Nadu must wear helmets from July 1 or risk impounding of their driving license, according to a Madras High Court order. Observing that it was disheartening to note that a number of precious lives are lost due to non-wearing of protective headgear as mandated under Section 129 of Motor Vehicles Act 1988, the High Court made it clear that wearing of helmets by twowheeler riders is a must and documents including driving license must be impounded in case of failure to do so. Justice N. Kirubakaran directed the Central Government, besides the Secretary, Surface Transport Ministry, to direct all States to monitor the compulsory wearing of helmets and take action. The judge, who allowed a civil miscellaneous appeal, directed the Home Secretary and the Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu, to announce through the media that wearing of helmet by two-wheeler riders is compulsory from July 1. Justice Kirubakaran said that neither the authorities act as per the statute nor follow directions issued in this regard. The order was passed by the judge while allowing an appeal filed by the legal heirs of N. The court directed the Central Government to go into the details of the design of the helmets to provide clear visibility for the wearer. It further directed the Home Secretary and the Tamil Nadu DGP to instal CCTV cameras at important junctions and roads, including national highways, to monitor wearing of helmet by two-wheeler riders. Those who fail to wear helmets have to be issued notice and license cancelled after inquiry, it added. Cash awards presented to Veda student Rig Veda teacher B. 4 Page 4 June 13-19, 2015 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY G. RAMANATHAN - 33 The major attraction in Raja Desinghu was its soulfully melodious music of G. Ramanathan. The film had as many as twelve songs composed in various classical Carnatic music ragas, and many of them became popular. One of them was the grand Bharatanatyam classical dance exquisitely performed by the legendary Padmini, and the voice off screen was that of another legend of classical Carnatic music who also had an active career, playback singer M. L. Vasanthakumari. The song and dance sequence Paarkadal alai meley, rendered so melodiously by MLV was a raagamaalika and included Shanmughapriya, Kedharagowla, Saama, Ataanaa, Mohanam, Bilahari, Kaanada, Kaapi and Shivaranjani. The lyrics as by Thanjai Ramaiah Das and the dance was choreographed by another legend of Bharathanatyam teachers, Vazhuvoor B. Ramaiah Pillai. Sadly this song had unfortunate consequences and was not screened along with the main film. The film was in production for three long years, mainly because of misunderstandings between the producers and MGR over many issues. That was a period when MGR had an atheistic stance of life and outlook, and objected to the song highlighting Dasavatharam in a film in which hews the hero and the main attraction. That was not all. The dance sequence had been shot at first with Padmini being paired as the heroine with MGR. However, she was taken off the role and made the heroine against S. S. Rajendran who was a Muslim in the film and Padmini s role was named Ayesha. Bhanumathi stepped into the role of the main heroine against MGR who rightly pointed out that there could not be a Bharathanatyam piece of Dasavatharam performed by the Muslim character named Ayesha! The sequence was therefore clipped off and Lena Chettiar and others screened it separately in the movie houses during the interval or after the film was over! When the computer disc of this film was released, this dance sequence was missing for the same reasons. Another song which became popular was a duet filmed on MGR and Bhanumathi Sarasaraani kalyaani in the raga Harikambodhi sung by Bhanumathi and C.S. Jayaraman. This song too became a hit. Another song filmed with S.S. Rajendran and Padmini as the Muslim couple and Bhanumathi and MGR, Vanamevum Rajakumari was also a hit. Indeed the song was sung by four persons which was a novelty. Because the film was in production for three long years, in spite of the fine music of G. Ramanathan, it did not enjoy more than 10 weeks in some places which, for a MGR movie, was considered not a success. In the film, MGR dies and it never happens in his films! This was another reason for the cold reception at the box-office. (In an earlier movie Kalai Arasi, MGR played a double role. One MGR dies, and instead of showing him dying, he was shown as ascending the sky to became a star the distant firmament, thus becoming an immortal. The film sank without a trace and people called it Kalai Arisi!) The off screen singers in Raja Desingu included, besides C. S. Jayaraman and MLV, Jikki, Sirkazhi Govindarajan and of course Bhanumathi, a talented singer. Besides being an excellent actress she always sang in her own voice. Raja Desinghu is today remembered for its music and hit songs and also for the dance sequence of Padmini which can be watched separately on the Internet today. K. Nagar at 4.30 a.m on June 11. Windshields of the buses were shattered but passengers were safe. According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred when the MTC bus coming along 2 nd avenue was taking a right turn towards Vadapalani. Taxi driver held for stealing bride s jewels Jayapal (32), a driver with a call taxi company, was arrested for allegedly stealing 30 sovereigns of jewellery from a newly married couple while they were returning home from a wedding hall on South Boag Road, T. Nagar on June 9. Police said that CCTV cameras installed in the hall helped them to nab the culprit. The families of the newly-wed couple, Goutham and Sangeetha, had booked two cars from the cab service to return home in Madipakkam after the wedding, police said. After reaching home they found that the bride s gold jewellery was missing. They immediately informed the Mambalam police. Police studied the footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the wedding hall. They spotted Jayapal in the footage and found his behaviour suspicious. He was found removing cash (later found to be Rs. 2500) from another car parked in the wedding hall. When investigating officials interrogated Jayapal, he confessed to having stolen the cash and jewellery. He was arrested and the gold and cash were recovered from his house. Corporation contractors are engaged in soil testing work on Madley Road and Railway Border Road in T. Nagar. The skywalks - elevated structures for the benefit of pedestrians to walk without getting cau- ght in traffic congestion - are similar to foot overbridges seen in railway stations. It was in 2012 that a suggestion was made for constructing skywalks at two places from Mambalam Railway Station to T. Nagar bus terminus and Parry s Corner to Fort Railway Station. Chennai Corporation Soil tests for skywalk begin gave its go-ahead for the projects and, recently, Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited called for tenders, inviting proposals for preparing the DPRs. Officials in TNUIFSL and Corporation engineers said that it would take several months before civil works begin at the selected sites. They will significantly reduce pedestrian and traffic congestion once they are constructed. TNU IFSL has called for tenders as it is facilitating the project along with the Chennai Corporation. The facility in T. Nagar will benefit traders and people visiting the shopping-cumbusiness district. The Enactus Team of Shasun Jain College is well trained to start organic farming, vermicomposting and The auto driver who serves cows 37-year-old Goshala Ganesh (resident of West Mambalam and autorickshaw driver) has been rendering service in the goshala in Sri Alarmel Manga Samedha Sri Prasana Venkatesa Perumal Temple, Mettupalayam Road, West Mambalam for several years. Hence the prefix Goshala. He collects vegetable waste and other fodder from vegetable markets, hotels and fruit vendors daily for the cows in the goshala. Ganesh said that he segregates the fodder in good condition and cleans it before feeding it to the cows. He also cleans the premises and bathes the cows. He said that he does not accept cash from donors but instead advises them to hand over any amount to Mattutheevanam shop which sends it to the goshala. He said that his first priority is to serve the cows daily. The cows bless him with a peaceful life, he added. Ganesh can be contacted in phone solid waste management projects. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Ismail is an Indian soil biologist and ecologist and Managing Director of Eco-science Research Foundation who has promoted and created awareness among students about organic farming, vermicomposting and solid waste management.
