THE EUCHARIST: A FIRST SUPPER FRESH AND NEW In his book, Living Buddha, Living Christ, the Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, suggests that perhaps the Last Supper, our Eucharist, should be known instead as the First Supper because, following such a sacred meal, everything will be fresh and new. This seems to be a lovely way to express an old truth. Perhaps the phrase, receiving Communion, could likewise do with a bit of a touch up, as it can suggest that we who receive are simply passive, that we re not really doing anything and that Christ is the one who is doing; we are simply receiving. True, Christ is doing something but part of what He is doing is inviting us to respond in an active way. The Eucharist is called Holy Communion because we unite ourselves to Christ who makes us sharers in His Body and Blood to form a single body. Just as a marriage takes an active participation and communication from each person to achieve the desired union, so too, the reception of the Eucharist; we cannot leave it all up to Christ or it will have little meaning or effect in us. The Eucharist can be a difficult concept for adults to really understand and take part in fully. When speaking to our children about the Eucharist, we need to relate the Eucharist to their own experiences. Having a meal together is a good way to enjoy and share food. As adult Christians, we need to take care that our weekly Eucharist does not become a ritual, something we go through on automatic pilot; our bodies move obediently at the right places, our mouths speak the right words, but our minds are somewhere else. We need to be involved not only in receiving, but in giving; not just celebrating the Last Supper but in actively living the First Supper. 4 Hannah Stewart and Rohan Hill competed in the State Polding Athletics Carnival in Newcastle last Friday. They both participated in the opening march and were 2 of 93 Wilcannia-Forbes competitors, the highest number of athletes participating for many years. Rohan competed in the 9 years 100m sprint where he beat his Diocesan time by 2 seconds, what an achievement! Rohan crossed the line in 13th position overall, and 1st out of the Wilcannia Forbes boys, well done Ro! Hannah jumped a personal best of 1.25m in the High Jump which is a tremendous effort! The competition was tough and by the end there were 3 girls in the Bronze medal position. This led to a jump off and count back, placing Hannah in 4th position. Hannah also competed in the 11 years shot put throwing great distances. Congratulations Hannah on such a wonderful achievement!

5 Congratulations Max and Alice On Saturday the 2012 winners for Operation Art were announced at the Sydney Olympic Park Armory Gallery. Both Max and Alice were successful having their art works chosen to hang in The Children s Hospital Westmead. This is a fantastic achievement and a first for St Mary s.

6 2012 Spring School Holiday program in Hay s museums Liven up your holiday Wednesdays with some great fun at Hay s museums. Activities open to all school age children. All activities cost $10 per student. Bookings with payment to be made at Hay Shire Council Front counter. Places limited and allocated when payment is received. Children should bring water bottles and snacks for morning or afternoon tea. Wednesday 26 th September, 2 pm 4 pm Hay Gaol Museum Painting outdoors with Mrs Japp and friends These holidays see the return of a very popular activity at the Gaol Museum. Make sure you book and pay early to secure the sought after places in this fun art activity. Wednesday 3 rd October, 10 am to 12 noon Bishop s Lodge Historic House Cooking yummy treats This is another firm favourite with Hay s children. Make sure you book and pay early to secure your spot in the kitchen with the Bishop s Lodge volunteers, making yummy treats to eat. Parents and Friends News On Wednesday 5 th of September we catered for the Uardry Ram sale, I would like to thank Louise Hurst for organising the catering and also all the people who volunteered their time to help on the day. A special mention to Kellie Rutledge and Food Works for the donations we received for this event, I hear it was a great success. The fete is well underway however we are still looking for a stall co-ordinator from the year 5 group for the donuts, if you able to assist please ring me on Just a little reminder that the fete is our major fundraiser for the year and many hands make like work. 7 UNIFORM CHANGEOVER Uniform changeover will take place over the next two weeks, students can choose to wear either their full summer uniform or their full winter uniform. All students are to return to school next term in their summer uniform.
