2 Welcome to the assembly My name is and I wish you all a good evening/morning. In this time of increased nationalism, erecting barriers, and labeling others as threats or enemies, this feast calls us to a powerful counter-message. Our field of vision and inclusion must be much larger than that of the status-quo. It must have been shocking to learn that God s love extended not only to the Gentiles, but to the whole world. It may be equally shocking to realize that our boundaries are also too narrow. This feast is an epiphany about God s will for Christ s impact and ours on the world. Please stand together with us now as we greet one another and begin our Mass. (PAUSE) Thank you. The priest presiding at this Mass is Fr

3 PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL Priest: Led by the star, the wise men found and worshipped the Christ Child. With faith and confidence let us now ask God for what we need. Reader: May the light of Christ purify the Church and bring forgiveness to all. Reader: For all children born recently in our community and those soon to be baptised that the grace of the Christ Child will bring joy to their families. Reader: As we begin a new calendar year we pray for the victims of war and natural catastrophe as they face the prospect of rebuilding their lives. Reader: That those enjoying holidays and lengthy travel may do so safely and return refreshed to their communities and those they love. Reader: We pray for the sick in our parish community and those who care for them, that Christ's light may shine upon them. Reader: May the light of Christ shine eternally upon our recently departed: Tom Power, Antonio de Luca, Kieran Warden; and those whose anniversaries occur at this time: Lou Baker and Aiken Treston. Priest: God of light, you lead all people to your kingdom of hope and peace. Hear the prayers of your people and help us to see more clearly the mystery that is revealed in the coming of your Son, who is Lord for ever and ever. All: Amen.

4 Announcements: The Parish Office opens again from this Monday, 8 th January. Just an early reminder that this year, 2018, Ash Wednesday is a bit early, February 14; and Easter Sunday is April 1st. This year s Alpha will commence with an Introductory / Launch Party on the 8 th February 2018, Thursday evening instead of the 9 th Feb as was previously indicated. There will be two Alpha courses running in our parish centre this year, the 2nd course will start in Term 3. As part of our ongoing adult faith and discipleship formation, we strongly encourage and invite ALL parishioners to do at least one Alpha Course in your lifetime. 5 LITURGY OF THE WORD 7 JANAURY First Reading: Is 60:1-6 Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord.

O God, give your judgment to the king, to a king's son your justice, that he may judge your people in justice and your poor in right judgment. R. In his days justice shall flourish and peace till the moon fails. He shall rule from sea to sea, from the Great River to earth's bounds. R. The kings of Tarshish and the sea coasts shall pay him tribute. The kings of Sheba and Seba shall bring him gifts. Before him all kings shall fall prostrate, all nations shall serve him. R. For he shall save the poor when they cry and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. R. Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6 For surely you have already heard of the commission of God s grace that was given to me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow-heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Gospel Reading: Mt 2:1-12 When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel." Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage." After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.
