3 Traffic problems aplenty near Duraiswamy subway The entrance to Duraiswamy Subway, Mambalam High Road, T. Nagar is riddled with traffic problems due erratic driving by bikers in its service lanes. As per norms, the service lanes are meant for vehicles coming from the road where a subway or a flyover is located. But the service lanes on both sides of the subway are used as 2-way streets for both entering and leaving the subway which is causing congestion at the entrance of the subway. This gets worse during peak hours and school opening and closing times. The subway, which was constructed in 1960, was widened from 2 meters to 5.6 meters last year and the floor height raised to prevent flooding during rains. Motorists living nearby also prefer to use the service lanes to go around it instead of using Mambalam High Road to enter the subway which adds to the problems. Motorists have appealed for posting of a constable at the entrance to the subway to regulate traffic and prevent motorists from using the service lanes to get access to the subway. Similar is the situation near Madley Road subway which has other problems like encroachment by vegetable vendors of the service lanes. 4 Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition Feb 5-11, 2017 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY Tamil Cinema and Music - 39 The song and sequence in Thyaga Bhoomi became famous, and led to the banning of the film by the British Indian Government of Madras Presidency after it had a successful run for many weeks! The scene was construed by the alien rulers as an anti British, Congress party propaganda tract! No gramophone disc or plate (as it was then known) of Desa Sevai was released along with the other songs of the film because the producers were afraid that it might be banned! Years later, the song rendered by Pattammal, was released as a private disc. No mention was made in it about the film Thyaga Bhoomi because the film was still under the unjustified ban order! The song, sequence and, of course the movie are green and bright in the memory-bank of many to this day dawned brightly for Indians with political freedom from the British being only a few months away. AV. Meiyappan released his film there were two dance sequences choreographed by the famous Bharathanatyam guru and nattuvanar Vazhuvoor B. Ramaiah Pillai and danced scintillatingly by Baby Kamala. The songs, Aaduvomey Pallu Paaduvomey and Vetri Ettu Dhikkum Etta Kottu Murase, written years earlier by the Rebel Poet of India, Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar, were sung off screen by D.K. Pattammal. The songs and the dances by Kamala made the film not only memorable but also created a cultural revolution in the attitudes of the middle class families towards Bharathanatyam. Every mother saw a Baby Kamala in her little daughter whether she had the talent or not! The rendering by Pattammal of the songs in her silky soft soothing style invested them with immortality. Even after fifty-plus years, the songs Aaduvomey is telecast by many TV channels to this day on August, 15, the Indian Independence Day. The music composer was R. Sudarsanam who had been associated with AVM for many years. Interestingly, D.K. Pattammal s name is announced in the film before the song, dance sequence begins. It was the first time such a thing was done in South Indian cinema-an honour best owed on Pattammal. In 1947, there was another film Mahatma Udhangar directed by G. Pattu Iyer, D.K. Pattammal sang two songs in this film: Kaana Aaval Kondu Aengum En Iru Vizhigal (Gagam Mohanam) and Kunchitha Paadham Ninainthu Urugum (ragam Kambodhi). The lyrics were by Papanasam Borthers, Sivan and Rajagopala Iyer, and music was by S.V. Venkataraman and T.R. Ramanathan, The film had Kothamangalam Seenu, V. Gopalakrishnan, T.R. Ramachandran, Vidwan Srinivasan, Anjali Devi, K.R. Chellam and Hamsa Damayanthi and others. The film sank without trace and is barely remembered today. Pattammal also sang for an entertaining comedy in 1948, Pizhaikkumm Vazhi, produced by the noted comedian T.S. Durairaj who also played the lead role in it. It was directed by A. Mitradas who used to direct Tamil and Sinhala films for T. R. Sundaram and his Salem-based Modern Theaters. Pattammal sang two songs written by Madurai G. Sundara Vaathiyaar and composed by G. Aswathamma. One of them is worth mentioning. It highlighted the Indian nation, her perennial rivers, culture, poets and all. A sampler. Tree trunk blocks pavement in West CIT Nagar The trunk of a huge tree with roots, which toppled over during the cyclone last December, is still lying on the pavement outside the apartment complex in 5, 3 rd Cross Street, West CIT Nagar. Corporation workers cut and removed the branches of the fallen tree after the cyclone, but left behind its trunk. The underground live EB cables, which were lifted out of the ground by the roots of the uprooted tree, are also lying exposed on the