1 ST. LOUIS CHURCH EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 27, 2011 Daily Mass Readings Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Next Sunday Isaiah 49:14-15 Sir 17:20-24 Sir 35:1-12 Sir 36:1, 4-5, Sir 42:15-25 Sir 44:1, 9-13 Sir 51:12-20 Dt 11:18, 26-28, 32 Psalm 62:2-3, 6-9 Psalm 32:1-2, 5-7 Psalm 50:5-8, 14, 23 Psalm 79:8-9, 11, 13 Psalm 32:2-9 Psalm 149:1-6, 9 Psalm 19:8-11 Psalm 31:2-4, 17, 25 1 Corinthians 4: 1-5 Rom 3:21-25, 28 Matthew 6:24-34 Mark 10:17-27 Mark 10:28-31 Mark 10:32-45 Mark 10:46-52 Mark 11:11-26 Mark 11:27-33 Matthew 7:21-27 What is Lectio Divina? While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, February 27, 2011 How much time do you waste worrying about things over which you have no control? We all do it the weather, the stock market, what other people say, do, or think. Jesus is encouraging us to live as though we really believed that God our Father cares about us personally. Because he does! Seek first the kingdom of God. Look for signs of God s presence in your life, and in the lives of others, be a witness to his loving kindness and everything will fall into place. Remember: It s all about Jesus! 2 Dear Parishioners: Below is a letter I recently received from FISH of Howard County an organization that does a great job in helping those in need here in our own county: Dear Monsignor Luca and St. Louis Friends: FISH of Howard County wishes to extend to you our sincerest appreciation for the support that St Louis Church has extended to our organization throughout the year of The generous Advent Poor Box collection designated for our benefit the portion of the monthly St. Louis food collection the foods collected by the Religious Education families, the St Louis School groups and the Divine Mercy Committee the support from the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Louis the Knights of Columbus, St. Louis the King Council and the continued support from various other St Louis Church Youth Groups and numerous individuals have been instrumental in making it possible for FISH to meet a considerable increase in demand for all of our resources during this past year. The enthusiastic support shown to FISH throughout the year by people of all ages and of all walks of life in the St Louis Community is most encouraging. The number of our requests for food and financial assistance (utility, rental and prescription assistance) is a direct reflection of the downturn in the national economy. With the generous support from St Louis Church and others, we have been able to respond to legitimate needs in a timely manner. FISH provided over $53, for emergency financial support (housing utilities etc.) and delivered to needy persons sufficient food to provide over 29,000 meals. In addition, the FISH Pharmacy Assistance Program was able to provide almost $36, in prescriptions and medial related expenses. To each and every one of our St. Louis supporters: You have made a difference in the lives of many Howard County residents this past year. In addition to all of the above, FISH has also been blessed with the volunteer services provided by numerous St Louis parishioners. Just as additional demands have added to the challenge, so too has the increase in our volunteer team risen to the occasion and for that we are indeed grateful. MAY GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT. Sincerely, Carroll and Frank Kitzmiller FISH of Howard County Msgr. Luca P.S. The Souper Bowl collection was also outstanding. Thank you! Thank you! And my deepest thanks as well to all who remember the poor each week in the Poor Box and are thus enabling St Louis to make a difference in our world! THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on shoes. Mark Twain GOOD DEEDS OF THE CHILDREN: David read a book to his sister; Jack shared his Valentine treat with his brother; Marin helped pick up the cranberrys when his brother dropped them; Claire opened a door for a lady at the doctor s office; Terra gave $1.00 the church; Samantha read to her brother; Kevin helped his school friends; Mandi took her brother downstairs so her parents could sleep longer. THE ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL GIVE YOURSELF TO GOD (MATTHEW 6:24) The Archbishop s Annual Appeal is now underway. Many of our parishioners have received a mailing from Archbishop O Brien. He has asked that you make a pledge to the 2011 Archbishop s Annual Appeal. The Appeal not only funds the operations of the Archdiocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is, Give Yourself to God. Jesus taught us that if we give ourselves to God, He fills us up again. He also taught that God will never forget us. All that we have and all that we are is given to us by God. In thanksgiving for all that God gives to us, please give generously to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal. Your gift will enable archdiocesan support of ministry, education, and services that touch thousands of lives, not only in our Archdiocese but throughout the world. Our parish receives 25% of each dollar contributed up to our goal of $195, Then, we receive 50% of the additional funds received. This year, we will commit our parish rebates to: Our two sister parishes in Western Maryland: St. Joseph s Parish in Midland and St. Mary s Parish in Lonaconing St. Ambrose Parish in Baltimore City The Sister s Academy of Baltimore The Little Sisters of the Poor St. Louis Parish Needy Family Fund St. Louis School Tuition Assistance Fund Christlife Please answer the Archbishop s request and make a generous pledge. All pledges can be billed in ten monthly installments. Thank you in advance for your support.

