1 ST BERNARD S PRIMARY SCHOOL Newsletter 30 May 2013 Dear Parents and Friends, Tuesday s Kindergarten Teddy Bears Picnic was a great event. We were joined by St Mary s Kinder classes for a fun filled day of activities and picnic morning tea. A big thank you to the teachers and parents from both schools who helped coordinate and support the activity. It was a fantastic community building event and one we hope to continue with for many years. Massive congratulations to all of our Year 6 rugby league players who participated in the annual gala day last Thursday. Our open boys team won every game handsomely and now go on to the regional finals in Cobargo early next term. Best of luck boys! A special thanks to the teachers and Don Spence for supporting the teams. Our thoughts, prayers and well wishes are extended to all of the children who are making their First Holy Communion this Saturday. It is a very special and beautiful occasion for all, especially the families and children, and indeed for the rest of the parish. Personally I think we have a really good looking uniform that sets us apart from other schools. It is neat looking and has a very St Bernard s look about it. One we should all be proud of. However, I have noticed that a significant number of students are wearing non uniform items. In particular the following; Sports shoes must be predominantly white and definitely have white laces. There are a number of students wearing brightly coloured fluoro shoes with complimenting laces. If your child has these please keep for weekends and after school activities. Hats must be the bucket type with St Bernard s name. Please discard the old legionnaire type. Socks (grey for boys, white for girls and sports) must be above the ankles. Surely you must agree that wearing black leather shoes with no socks visible is NOT a good look. Bracelets (ankle and wrist) are not allowed to be worn. As always I thank you for your cooperation and support in this matter. I am looking forward to next week s Bush Dance. I can t wait to dust off the old drizabone, jeans and flannies and get my old feet back on the dance floor!!!!! That All May Be One

2 ...continued from previous page Please be aware that Police are constantly patrolling local schools and there are severe penalties for those who break road rules. Top Car Park..Please do not park adjacent to the fence facing the pathway down to the school when picking up children in the afternoon. Some parents have been calling their children to the car. It is far too dangerous and your child s safety cannot be guaranteed if this behaviour continues. I have instructed staff not to let any students leave the collection area without a parent. Please keep Jacqueline Lee in your prayers as she slowly starts to recover from her back surgery. I believe she is recovering well but still has a way to go. Have a great week everyone. Blessings David PREMIER S READING CHALLENGE Time is moving on as the Premier s Reading Challenge finishes in August. All Primary students have been given their ID s. All Infants students complete the Challenge with their teachers. Any Infants parents who wish to add books that have been read by their children at home can contact Mrs Metcalf for their child s login details. Call Alicia on st.bernards-oosh@live.com.au ST BERNARD S SCHOOL BUSH DANCE Dig out your BOOTS and AKUBRA S and get ready to POLKA! St Bernard s School Bush Dance will be held on Thursday 6 June pm pm. The cost will be $15.00 a family. Bring a light supper and refreshments. Children are learning a number of dances in class so Save The Date and start practising! We would also like donations for a Hamper to be raffled on the night. Donations (eg food stuffs must be in date, bath items etc) can be dropped off to the Year 4B classroom. The class with the most hamper items donated will be awarded with playing a game of soccer rounders in Week 9 against the teachers who have been practising. The teachers think they can win so get those donations in!

3 Dear Parents and Carers This weekend the Church celebrates the feast of Corpus Christi. Corpus Christi is a festival that has been celebrated by many Christians, particularly the Catholic Church, in honour of the Eucharist since The name Corpus Christi is a Latin phrase that refers to the body of Christ. This event commemorates the Last Supper on the day before Jesus crucifixion. Corpus Christi has been traditionally the day on which First Communion is celebrated in parishes. We pray for the young people in our community who are making their First Communion on Saturday. Receiving the Christ in Eucharist draws us into a relationship with him- it calls us to give to be Eucharist to others. The following reflection is, for me a beautiful expression of what Eucharist is. I have misplaced the source and as there are many variations I am unable locate the author of this version. He was old and tired and much too dirty, picking up aluminum cans along the highway. I smiled, I said "hi," and gave him Eucharist. She lived alone, her husband dead, her family gone. She talked at me, not to me, endless words spewed out. I sat; I listened and hoped her Eucharist. She couldn't say she was sorry; she could only stand there, stubborn, stiff, and still angry. I reached out my hand, I forgave her, and we shared Eucharist. He was dying of AIDS, terrified, alone and in so much pain, all alone in the world, misunderstood, condemned; no one seemed to care. I held his hand, and prayed with him; he was Eucharist for me. Jesus took bread in his hands; he looked at it and said, "Change." He took the cup in his hands; he looked at the wine and said, "Change." And they became Eucharist, his blood and his body. Jesus takes us in his hands; he looks at us and says "Change." And we become Eucharist, his blood and his body. It was a silly fight. Who started it? What was it all about? We hugged, we reconciled, and we laughed Eucharist. I was tired, disgusted; I was all burned-out. I went to my friends; they opened their doors, and gave me Eucharist. Sometimes we cry Eucharist, sometimes we laugh Eucharist. Sometimes we shout Eucharist, we whisper Eucharist. In a touch or a tear, in a word or a song. We hope, we live because we are Eucharist. Jesus took bread in his hands; he looked at it and said, "Change." He took the cup in his hands; he looked at the wine and said, "Change." And they became Eucharist, his blood and his body. We would love our students to participate. This annual event is a wonderful opportunity for our budding authors in the Shire, aged between 5 16 years to showcase their talents. Entry forms are also available from local libraries or can be downloaded from the Eurobodalla Shire Council web site The competition is now open and entries close on the 26 July 2013.
