Christmass greetings to you and to your family and friends. This Mass marks the beginning of the Christmass season. Each dawn marks the beginning of a new day but Christmass marks the beginning of a new era for the human race. ENTRANCE Cantor: Welcome all wonders in one sight! Eternity shut in a span. Summer in winter, day in night, heaven in earth and God in man. Great little one whose loving birth brings earth to heaven, stoops heaven to earth. + In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Our help is in the Name of the Lord. Who has made Heaven and Earth. BLESSING OF THE CRIB The Angel of the Lord brought tidings to Mary: And she conceived by the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary full of grace; the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. A hallowed day has dawned upon us. Come and worship the Lord: for a great light has shined upon the earth. Let us pray that God our Father will bless this crib, and that all who worship his Son, born of the Virgin Mary, may come to share his life in glory. God our Father, on this day your Son Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary for us and for our salvation. Bless this crib, which we have prepared to celebrate that holy birth; may all who see it be strengthened in faith and receive the fullness of life he came to bring, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. Blessed be God forever. Entrance Hymn O Come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him born the King of Angels: R O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord! FINAL HYMN Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the newborn king, peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled. Joyful, all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies; with the angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem. R Hark! the herald angels sing, glory to the newborn King. Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin s womb! veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail the incarnate Deity! Pleased as Man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Immanuel. R Mild he lays his glory by, born that man no more may die, born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth. Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings. R SOLEMN BLESSING May the God of infinite goodness, who by the Incarnation of his Son has driven darkness from the world and by that glorious Birth has illumined this most holy night (day), drive far from you the darkness of vice and illumine your hearts with the light of virtue. Amen. May God, who willed that the great joy of his Son's saving Birth be announced to shepherds by the Angel, fill your minds with the gladness he gives and make you heralds of his Gospel. Amen. And may God, who by the Incarnation brought together the earthly and heavenly realm, fill you with the gift of his peace and favour and make you sharers with the Church in heaven. Amen. And may the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit, come down on you and remain with you for ever. Amen. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. In the name of Christ. Amen.
The celebrant breaks the host, saying We who are many are one body in Christ. For we all share in the one Bread. All then sing Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace. Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. Those receiving Holy Communion or a blessing are invited to come forward. HYMN AFTER COMMUNION Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky, and stay by my bedside till morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask you to stay Close by me for ever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, and fit us for heave, to live with thee there. CONCLUDING RITE The priest says the prayer after communion and we all respond: Amen. Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. Today God fills our hearts with joy as we recognize in Christ the revelation of his love. No eye can see his glory as our God, yet now he is seen as one like us. He who is born before all ages is born in time. He has come to lift all things to himself, to restore unity to creation, and to lead us into the heavenly kingdom. May the humility of the shepherd, the perseverance of the wise men, the joy of the angels, the prayers of Our Lady, S.Joseph and S.Stephen and the peace of the Christ Child be God s gift to you this Christmass. God of God, Light of Light, Lo! He abhors not the Virgin s womb; Very God, Begotten, not created: R See how the Shepherds, summoned to his cradle, Leaving their flocks, draw nigh with lowly fear; We too will thither bend our joyful footsteps: R Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger, Fain we embrace thee, with awe and love; Who would not love thee, loving us so dearly? R Sing, choirs of Angels, Sing in Exultation, Sing all ye citizens of heaven above; Glory to God In the highest: R Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning, Jesu, to thee be glory given; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing: R PENITENTIAL RITE God becomes human so that our sins may be forgiven. With confidence we ask God s mercy. Lord Jesus, you are mighty God and Prince of peace. Lord, have mercy: Lord, have mercy. You are the Son of God and the Son of Mary. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. You are the Word made flesh, the splendour of the Father. Lord, have mercy Lord, have mercy. + May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Glory Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. Glory For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Glory Amen. COLLECT The Collect is sung and we respond: Amen.