A retreat is a wonderful way to grow closer to the Lord, to refresh yourself in body and spirit, to regain perspective on what's important in your life. The theme of this year's retreat is By His Wounds We Are Healed: Jesus transforms our human condition and heals us from within. Call Mike Leumas ( ) for additional information or to sign up for the weekend. Information can also be found on Loyola s website at Please join us! More than 200 donated boxes of Girl Scout cookies were distributed to the soldiers and to the USO Lounge. Many of our St. Louis Cub Scouts participated by making the cards that were handed out with the cookies. YOUTH MINISTRY Fire is mesmerizing I do not have an unhealthy fixation on fire or anything, but I have noticed how much fire is a part of our daily lives. How about cooking in the kitchen? Flames under a pot or pan, being greeted by brick oven fires at local restaurants? How about hanging out outdoors? S Mores around a bonfire and the warmth of a campfire on a cool evening? How about heating our homes? One realizes the importance of a working furnace when one doesn't have one! How about heating water? One small pilot light can decide if you have a hot or cold shower and I haven t even mentioned making coffee and tea yet! Not only is fire a part of our daily lives, but it can represent many things: Light, comfort, security, warmth. CYM has hosted two confirmation information nights in the last couple of weeks and I have used fire stories to symbolize the Sacrament and this process. In Acts 2: 1-13, 3 remarkable things happen to the apostles in an upper room during Pentecost: A powerful wind sweeps through the room, they begin to speak in different different languages, and tongues of fire came to rest on the heads of each of them (Could explain what happened to my own hair! Maybe it was the spirit!) Fire gave the apostles clarity and courage for the early church s mission. My prayer is the same for those in 10 th & 11 th grade who are beginning the Confirmation process. May the fire of the Holy Spirit, that same fire and Spirit from Pentecost, give you clarity and courage, light, warmth and security for the road ahead. I ask all parishioners to pray for these young men and women, that they might come to know and love our God through Jesus and the Spirit. I LL BE PRAYING FOR YOU! MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL CATHOLIC YOUTH MINISTRY: February 27: 9:30am Youth Mass March 2: HS CYM Speaker Series with Kristen & Pete Daub Dating & Relating 7:30-9pm Bishop Rms March 4: HS CYM Open Gym 7-10pm March 6: Deeper Waters 7pm March 11-13: Italian Dinner Weekend (Actual Dinner: 3/13 1:30-6:30pm) Call CYM to help! Each session begins with a delicious dinner at 6:45pm in the Parish Social Hall, followed by a video-based teaching, and small group discussion. The sessions end at 9:15pm. Maryland March for Life- March 14 th : In the fall of 2010, an act of medical negligence uncovered a secret abortion facility in Elkton, MD, where a perforated uterus nearly killed a woman, the trio of abortionists transported patients across state lines, practiced without a license, improperly transported a patient to a hospital, and improperly stored over 30 bodies of aborted children, even as late as the ninth month. The three physicians were reprimanded by the Board of Physicians Quality, but cannot be prosecuted in Maryland as they broke no state law. Protect Women: Hold Abortionists Accountable. Join the Maryland March for Life in Annapolis, Monday, March 14 th. The evening begins with Mass at 5:15 pm at. St. Mary s, celebrated by Archbishop Edwin O Brien. 6 SECOND COLLECTIONS February 26/27 Building/Maintenance Fund March 9 Eastern Europe (Ash Wednesday) March 26/27 Building/Maintenance Fund STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE Does a mother forget her baby? God provides for all, even the sparrows. Let us take time today to remember and praise God our Father, for the gifts He has bestowed upon us GOOD SAMARITAN MINISTRY: Are you good at getting people connected with each other? The Good Samaritan ministry has been at St. Louis for many years to connect parishioners with those in the parish who need short-term help. Most of the time, it involves offering to bring someone to church once or twice a month, other times to take someone to a medical appointment, or pick up groceries. We are looking for more people to share rides to Mass, since this is one of the most frequent requests. There is also an opportunity for someone to learn to be the coordinator for this loving ministry. It involves getting a request and sending s or making calls to the roster of volunteers to fill the need. Please contact Marianne Faulstich at the Parish Office at or mfaulstich@stlouisparish.org if you sense the Holy Spirit nudging you into this service to others. PLANNED GIVING As parishioners of Saint Louis Church, we are all beneficiaries of more than 150 years of service and parishioner generosity. If you are nearing the end of your payment to the Legacy Campaign, consider extended your pledge for another year or two. Or 3. If you are new to the parish or were unable to make a pledge in the past, consider doing your part now by making a pledge now.
