The workshop is being held to dispel the wrong notions about eye donation and spread awareness about its social importance and need. The participants will be informed about the intricacies of the transplantation procedure with a visit to the eye bank. Nithyasree s concert to commemorate Cancer Center s anniversary Vasantha Memorial Cancer Centre is celebrating its 6 th anniversary soon. Ramanathanwas Sudharshan which was released in The back-story of this production is interesting and worth narrating at some length. The popular folk myth of the potter saint Gora Kumbhar of Pandaripur has been filmed in many languages, and more than once in Tamil. This version titled Sudharshan was made by the well-known Madurai-based production unit of yesteryears, Rayal Talkie Distributors, in association with Jupiter Pictures. In those days, there was an unhealthy practice in the south Indian movie world of a story being filmed by more than one producer simultaneously in a competitive spirit. The story of the Panduranga devotee Gora Kumbhar in Maharashtra was similarly used by S. S. Vasan and Jupiter Pictures with both launching their productions almost simultaneously. Vasan with his drive and dynamism brought out Chakradhari (1948) much earlier, which reaped a rich harvest at the box office, while Sudharshan was in production for a long time and was released only in This film had major stars P. U. Chinnappa, Pasupuleti Kannamba, (Yogam) Mangalam, Lalitha, T. S. Balaiah, D. Balasubramaniam, P. B. Rangachari, and C. K. Saraswathi in major roles with the singing star of Tamil cinema of the early decades Chinnappa playing the potter saint. The excellent actress Kannamba played his first wife while Mangalam of Yogam-Mangalam Sisters, played the potter s second wife. Her casting has an interesting back-story! Not many are aware that the iconic Classical Carnatic musician M. L. Vasanthakumari was cast in this film as the second wife of the potter saint. For many reasons (which she refused to divulge even to her good friends like this writer!), MLV opted out after some reels were shot and Mangalam was brought on board to play that role. (MLV s only on-screen appearance was in Krishna Bhakthi (1948) in a royal court song sequence, where she sang the popular Entha Vedukonthu O Raghava in raga Saraswathi Manohari.) The film was written by noted writer-director A. S. A. Sami and Elangovan, the first star writer of Tamil Cinema, with Sami wielding the megaphone. However, differences arose and Sundar Rao Nadkarni who had made the box-office bonanza Haridas (1944) for Rayal Talkie took over replacing Sami. Nadkarni also took credit for the screenplay, which was actually written by Sami. The final product carried both their names as directors. Chinnappa, the singing star of the 1940s, played the lead role and sang many songs, some of them becoming popular. Lyrics were by Papanasam Sivan and K. D. Santhanam while G. Ramanathan tuned the music. Kannamba as the first wife was brilliant, proving to be a perfect foil for Chinnappa with whom she had acted in quite a few movies. Despite the cast, melodious music and the storyline drenched in bhakthi, the film did not fare well because of its delayed release and paled into insignificance compared to Chakradhari. Regretfully, Chinnappa passed away at a young age before the film was released. Viewed today after more than half a century, the film still sustains interest. Master A. L. Raghavan (later M. N. Rajam s handsome husband and noted playback singer) played Lord Panduranga and looked cherubic in that role. There were quite a few songs in the film mostly rendered by Chinnappa including Unnadiyil anbu vaithen Kanna Paramathma (Raga Maund), Damodara (Hindustani tune)and Enna seidaayo Appa (RagaSindhubhairavi),a hit Lalitha played a professional dancer who tries to seduce the potter. A song and dance number was filmed on her Unnai kandu mayangaatha. This song was a straight lift from the M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar s song in Ashok Kumar to which Kannamba dances. In spite of impressive performances by Chinnappa and Kannamba and melodious music by Ramanathan, the film did not do well because it came too late in the day after Chakradhari had swept the box office in However, for Ramanathan this film was a success for his melodious music score - one more feather in his cap! However, care is not being taken to ensure that the openings of the sewage manholes which are often found on the middle of the road are also raised to the new road levels. The manhole covers are often found a few inches below the road level. This not only poses a risk to 2-wheeler riders who can skid and fall while going over them, but also leads to the manhole covers getting damaged under the weight of the vehicles. I appeal to Chennai Corporation to advise its contractors to ensure that the manhole covers are also leveled to the surface while relaying roads. R.
