1 ST. LOUIS CHURCH 30th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 24, 2010 Daily Mass Readings Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Next Sunday Sirach 35:12-14, Ephesians 4:32-5:8 Ephesians 5:21-33 Ephesians 6:1-9 Ephesians 2: Philemon 1:1-11 Philemon 1:18-26 Wisdom 11:22-12:2 Psalm 34:2-3, 17-19, 23 Psalm 1:1-4, 6 Psalm 128:1-5 Psalm 145:10-14 Psalm 19:2-5 Psalm 111:1-6 Psalm 42:2-3, 5 Psalm 145:1-2, 8-11, Timothy 4:6-8, Thessalonians 1:11-2:2 Luke 18:9-14 Luke 13:10-17 Luke 13:18-21 Luke 13:22-30 Luke 6:12-16 Luke 14:1-6 Luke 14:1, 7-11 Luke 19:1-10 What is Lectio Divina? While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, October 31, 2010 Listen! Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. It s easy to forget sometimes that Jesus was like us in ALL things, except sin. He made plans. He had a schedule. There were places to go, things to do, and people to see. He didn t plan on lingering in Jericho. Unlike us, though, Jesus was always ready to let go of what he wanted to do to be free to reach out in love. Who will upset your plans this week? Pray for the grace to let go. On this weekend where we focus on our brothers and sisters in Haiti, we wanted to acknowledge some impressive service that our students performed over the summer. Some of our fifth grade girls put together a home-made carnival for their neighborhood, with the intention of donating the profits to charity. Mary Kate and Caslin Sisk, enlisted the help of Annabelle and Maddie Salkeld, and Lauren Johnson, a friend, neighbor and 2nd grader at Fulton Elementary. They worked in their basements to create invitations as well as tickets to sell, gathering small toys from around the house to award as prizes. They prepared old-fashioned games, face painting, guess the number of candies in the jar, and even a cake walk. When all was said and done, the girls raised $65 and decided to give the money to our Haiti Committee! Congratulations girls, for your hard work and for being such an inspiration! We are very proud of you! Monday night the Howard County Council presented our principal, faculty, and staff of St. Louis School with an Honorary Resolution for being designated as a Blue Ribbon School and we are so grateful to be acknowledged in this public way by our county officials. This presentation is just a warm up for the November ceremony in Washington, DC where we will receive our national designation. Stay tuned more celebrating to come! A special visitor addressed our 6-8 th grade students this week. Tichaona Mudobhi, a 20-year-old young man from Zimbabwe, spoke to our students about his experiences growing up HIV positive and the impact that THE CHILDREN LIVING WITH HIV AND AIDS PROGRAM, funded by Catholic Relief Services, has had on his life. Thank you to Tich for sharing his story in such a personal and touching way and to parishioner Meg Barrett for arranging this special visit and helping us share with St. Louis students the understanding of the church s work with the most vulnerable children just like them, but a world away. Calling All Vendors for St. Nick Night! Do you have a business that you would like to promote at St. Nick Night, our annual Christmas family fun event? We are counting down the days and hope to see you all there!
