Thangaraj discovered 6-7 ft tall ganja plants growing in pots on the terrace of the house of Charles Edwin Jayaraj (40). Police seized the fresh plants and arrested him. Jayaraj told police that he had been growing the plants on his terrace for several months. During questioning, he said that he had been using the ganja leaves in his food as it has medicinal qualities. A police officer said, People sprinkle the leaves on boiling sambar to get high. This is a common practice in many houses in and around Theni and Usilampatti. Jayaraj was remanded to judicial custody. Preliminary inquiries revealed that he had been presenting fresh ganja leaves to some of his friends. During questioning, Jayaraj said that he was not aware that growing ganja is an offence, adding that he had never sold the leaves to anyone, said a police officer. The issue came to light after someone posted pictures of the plants on social media. Subsequently, city police commissioner A. K. Viswanathan instructed officials to search houses in several parts of the city. During one such search, police personnel in K. K. Nagar came across the plants. Jayaraj, an unemployed mechanical engineer, lives with his mother and sister in K. K. Nagar first sector. Canal along G. N. Chetty Road cleaned An excavator was used to clean and desilt the sewage canal passing along G. N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar on Jan. 22. The canal was full of garbage which was inhibiting the free flow of water and causing a foul smell. The nearby residents had been appealing for cleaning of the canal for several months and it was also reported in Mambalam Times. RMD Trust conducts medical camp for 500 villagers More than 500 villagers attended the free medical camp organized by RMD Pain and Palliative Care Trust (T. Nagar) in its hospital in Amarambedu village, near Sriperambudur last week. They underwent general health and dental check-up. Women were also checked for common gynaecological issues. The second phase will be administered on March 11. Children under 5 should be immunized irrespective of their previous immunization status. 5 Blue Moon, Big Moon, Blood Moon on Wednesday Moon watchers in Chennai are in for a rare treat on the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 31. That will be the evening of Blue Moon, which means the second full moon within a calendar month. Blue Moon is merely an idiomatic expression in English, and it does not mean that the Moon turns blue on that day. Once in a blue moon means rarely because it is not often that there occur two full moons in a single calendar month. Ironically, there will be a Blue Moon in the forthcoming March also, resulting in this supposedly rare event happening twice within 65 days. Another reason why Jan. 31 is special is that, in its elliptic orbit around the earth, the moon will be nearest to us on that day, and will therefore appear nearly 14% bigger than during a normal full moon. So, apart from being a Blue Moon, it will also be a Big Moon. Again, it is even rarer for a full lunar eclipse to occur on a Blue Moon night. Unlike in the case of a full solar eclipse when the sun gets totally dark, the fully eclipsed moon will still be visible from the earth but will assume a reddish colour because a part of the sunlight still reaches it via the earth s atmosphere. Thus, you can also see a Blood Moon on that evening. In Chennai, the moon will still be below the horizon when a partial eclipse starts, and will just be rising when the total eclipse starts at 6.21 pm. The full Red Moon will be visible till 7.37 pm, when the total eclipse ends and the moon starts emerging from the earth s shadow. The moon will be fully visible from 9.38 pm. Vedachalam alias Ananth of Saidapet on Jan. 21 for looting Rs.1 lakh worth valuables like silver kavacham, lamps and gold jewels from Vembuli Amman Temple (junction of New Boag Road and South Usman Road, T. Nagar) on Jan. 20. He was arrested by a police team led by Sekar (Inspector, Crime, R1 Mambalam Police Station) in his hideout in Kannagi Nagar and the jewels were recovered from him. Ramesh, the senior priest of the temple, had lodged a complaint with Mambalam Police. According to the police, they found a dirty and torn lungi discarded in the temple. The proprietor of a provision shop near the temple told the police that he had seen a beggar outside the temple wearing the lungi. Further investigation led the police to the doorsteps of Vedhachalm in Kannagi Nagar. Another beggar named Narayanaswamy wanted in the case is still at large. Both the beggars were also identified as the robbers from the CCTV footage obtained from a shop located opposite the temple. Vedachalam was remanded to judicial custody. It has been reported that the woman was conned over phone and inadvertently made to disclose her bank account details by an unknown caller who impersonated the officer of the bank, Only when the bank staff called her up to check whether the transaction was genuine did the woman realize the fraud. While this online fraud got reported in the media, probably due to the death of the victim, many such cases go unreported and many fall prey to such fraudulent calls. Such frauds continue to happen despite the frequent alerts from the banks to its customers not to disclose bank account/debit/credit card/password/otp and pin details. Last week I saw construction debris being dumped by a van on the road side. When I confronted the person supervising the operation, he was rude and gave irrelevant replies. I told him that debris should only be dumped in locations earmarked by Chennai Corporation. Apart from the debris that is being dumped regularly, 6 months back Metrowater dug a trench in the concrete street, and left without closing the trench properly. The debris has been dumped by the side of the trench. As the carriageway is blocked, the width of the road has got reduced leading to traffic problems at peak hours. The street is frequented by thousands of students as there are two schools close by. As the pavements are blocked, the students are forced to walk almost in the middle of the street risking their lives. Nagar Hike in bus fares will affect common man Sir, The Tamilandu Govt. states that it has not revised bus fares for several years and it is the need of the hour in view of the precarious financial condition of the several transport corporations, Any public utility cannot sustain itself and needs public funding for smooth running, but any increase in bus fares has to be effected bearing the common man in mind. Meanwhile, the salary of MLAs has been increased by 100%. Why this hurry and what is the necessity for the increase? Most of the MLAs, who belong to the political parties, are definitely not in dire straits to warrant such a high increase, especially when the State s fiscal deficit is very high. If the State can find resources to foot the hiked salaries of the MLAs, it should then explore similar avenues to fund the ailing transport corporations rather than put the burden on the public. V. More details can be had in Commuters haggle over sudden hike in bus fares The sudden midnight fare hike by 95 per cent led to most commuters haggling with conductors and drivers of MTC buses. The minimum fare in deluxe buses has been increased to Rs. 13 from Rs. 7, while express bus fare has been fixed at Rs. 9 (Rs. 5). The minimum fare in ordinary buses has been hiked to Rs. 5. Daily wage earners, especially construction workers who travel long distances daily, are the most affected. A commuter at T. Nagar bus terminus told this reporter that he works in a construction site in OMR and will have to shell out an additional Rs. 40 per day after the fare hike. He said that it puts an added burden of around Rs.1000 a month which is not affordable. With a fleet of 3,200 buses, MTC carries about 45 lakh passengers a day in Chennai city and parts of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. The buses are operated on 833 routes from 33 depots. While officials of MTC claim that more than 50 per cent of the fleet is operated on ordinary fares, it is learnt that less than 25 per cent of ordinary buses are operated in the city affecting nearly 75 per cent of commuters.

Free lung function test, consultation in PHC tomorrow Free spirometry test to evaluate the performance of the lungs will be conducted from 9 a.m to 12 noon on Sunday, Jan. 28 in Public Health Center (PHC) (Lake View Road, West Mambalam). Dr. S. Chandrasekar (Senior Pulmonologist) will conduct the test and provide free consultation. The test will be useful to check asthma, breathlessness, sneezing, exhaustion, chronic cough, chest compression and frequent tiredness. The reports will be provided immediately.