pavement posing a risk of electrocution to unwary passersby. More details can be had in phone Pedestrian plaza 2nd trial this month Chennai Corporation is planning to conduct a second trial run of the pedestrian plaza in T. Nagar in mid-february. The first trial was organized in November last year. A 700- metre stretch between Thanikachalam Road junction and Panagal Park will be made exclusive for pedestrians, and no private and public vehicles or hawking will be permitted from 9 a.m to 6 p.m. Traffic diversions, alternative parking areas and other arrangements will be similar to those made during the previous trial. Cables block pavement on Dr. Ramasamy Salai A large bunch of live EB cables and a light post have been lying on the pavement of Dr. Ramasamy Salai, near its junction with Dr. Alagirisamy Salai, K. K. Nagar for several months. They are blocking the way for pedestrians who also run the risk of electrocution in case of a damage to the insulation of the cables. According to nearby residents, the cables have been lying on the pavement ever since it was relaid several months ago. 5 After 4-year hiatus, TET on April 30 After a hiatus of four years, the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) will be conducted on April 30 in Tamil Nadu. School education minister K. Pandiarajan made the announcement on Feb. 2, following a Supreme Court ruling in November. The apex court had cleared the pending litigation on TET, allowing a 5% relaxation in the pass marks of reserved categories, upholding a state government order which would benefit minority category candidates for securing teaching jobs as well. The TET could not be conducted for four years owing to the pending cases which affected the opportunities for a significant number of existing and aspiring teachers in the state. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Appeal for traffic regulation at Kasi Viswanathar Koil junction Sir, Traffic needs to be regulated, especially during peak hours, at Kasi Viswanathar Koil junction, West Mambalam. Vehicles coming from Kuppiah Street along Madley Subway and going towards Ashok Nagar cross the junction and the entire stretch is congested during peak hours. To add to the problem, the road width is further reduced near the junction as the carriageway is blocked by roadside vendors and vehicles of devotees visiting the temple. It is a nightmare for pedestrians to cross the junction. They have to literally weave through the non-stop flow of vehicles. Senior citizens and students are the worst sufferers. During weekends and on festive occasions, the traffic issue is there throughout the day. I appeal to traffic police to post a constable, at least during peak hours, to regulate the traffic at the junction. 8 Page 8 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition Man held for torching autorickshaw Subramani of Ramapuram was arrested on Jan. 30 for setting fire to the parked autorickshaw of Nagaraj in West Mambalam on Jan. 29. On the night of Jan. 29, Nagaraj (43) had parked his autorickshaw outside his house in Umapathi Street, West Mambalam. He suddenly heard a lot of noise from outside and rushed out to see his auto going up in flames. He, along with his family members and neighbours, tried to douse the fire with water but the vehicle got badly damaged. He immediately filed a complaint with Ashok Nagar Police Station. A police team under Ashok Nagar Asst. Commissioner Hari Kumar, and led by inspector Ramesh, arrived at the spot. They saw a CCTV camera installed in the building opposite where the auto was parked. They checked the footage and saw a man set the auto on fire and flee from the spot. Though it was dark, his face was revealed in the headlight of a passing bike and he was immediately identified by Nagaraj as his friend s lover Subramani of Narasimha Perumal Koil Street, Ramapuram. Police arrested Subramani from his house. He told the police that he was angry with Nagaraj s increasing closeness to his lover and decided to destroy his autorickshaw, which was Nagaraj s only means of livelihood. Subramani was remanded to judicial custody and further investigations are on. CBSE changes dates for some board exam papers Addressing students concerns about the schedule of some papers in the wake of polls in five states, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has changed the examination dates of a few subjects for both Stds. 10 and 12. The dates of three papers of Std. 10, Tamil language (006), Gurung (132) and National Cadet Corps (076), have been changed. The Std. 10 Tamil language paper has been postponed by eight days, from March 10 to March 18, while that of Gurung language has been advanced from March 23 to March 10. NCC exam has also been delayed by eight days and it will be held on March 23 instead of March 15. For Std. 12, the date of Physical Education paper has been changed from April 10 to April 12, and of Sociology exam from April 12 to April 20.
