While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, January 31, 2010 How quickly the crowd turns on Jesus! They are amazed at his gracious words announcing that he is the fulfillment of God s promise through the ages. Amazed until they realize that they cannot expect preferential treatment just because he grew up in their midst. Then they want to throw him off a cliff. Has anything ever happened to you to challenge your idea of God? YOUTH MINISTRY A few winters ago, I was hiking in the snow at Patapsco Park (McKeldin Ellicott City), trugging along, weighted down less by the snow than by some trials I was experiencing in my life. Suddenly, I slipped and found myself on one knee, a reminder, I think, to stop complaining and start praying! Recently, I was once again hiking in the snow, this time with a friend and noticed that the friend had not once slipped but was very sure-footed. Picturing myself the avid and expert hiker, I wondered aloud why he was not sliding at all. He replied, Pat, you just have to know where to place your feet! Hmmmmm Know when to kneel and where to place your feet. This seems like a recipe for a disciple of Jesus, doesn t it? Although it is the ideal that we pray before we take a fall, it is also important to remember to pray at all times, whether we are frustrated or upset or happy. And, knowing where to place feet and what obstacles to stay away from, is important as well. Just a few thoughts I LL BE PRAYING FOR YOU!!! Next Sunday, January 31 st, we kick-off Catholic Schools Week with an Open House for prospective families from 10:30 a.m. through 2 p.m. We are currently accepting applications for incoming students for the school year and encourage you to come by to see how our 86 year tradition of Catholic education and faith formation can benefit your family. Our teachers, administrators and students will be available to answer your questions and will be happy to show you around! We hope you will join us! Thank you for contributing to the second collection this weekend which benefits Catholic education at our own parish. It is through your generosity that we are able to continue our ministry of faith formation and academic excellence and we are very grateful for your kind support. 6 CATHOLIC ADVOCACY LOBBY NIGHT: Please consider making a commitment to join other Catholics from all over Maryland on President s Day February 15 to offer a Testimony of Charity at the 26 th Annual Catholic Lobby Night in Annapolis. Lobby Night is an advocacy event that gives Catholic voters the opportunity to speak with their State elected officials about Social Justice issues, like support for women in challenging pregnancies, tax help for nonpublic schools, clarifying what marriage means. Full range of topic will be available as time draws nearer. DO NOT BE AFRAID! Your presence alone is invaluable: you can just BE THERE while someone else does the talking! Lobby Night lasts from 3pm to 8pm; we provide buses from St Louis. WATCH this space for information on registering we need to know how many buses we need and the Maryland Catholic Conference needs to know who is coming so they schedule appointments with the legislators. HEALTH CARE REFORM ALERT: As long-time advocates of health care reform, the U.S. Catholic Bishops continue to make the moral case that genuine health care reform must protect the life, dignity, consciences and health of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. Health care reform should not advance a pro-abortion agenda in our country. On November 7, the U.S. House of Representatives passed major health care reform that reaffirms the essential, longstanding and widely supported policy against using federal funds for elective abortions and includes positive measures on affordability and immigrants. On December 24, the U.S. Senate rejected this policy and passed health care reform that requires federal funds to help subsidize and promote health plans that cover elective abortions. All purchasers of such plans will be required to pay for other people s abortions through a separate payment solely to pay for abortion. Outside the abortion context, neither bill has adequate conscience protection for health care providers, plans or employers. These two bills must now be combined into one bill that both the House and Senate will vote on in final form. Provisions against abortion funding and in favor of conscience protection, affordability, and immigrants access to health care must be part of a fair and just health care reform bill, or the final bill must be opposed.
