2 1st SUNDAY OF ADVENT 2 December 1, 2013 FIRST FRIDAY DECEMBER First Friday this month will be on Dec. 6. Masses will be celebrated at 8:15 a.m. and at 12:10 p.m. There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament following the 8:15 Mass, with reposition at noon prior to 12:10 Mass. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the patronal feast of our nation and diocese, falls on Sunday, Dec. 8; therefore, this holyday is transferred this year to Monday, Dec. 9. Due to the transfer, it does not carry the obligation to participate in Mass. Mass, nonetheless, will be celebrated at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 9. Annual Novena to the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION will be held November 30 through December 8, at Christ the King Church. The theme this year is Mary, Our Mother, In This Year of Faith. Each evening begins at 7:00 p.m. with Exposition and Adoration, followed by the Rosary. A priest from the area will give a talk each evening, and the evening will conclude with songs and Benediction. On Saturday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 7, there will be Mass at 4:30 p.m., with the Novena at 7:00 p.m. All are invited to participate in any or all of the nine evenings of prayer and adoration. Franciscan Nativity Festival: Chiara Center (on the grounds of the Motherhouse of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis/Springfield) invites everyone to the 7th Franciscan Nativity Festival Friday, December 6, 2 p.m. - 7 p.m. Saturday, December 7, noon - 4 p.m., Sunday, December 8, noon - 4 p.m. Free and open to the public, the Festival features over 100 international Nativity Sets and a tour of St. Francis of Assisi Church. Special Collections: This weekend we take up a special collection for our parish St. Vincent de Paul Society in its service of those in need in our area. Please note that we will have another second collection after Communion at all Masses the weekend of December 14/15 for the St. Martin de Porres Center here in Springfield for its ministry of outreach to those in need. Next Sunday, December 8, at 2:00 p.m. at our Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Bishop Paprocki will host a special awards assembly honoring the service of so many to our parishes and to our diocese. The diocesan Magnificat Award created in 2003 in honor of our diocese s 150th anniversary of founding will be given to well over 100 persons from across our diocese. Our congratulations to parishioners of St. Agnes who will be awarded this honor: James Forstall (diocesan Black Catholic Advisory Board), Barbara Kern (for her decades of dedicated service to our parish), and Joan Reed (Administrative Assistant for the Vicar General, Office for Ministry Formation and the Permanent Diaconate/Catholic Pastoral Center). PLEASE PRAY FOR We ask you to remember in special prayers the women and men of our military services who are in places of conflict around the world. 5 3rd 1st SUNDAY OF ADVENT LENT 5 5 December March 1, , 2011 A Letter From the Bishop (Retirement Fund for Religious) Dear Friends in Christ, Soon our parishes will be conducting the appeal for the Retirement Fund for Religious, an annual collection that benefits some 34,000 senior sisters, brothers and religious order priests. As I reflect on the service of our women and men religious, I recall the words of Jesus in John s Gospel: Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be (Jn 12:26). Through their prayer and ministries, religious can be found wherever Jesus is found not just in Catholic parishes, schools and hospitals, but also in service to the poor, the lonely and the oppressed. In a profound way we also find Jesus in the ongoing witness of our elder religious. While many continue in active and volunteer ministry, others are frail and need assistance. Yet they remain wholly committed to their vocations, accepting the limitations of aging and embracing the opportunity to focus more fully on praying for our Church and world. Most elder religious worked for years for small stipends, leaving a substantial gap in retirement savings. With the ever-rising cost of health care and the increase in the number of those needing care, many religious communities now struggle to provide for their senior members. The Retirement Fund for Religious offers vital financial assistance to help meet day-to-day needs for prescription medications, nursing care and more. The annual collection is an opportunity for each of us to be the presence of Jesus to our senior religious. I ask simply that you give what you can. Please join me in supporting the Retirement Fund for Religious and in praying for God s continued blessing on our nation s elderly sisters, brothers and religious order priests. Christ the King potluck: Terry Lucas, President of the Christ the King Over 50 Club, has graciously invited us to participate in their first Friday of the month potlucks. Several of us have attended in the past and really enjoyed ourselves. They have good food, good speakers and friendly members. Like us, they request that folks bring $4.00 per person and a dish to share. Their next potluck is Friday, January 3, 2014 in their Parish Hall.