LITURGY OF THE WORD We joyfully celebrate the birth of our saviour Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, born into human history so that we might share eternal life with our Father in heaven. Midnight Mass First Reading Isaiah 9:1-7 The prophet Isaiah expresses Israel s hope of a Messiah, a royal son of God to save his people. Second Reading Titus 2:11-14 A passage alive with joy because of the astounding love and kindness and mercy God has shown us by saving us and making us heirs with Christ. GRADUAL HYMN Heaven is near, earth is bright, Angel songs are heard above As the Child of peace and love Sleeps in Mary s arms, Sleeps in Mary s arms. Skies are clear, stars are bright, Now the shepherds wend their way, Homage to this Child to pay: He is Christ the Lord, He is Christ the Lord. Christ is here, all is light, Shadows of the past are gone With the advent of the Son, Born to save us all, Born to save us all. THE HOLY GOSPEL S.Luke 2:1-14 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to S.Luke. + Glory to you, + Lord Jesus + Christ. Luke tells of the birth of Christ and the angels message to the shepherds. The Gospel concludes: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Pray my brothers and sisters that our sacrifice may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his holy Church. The celebrant says the prayer over the gifts and we respond: Amen. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. The celebrant continues with the Preface, after which all sing: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blesssed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. After the Words of Institution: The mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. The Eucharistic Prayer concludes and we sing: Amen: Yea, Lord we greet thee, 'throned upon thine altar, Jesu, to thee be glory given; Word of the Father, Sacrament Most Holy: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord. LORD S PRAYER At the Saviour s command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say; Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
THE OFFERTORY HYMN (During which our gifts of bread, wine and money are received) O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. O morning stars together, proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth! For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. How silently, how silently, the wondrous Gift is given; So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His Heaven. No ear may hear His coming, but in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him still, the dear Christ enters in. Where children pure and happy pray to the blessèd Child, Where misery cries out to Thee, Son of the mother mild; Where charity stands watching and faith holds wide the door, The dark night wakes, the glory breaks, and Christmas comes once more. O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel! Bp Phillips Brooks 1867 Day Mass In wonder and thankfulness we come to worship Jesus, the eternal Word of God, born for us on this holy day. First Reading Isaiah 52:7-10 The prophet Isaiah expresses Israel s hope of a Messiah, a royal son of God to save his people. Second Reading Hebrews 1:1-6 The letter to the Hebrews, addressed apparently to Jewish converts, reminds them that though God had intervened at various times and in various ways in their history, now through his Son he has intervened in an altogether new and decisive manner and destroyed the defilement of sin. GRADUAL HYMN Joy to the world! The Lord is come; let earth receive her king; let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing Joy to the world! The Saviour reigns; let men their songs employ; while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy. He rules the world with truth and grace and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love, and wonders of his love, and wonders, wonders of his love. THE HOLY GOSPEL S.John 1:1-18 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to S.John. + Glory to you, + Lord Jesus + Christ. While Matthew and Luke provide an historical introduction to their respective gospels, John, in his prologue, provides a theological reflection, which also summarises the major themes of his gospel. The Gospel concludes: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
HOMILY THE PROFESSION OF FAITH (NICENO - CONSTANTINOPOLITAN CREED) I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: (all bow or genuflect at the words in italics) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his Kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL In the stillness of God s presence let us offer our prayers of intercession. For the Church throughout the world: that we may allow ourselves to be transformed into shining lights bringing hope and peace to all. For all peoples on the earth: that they will know peace, good will, reconciliation and forgiveness. For all who find Christmas difficult: that God will touch their lives with love and help them find supportive friends. For those in our hospitals and care facilities, the housebound and homeless, and all who are ill: that the joy of Christmass may bring hope, healing and grace. For those who have died, especially those whose love and memory we treasure: that they may enter into the eternal light of God s glory. Now, in a moment of silence, we offer to you, Father, our own needs and thanksgivings as we commend ourselves and all people to the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, S.Joseph, S.Stephen our Patron and all the Saints. God our Father, you sent your Son Jesus to be born into the messiness of our world; look upon our needs and hear our prayers; may your word inspire us, may your light enlighten us and may your truth set us free. We ask this through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. THE GREETING OF PEACE We are the Body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We offer each other a sign of Christ s peace and friendship. The Altar Wine used over Christmass and New Year is given to God s glory and in loving memory of Jeff Dick. May the Lord grant him rest and peace. Thank you to everybody who has contributed to our Parish events over the last month and thank you to Owen Pearson for donating flowers from his garden to supplement the floral decorations in our Church.
