Happy Birthday Our happiest birthday wishes are extend to Peyton Camin who is celebrating her 8 th Birthday TODAY!!! We hope Cohen Doyle has a fantastic 7 th birthday on Saturday. Happy birthday wishes to you both! Dear Parents and community members, Thank you to everyone who was involved in our Catholic Schools Week celebrations last week. It consisted of three action-packed days of community engagement. Mrs. Gaston and her team of helpers did an outstanding job of the organization of this important event in our school calendar we are all very grateful for your efforts and the outstanding opportunities you provided for our parents and wider community members to be involved in experiences that are designed to celebrate who we are and what we are all about as a Catholic school. It was fantastic to see so many family and friends here at school and I know how much the children love seeing their special people here with us. We were lucky enough to have Mr. Anthony Morgan and CEO administration staff here on Tuesday, with Mrs. Susan Tighe, our Education Officer here with us on Wednesday for our whole school mass and shared picnic lunch. It makes me so proud when I see our parents and community members here with us and engaging in the great things that happen at St Joseph s. Thanks once again to everyone for making Catholic Schools Week 2016 such a positive experience. Thank you to the various photographers for the great photos that captured our celebrations beautifully! Ms. Merindah Wilson, the Diocesan Aboriginal Education Support Officer and I met on Thursday. Part of our conversation was around developing cultural awareness in our school community and we have some checklists to complete as part of our school review /compliance audit. Ms. Wilson was thrilled to present our school with two brand new flags for our beautiful new flagpoles. I presented the new flags to our school captains and Kaleb and Alicia at our assembly on Friday. We will now proudly fly a new Australian and a new Aboriginal flag on our flagpoles from Monday. As part of our cyclical review of school policies and procedures, the staff is currently reviewing our Behaviour Management policy. The Year 4/5/6 students did an excellent job of explaining our five baseline behaviours as part of their assembly on Friday. We are removing Pride in our uniform, pride in myself and replacing it with RESPECT, which stands for Respect Everyone Self People Environment Classmates Together. Well done to April, Sophie and Jackson who did an excellent job of explaining this behaviour and what it should look like at St Joseph s. There were lots of people there and we played 5 games of soccer. It was very hot. The best thing was that I kicked 7 goals. Thanks to Dad for taking me. I had a great time. Stuart Matarazzo

4 Blessing of the Oils Mass Father Pat announced at Mass yesterday Thank you to all who came to help celebrate Catholic Schools Week with us last week. Special thanks to the P&F for your beautiful cool drinks on those very hot days. This week we have two very important feast days, ST PATRICK S DAY on 17 th March and ST JOSEPH S DAY on 19 th March. The feast of St Joseph is on Saturday but we will be celebrating it at school on Monday 21 st March. We will have a liturgy followed by a BBQ lunch and a Book Fair. RECONCILIATION Students in Years 3/4/5/6 will be going to reconciliation on Wednesday, 16 th March. that he was going to Forbes today for the Chrism or Blessing of the Oils Mass. The Chrism Mass is traditionally held during Holy Week in every Catholic Diocese. During this Mass the priests, deacons and representativies of the entire diocesan community gather around their Bishop, who blesses the holy oils for use in the coming year. These are: *Oil of the Sick *Oil of Catechumens *Sacred Chrism Whenever the Holy Oils are used in a Diocese, the ministry of the Bishop, who concercrated them, is symbolically present. The Chrism Mass reminds us of our oneness Next Sunday is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week. On this day we commemorate Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Jesus had just spent 40 days praying and fasting in the desert and when He returned, riding on a donkey, He was greeted with people laying palm fronds in his path and shouting Hosanna to the son of David. Within a week he was arrested on Holy Thursday and the cries became Crucify Him, Crucify Him ending with his crucifixion on Good Friday. The Chrism Mass is also a key moment in which the unity of the Bishop with his priests is manifested and renewed. During the liturgy, the entire assembly is called to renew its Baptisimal promises; deacons and priests also renew their vow of obedience to their local Bishop and their commitment to serve God s people. At the end of the Chrism Mass, the holy oils are brought back to the parishes of the diocese for use in the coming year. Trish Gaston Religious Education Coordinator

5 News from the P&F Welcome to our new executive! We are delighted to announce that we have a new P&F executive for the 2016 school year. The positions are as follows: President: Bec Drenovski Vice President: Jess Griffiths Secretary: Marysia Cuddy Treasurer: Cassie Hillerman/Mandy Haley We are all very grateful to these mums for taking on the various leadership positions on the P&F. Money Free Easter Raffle As in previous years, we will once again be running a money free Easter raffle for all of the students at St Joseph s. We would ask all families to donate an Easter egg for the raffle. All children will be given a raffle ticket and will have their numbers drawn out. When a child s name is drawn out, they get to pick which of the donated eggs they would like. All eggs can be dropped off at the front office. Many thanks for your support in this area. The community of St John s in Trangie needs our prayers after a tragic plane crash resulted in the death of a father-in-law, grandfather and partner of members of staff at the school. Our prayers are with you all. Swimming for Sport There were a number of children who did not swim for sport last week. Those children who are unwell have a valid excuse. What is of some concern is the number of children who did not swim simply because they didn t want to. As was explained to the whole school on Friday, aquatics/water awareness is a strand in the NSW PDHPE syllabus document and is therefore compulsory. Please speak to your child s teacher or me if there is an issue regarding swimming that we need to know about. If your child is unwell or has some other reason for swimming, they are totally ok to miss out.

6 ST JOSEPH S DAY CELEBRATIONS 21 st MARCH 2016 SAINT PATRICK S DAY 17 th March St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain in the late fourth century and died in the second half of the fifth century. A free BBQ lunch and drinks will be provided to celebrate this very special day. Bring along your coins and we will count all the money donated to PROJECT COMPASSION. Remember that there is a small something for the class with the most. There are headphones available for sale at school for $16 a pair (cost price). If you require new headphones, please send in $16 and we will replace them. These are the ones that the CEO purchase for us. It s a girl! Special congratulations to Peyton and Lilly Camin on the safe arrival of a brand new baby sister! Izabella arrived yesterday, the day before Peyton s birthday and we are all thrilled for the Camin family. Congratulations once again!
