Bob will be away from the parish through January 23. Right to Life Events Thanks to all who signed up for the Springfield Right to Life Signature Ad the past two weekends. Your witness for life serves as a positive influence on others. We had 115 lines this year, our highest number ever, representing hundreds of parishioners. The ad will be published in the State Journal- Register on Monday, January 19, in observance of the anniversary of Roe v. Wade decision which legalized abortion on demand at any time. The annual Recommitment to Life Rally will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, January 18 in the State Capitol Rotunda. Andy Moore, Director of Online Communications for American United for Life will be speaking. The Rally will last one hour. No reservations are needed. This is another opportunity to learn about the life issues and to show your support for life. Springfield Right to Life will also be sponsoring a Prayer Vigil outside the Planned Parenthood site on the actual anniversary date, Thursday, January 22, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call Springfield Right to Life at for more information. A LETTER FROM THE BISHOP Latin America Collection Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The family around the world today faces tremendous challenges. In Latin America, where Christian values remain important, many families are wounded by hostility from the surrounding environment and by broken relationships within the family. Yes throughout the hemisphere, the Church continues to point the way to Christ as the source of hope and healing within the family and in society. Many family and catechetical ministry projects funded by the Collection for the Church in Latin America offer families and communities a way to strengthen, affirm and celebrate their life together in faith, offering a different and hopeful vision of relationships with one another and with God. In Cuba, migration and economic pressures are only a few of the many internal and external circumstances that pose threats to Catholic families, as they strive to practice and share their faith. A grant requested by the Archdiocese of Havana is addressing these challenges by forming a family pastoral ministers who are helping nourish families, so they can live an authentic, integrated experience of faith at home and in the wider community. Through this project, the archdiocese placed an increased focus on family ministry, supporting ninety-eight communities with existing programs. Monthly, one-day meetings are held with communities, which include workshops, interactive exercises and best practices for family ministry. The project also promotes the Rosary and prepared people for both the National Day of Families held in June of In addition to the monthly meetings, a separate retreat was held for the facilitators of the groups that work with young couples. Our diocese will take up this collection the weekend of January 24-25, Please be generous in this collection and take this opportunity to share your faith with families in Latin America and the Caribbean. 3 2nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3 January 18, 2015 In one week, St. Agnes School begins our annual celebration of National Catholic Schools Week. During this week, we honor the role of Catholic education in our parish, our community and our nation and the many people who make our schools possible. The theme for National Catholic Schools Week, 2015 is: Catholic Schools : Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. The theme is the same as last year and will continue through This theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of Catholic education. Schools are not only communities themselves; they are also part of larger communities of home, Church, city and nation. Faith, knowledge and service are integral components of a Catholic education and the measures by which any Catholic school can and should be judged. Please see the insert in today s bulletin for the specific activities. We hope that School and Parish families and friends will be able to join us for many of the activities. The week begins with an Open House after all of the Masses on Sunday, January 25 th. Monday, January 19 NO Classes, Martin Luther King Day Tuesday, January 20 Preschool Conferences. That Man Is You is Back! All men of the parish are invited to attend That Man Is You! sessions in the St. Agnes Parish Hall every Tuesday morning. This exciting, faith-enriching program focuses on a husband s relationship with his wife. The program identifies (1) the indispensable role of the family in salvation history from Calvary to today; (2) the seeds that God has planted for the renewal of the Church, the family and greater society; and (3) The Seven Steps to a Healthy, Happy, Holy Family. The weekly sessions are held from 6 7:15 a.m. every Tuesday morning in the parish hall. A hot breakfast, coffee and juice will be available. BAPTISM CLASS The Baptism Class is required for all parents who have not taken a class before, although all parents are urged to attend. The next class will be on February 19, 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Gathering Space of the Church. Parents may take the class prior to the birth of their child. Please call the Church Office to register. PLEASE PRAY FOR We ask you to remember in special prayers the women and men of our military services who are in places of conflict around the world. Pray for peace, and pray for the safe return of all of our armed services personnel and other workers, including St. Agnes parishioners and family members who are overseas: Aysha Jean Meyers, Matthew Reichardt, and Lloyd Thomas Hayes Jr. If you have a relative or friend in the military serving overseas, please let us know at the Church office, Also, if you know that any of the above persons have returned home safely, please let us know. Special Teachers Collection: As part of the celebration of Catholic Schools Week, which begins next weekend, January 24-25, there will be a special second collection after Holy Communion at all Masses that weekend in support of our St. Agnes school teachers. This is a custom started here a few years ago as a sign of gratitude and appreciation for our teachers for their time, interest and sacrifices made and given for our children. You may use the envelope in this week s bulletin for that collection. Thanks so much for your support! Christ the King Parish is offering Oremus: Let Us Pray, an 8-week study from Ascension Press. 5 3rd 2nd SUNDAY OF IN ORDINARY LENT TIME 55 January March 18, 27, Young at Heart (YAH) Activities Mystery Dinner Theater Mayhem at the Talent Show: Tickets will be sold after all Masses this weekend for our second Mystery Dinner Theater on Saturday, January 24 or our Mystery Matinee Theater on Sunday, January 25 in our Parish Hall. Our talented St. Agnes cast members will provide a hilarious presentation of a talent show that goes terribly array. Tickets are $30.00 for the 6:00 p.m. Saturday show/ dinner (Social starting at 5:30 p.m.) and $20.00 for the 2:00 p.m. Sunday matinee/ appetizers. We will have prizes for those who predict the guilty party. All profits will go to purchase special equipment for our St. Agnes choir. The deadline for reservations is Sunday, January 18 so we know how much food to prepare. Last year, our single performance sold out at 120 people so please call soon if you are interested to ensure you have a ticket. Call Sue Hartl ( ) to purchase tickets.
