The Premiers Reading Challenge has only three more months to be completed. All children at St Ambrose School are enrolled in the Challenge; unless parents have requested otherwise on their Care Monkey form. 102 children from St Ambrose have already completed the Challenge and are set to get their certificates soon after the end of August; when the Challenge finishes. Please HELP US give warmth and understanding this winter! 3,079 books have been read by children at our school already which is a fantastic achievement. Please remember that all P/1/2 children are reading the books in class time. Parents do not need to do anything as their books will be recorded by the teachers on the website. Grade 3/4/5/6 all have their login details so they can record the books they have read. Please encourage your children to record their books on the Challenge website. Enjoy reading. Jenny Boldiston Literacy Leader. From now until the end of Term 2 the Social Justice Team (Mini Vinnies) will be partnering with the St Vincent de Paul Society to run a Winter Blanket Appeal. This year the St Vincent de Paul Society are in desperate need of warm, life-saving blankets for our homeless. This year we are asking our generous school community to donate warm blankets (and/or sleeping bags) for the homeless in our community. The blankets do not need to be new, as long as they are clean and in good condition.
Social Justice Team Prayer At last week s Social Justice Team/Mini Vinnie s Meeting Hannah picked out the prayer for us to reflect upon. If we are Jesus hands, eyes and feet in our world today. what can we do? What would Jesus have done? By: Luke, St Catherine s Primary School Berwick How does this prayer speak to me? Does it call me to action? How does it inform or change my thinking? Homeless Jesus by: Timothy Schmalz Jesus is huddled under a blanket with his face and hands obscured; only the crucifixion wounds on his uncovered feet give him away. Hannah focused on the words...brings us safely together... as the Manchester Bombing was fresh in her mind. She said this prayer reminded her of how these tragedies always show the good in people and that we all should make each other feel safe! Q: What do you think? St Ambrose Social Justice Team/Mini Vinnies for 2017 Ruby, Lily, Patrick, Lorelei, Maisy, Hannah, Cai, Thomas, Dana and Alyssa Let s make a difference this winter!

Recounts from our Excursion to Scienceworks Last Week!! On Tuesday the Grade 5 s from 5/6R and 5/6F created crystal names with borax, pipe cleaners, hot water, skewers and fishing line. Yesterday we went to Scienceworks. Our team was Sophie s Mummy s team. First we went to Nitty Gritty Super City. Our team had the best time. Then we went to the races and I had a race with Oscar. Then we went to have a snack and then we went to play! Tahli M (P/1E) Yesterday we went to Scienceworks. My favourite thing was the climbing wall. Then I went to the running race and had to press the yellow button. The pictures went darker when we pressed the button. First we got the borax and put some in hot water. Next we formed our names out of pipe cleaners. Then we tied on the names on to the skewers then we put them in some dyed hot water. We left them in the container for twelve hours and they started to crystallize. If you go into 5/6 R's room, you will see them hanging up on the roof. It was a fun experiment. Isabelle D (P/1E)
REFLECTION A God of Love One day two learned men were walking along the seashore, discussing the mystery of God. However, they weren t making very much progress. Suddenly they came upon a small boy playing on the beach. He had dug a hole in the sand and kept running down to the sea, dipping his toy bucket in the water, and running back up the beach to empty the water into the hole. The two men watched him for a while as he ran back and forth filling and emptying his bucket. They found the scene amusing. They went up to the boy and asked him what he was doing. Very seriously he told them he was emptying the ocean into the hole he had dug in the sand. This Weekend s Gospel Gospel The two smiled and walked on, resuming their discussion about God. After a while, one of them stopped and said to the other, You know, we were amused just now when that child told us what he was trying to do. Yet what we have been trying to do in our discussion about God is just the same. It is as impossible for us to understand the mystery of God as it is for that child to put the water of the ocean into that hole. Our minds are but tiny thimbles, whereas the reality of God is as great as the ocean. Jn 3:16-18 A reading from the holy Gospel according to John God sent his Son to save the world through him. Jesus said to Nicodemus, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved. No one who believes in him will be condemned; but whoever refuses to believe is condemned already, because he has refused to believe in the name of God s only Son. As the story says: it is impossible for us to understand God. God is a mystery. But a mystery is not something we can know nothing about. A mystery is something which is so full of meaning, that no matter how hard we try, we will never get to the bottom of it. Therefore, the story must not be used to justify laziness or superficiality in our efforts to understand something of the mystery of God. It s possible to know of the existence of God by our own reasoning. At the sight of something or
other, a person will know in an instant that these things do not exist through themselves, and that God is. God is a God of love. Our response can only be one of trust in God and love towards one another. What Paul said to the Corinthians is meant also for us: Help one another. Be united; live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. Once a young girl stood watching a gypsy as he drank from a well in the town square. After drinking, the man continued to gaze into the well, as though looking at someone. He was a giant of a man but had a friendly face. So the girl approached him and asked: Who lives down there? God does, answered the gypsy. Can I see God? Sure you can, said the gypsy. Then taking the girl into his arms he lifted her up so that she could see down into the well. All the girl could see, however, was her own reflection in the water. But that s only me, she cried in disappointment. All I see is me. Ah, replied the gypsy, now you know where God lives. God lives in you. By: 2014 GPBS Grade 1/2T Paraliturgy Prayers for our families! Our classes have been talking about Signs of God s Love this week.