5 YOUTH MINISTRY Another adventure in exercise happened at the gym (where I still go at least 3-4 times a week!). This one, though, was not my personal battle with a weight machine or treadmill or any of the other tools of death I use there. This one was an adventure in spiritual exercising After huffing and puffing through 7 miles on an exercise bike, I wandered (okay, hobbled) over to the counter to get a towel. There, I met Matthew, a young man with special needs who occasionally cleans the gym. On this particular day, Matthew and I had a conversation about a number of things: why he likes the gym, what his doctor told him about some physical problems he has, and what he is doing with his life. As I listened, I thought how fitting it is that his name means Gift from God. You see, we all can get so caught up in ourselves that we miss these opportunities to see gifts from God. Matthew showed me the importance of slowing down and looking around, this time at the face of Jesus in a young man who probably gets ignored a lot. I need to keep an awareness going for the many times God places gifts like Matthew in my life, gifts that tend to go unnoticed when I am tired or busy or frazzled. How about you? I LL BE PRAYING FOR YOU. MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL CATHOLIC YOUTH MINISTRY: October 27: MS CYM Youth Council, 6-7pm Parent Meeting (Youth Room), 7:15pm November 2: Confirmation What s Next? SECOND/SPECIAL COLLECTIONS October 30/31 Building Fund STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE Both the first reading and today s psalm say clearly that the Lord hears the cry of the poor. Have you been given the gifts of time, money or abilities to be the means by which God answers their needs? PLANNED GIVING As parishioners of Saint Louis Church, old or new, we are all beneficiaries of more than 150 years of service and parishioner generosity. A planned gift to Saint Louis Church, will sustain this good work for generations to come. For more information on making a planned gift to Saint Louis Church, contact Mary Helfrich, Parish Development Director at MHelfrich@stlouisparish.org or Preserving our Treasured Legacy Campaign: Please consider making a sacrificial pledge to this campaign that will enable us to bring down the mortgage of our new Church and Pastoral Center. 1. If you gave to the Heritage of Hope Campaign, which ended in 2001, consider making a pledge to the Legacy Campaign. Or 2. If you are nearing the end of your payment to the Legacy Campaign, consider extended your pledge for another year or two. Or 3. If you are new to the parish or were unable to make a pledge in the past, consider doing your part now by making a pledge now. Everyone is invited and encouraged to support and participate in this important time in the life of our parish. For additional information contact the parish office at Thanks sincerely to all who have been supportive.
6 OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH The 5th annual Baby Bottle fund raiser for the Howard County Pregnancy Center is in progress. Your donation will help a family to keep a new baby from becoming a crisis. Fill it up with change or, even better, a check! Bring your bottle back so we can put your gift to work. October 29: 7:30pm at the CHAPEL Scriptural Rosary: Pray the Rosary with a pro-life reflection at each Hail Mary. A very moving experience. Please join us. Pamphlet Topic of the Week: Caring for Each Other, Even Unto Death. The questions of end-of-life care, Advance Directives, and Living Wills have become more complex as medical technology offers more options. Do we ever lose our human dignity? No. For guidance on these difficult questions, pick up your copy at the Information Table. EVANGELIZATION: GO! Make disciples of all nations! This is Jesus commission to all of us. Not just those sent off to foreign lands, not just the ordained and the consecrated religious. Baptism incorporates each of us into the same mission that Jesus had to proclaim that the Reign of God has broken into human history. Jesus in his life, death and resurrection freed us from the chains of sin and death. He enabled us to become what God created us to be, his beloved sons and daughters, formed in his image. We are all called to evangelize the Church exists to spread the Good News that God loves us. Once you let that message transform your own life, you cannot keep it a secret. The Archdiocese of Baltimore has restructured its offices to emphasize that Evangelization is a mission priority. We ll unfold this over time, but for now, pay attention to all the opportunities you have each day to let the love of God work in and through you to enrich everyone you encounter. ST VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY: If you have a clothing donation, you may drop your items into the blue St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Bin located in the rear of the parking lot by the Maintenance Barn. If you need to obtain a receipt for your clothing donations, you need to call St. Vincent de Paul directly at Clothing items should be placed in sturdy plastic bags and tied securely and then placed in the bin, making sure that the bags are pushed up and over the inside ledge. 15 gallon trash bags fit well in the clothing bin drop slot. This is a wonderful opportunity for used clothing in good condition to be distributed to the poor. It would be regrettable should there be the need to remove the bin from the St. Louis Campus. Thank you for you understanding and cooperation. WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP SEW BAPTISMAL BIBS? St. Louis has a team of wonderful volunteers who share their time and talent sewing Baptismal Bibs for the babies and children who are baptized. The bibs represent the white garment put on when they become a new creation in Christ. It is an outward sign of our Christian dignity. If you would like to help sew bibs call Julie Farmer at or farmertakesawife@aol.com. Directions and materials are provided. SHRINE OF ST.
