It is causing a lot of inconvenience to motorists. Adding to the woes, in a couple of spots, Metrowater workers have dug up the road to repair a pipeline and have later not covered the trench evenly. 4 Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES July 6-12, 2013 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 59 According to so-called Tamil film historians, Muthuswami Iyer directed Seetha Kalyanam, Ramnoth handled the camera and Sekhar was the Art Director. None of it is true! It was Baburao Phendarkar who was the Director of Seetha Kalyanam. V. Avadhoot, Shantaram s brother, was the Cinematographer, and the Art Director was one of the main architects of Prabhat, Syed Fattelal. Out of the Madras trio, only Ramnoth was involved as Assistant Director. His name appeared in the film credits and songbook as K. Ramanathan. ( We were mainly observers watching and trying to learn the craft of filmmaking. Shantaram and his partners were very much impressed by Ramnoth and his knowledge of cinema and they took him as the Assistant Director. Muthuswami Iyer coached actors and actresses in the delivery of dialogues. I watched and of course learnt a lot! It was our first experience with picture making. We were all overawed by being, eating, talking and working with the legends of Marathi and Hindi cinema of that period, Shantaram, the Phendarkar Brothers Baburao and Balji, A. V. Damle and Syed Fattelal. It was like a dream coming true!. A good friend and well-wisher of this writer, A. K. Sekhar, spoke at length to him about his life and career during early 1980s. A picture of humility, he was a softspoken gentleman of old world values. When this writer wrote a book on B.N. Reddi, the celebrated Telugu filmmaker (published by the National Film Archive of India NFAI Pune in 1985, he dedicated the book to K. Ramnoth - A. K. Sekhar. The twins had worked with BN during and contributed in more than large measure to the creation of the Telugu Film Classics, Vande Matharam (1939, Sumangali (1940), Devatha (1941), and Bhaktha Pothana (1942). Indeed BN had a line in his film credits, a Reddi-Ramnoth-Sekhar Production. Sekhar passed away some years ago. Ramnoth passed away young during 1950s when he was not yet fifty) The success of Seetha Kalyanam (1933) brought its handsome singing hero, S. Rajam, into limelight. That was the period when most Tamil movie heroes came from theater and were not as handsome and charismatic as Rajam! His aristocratic bearing, sharp features and slim figure made him a favorite of women of all ages! One of the interesting - and unexpected - reactions to Seetha Kalyanam deserves mention. In the movie, Jayalakshmi, who was the real life sister of Rajam, played the role of Seetha. Some prudish prurient sordid-minded folks objected to such pairing. According them it was incest! And a gross insult to the epitome of female decorum and chastity, Seetha, and to the epic Ramayanam! They took V. Sundaram Iyer, their father (he played the role ofjanaka) for permitting such immoral casting! Such were the attitudes and mores of the society at that time! Some of the songs that Rajam sang in Seetha Kalyanam became popular. Nal vidai thaarum (Raga Kalyani, based on the Saint Thyagaraja s kirthanam Amma Raavamaa ), Kaananam ethu swami (Raga Kaanada based on the Purandharadasa composition, Sevaka kana ruchirey). The music composer was the latter-day legendary and immortal icon of music, Papanasam Sivan and this was his debut in movies. Rajam s next movie was Radha Kalyanam (1935). The mythological tale of Lord Krishna and his older sweetheart Radha, it was produced by Meenakshi Movies and directed by C. K. Sathasivan better known as Saachi. A person of persuasive-plus charm and some clout in the fast-growing Tamil Cinema, C. K. Saachi hailed from a family of noted and successful lawyers of Coimbatore. He was drawn to the new medium of cinema and he sailed into it with glee and gusto. He gave up law, learnt the rudiments of filmmaking, and underwent limited training in London. A man of wide contacts in Madras in its social and cultural circles, he worked as Associate Director with the noted American Tamil filmmaker, Ellis R.Dungan. (To be continued) Roadside garden on Prakasam Street not maintained The nearly 80-meter-long roadside garden maintained by Chennai Corporation on Prakasam Street, near Metrowater office, T. Nagar, is an eyesore as it is in bad shape. A 40-meter stretch of the foundation enclosing the garden has collapsed and the grille work is missing. There is no greenery within the enclosure and even the Corporation signboard erected within it is bent and damaged. Barricade placed over open storm water drain A portion of the storm water drain at the junction of Krishna Street and North Usman Road (T. Nagar) is open as the slabs covering it are damaged. To avoid any untoward incidents from taking place, a barricade has been placed over it to warn pedestrians. Corporation Park on New Street ill-maintained The Chennai Corporation Park with children s play area on New Street, West Mam-balam, has not been maintained properly for the past several years. Cattle stray into the park and foul it as the main gate is missing. Most of the play structures are damaged, there is no greenery and garbage is dumped in its surroundings. Street blocked due to storm water drain work A portion of Jothi Ramalingam Street (West Mambalam) has been closed to motorists as the storm water drain constructed along Ellaiamman Koil Street cuts across this road. A 2-wheeler rider was seen crossing the closed section of the road through the narrow pedestrian path. Lorry loses wheel, hits parapet wall of flyover A portion of the end of the parapet wall of North Usman Road flyover collapsed when a private tanker lorry coming from Mahalingapuram hit it while exiting towards T. Nagar during the wee hours of July 2. According to a traffic official, the right front wheel of the truck came loose just as it was exiting the flyover causing the driver to lose control, and the truck veered to its right, hit the parapet wall and came to a standstill. No one was injured in the accident. The lorry was removed with the help of a crane and is presently parked on the roadside of 11 th Avenue, Ashok Nagar. A case registered is under investigation by Ashok Nagar Police Station. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Sewage water stagnation on Kannaiah Street Sir, Sewage water has been leaking from the main line and accumulating outside our residence on Kannaiah Street, T. Nagar, for the past couple of weeks. Our repeated request to Metrowater Department has gone unheeded. It is a potential health hazard and breeding ground for mosquitoes. I appeal for immediate action from the concerned authorities. M. Bala, Kannaiah Street, West Mambalam Trench on Madley 2 nd Street poses a danger Sir, A portion of Madley 2 nd Street (near R. K. M Sarada Vidyalaya, T. Nagar) close to its middle has caved in creating a wide opening near the mouth of the street s storm water drain. The drain which is choked by blocks is filled with rain water. A nearby resident has placed a wooden pole in the opening to warn road users. Chennai Corporation needs to take immediate action to repair the sunken portion of the road, clear the blocks in the drain and close the opening before any untoward incident takes place. When I was riding my new bike (purchased in May) on the oneway Rangarajapuram flyover at a.m, another two-wheeler rider (riding with his wife and two children) coming from the wrong side of the road lost control and hit my bike head on. I suffered minor injuries but my bike suffered heavy damages. I noted the registration number of the offending vehicle and lodged a complaint with R4 Police Station (Pondy Bazzar, T. Nagar). As per the present traffic rules, vehicles are prohibited to enter the flyover from North Usman Road side between 8 a.m and noon and from Mambalam side from noon to 8 a.m. However this rule is violated everyday, especially by 2-wheeler riders. Traffic police personnel also turn a blind eye towards the offenders. I request the traffic officials to strictly enforce the rule and fine the offenders. K. S. R.
