Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer Spontaneous prayers or A faith-based song Reflection Question for September 7 th In what situations, places, and/or persons do I most experience the presence of Christ? 2 Dear Parishioners, Many people believe that Jesus was a religious wonder-worker who went around performing miracles primarily to demonstrate his power and to prove his divinity to an unbelieving world. There are passages in the New Testament that seem to support the idea that Jesus miracles were intended only to convince people of his supernatural power and authority. These passages are in the decided minority, however. There are many more passages indicating that Jesus did his best to keep his healing miracles a secret. Far from seeking the spotlight, Jesus often ran from it. The Gospel of Matthew reflects this view (see Matthew 12:14-21). Jesus did not use his power to impress the multitudes or to win a following, rather he went out of his way to avoid such publicity. He often insisted that the people he healed should not tell anyone what had happened. Why did Jesus hide his mighty works from the general public in this fashion? Was it because he feared the Pharisees? Apparently not. He dealt very directly with the Pharisees, and it seems unlikely that they could have forced him underground with his message and ministry. Rather, the reserve we find in Jesus is an accurate reflection of the way God always works in human history. The full power of God is always veiled in order to leave room for human freedom and for the response of faith. Jesus knew that overwhelming demonstrations of power would draw people to God for the wrong reasons and in the wrong way. Faith motivated by fear of God, or aimed at favors from God, is not really faith. In Jesus ministry we see that, to God, the power of persuasion is superior to the power of coercion. God will win us by love, or not at all. Msgr. Luca THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Avoid fight or flight, talk through differences. What Does the Church Say About Catholic Social Teaching in the Public Square? (cont ) Catholic voters should use Catholic teaching to examine candidates positions on issues and should consider candidates integrity, philosophy, and performance. It is important for all citizens to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically, and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest (USCCB, Living the Gospel of Life, no.33) United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2007 THE ELIZABETH MINISTRY The Elizabeth Ministry is a new ministry sponsored by the St. Louis Respect Life Committee that will provide prayers and meals to families with newborns and newly adopted children, welcoming the children into their families and the St. Louis parish community. 6 YOUTH DIRECTOR S COMMENTS One of the toughest parts of my work here is to be forced to go to amusement parks during the summer. I was made to play at Hershey Park not once but twice in June and August. Rough life, huh? Anyway, just a few weeks ago, I was enjoying some time people watching and found myself next to Canyon River Rapids and other water park rides. I noticed something there: Everyone was laughing and shouting and generally in good spirits! (Except for one little boy crying because someone had stepped on his hand it wasn t me, I swear!) Anyway, for the most part, there was much fun and happiness, at least temporarily! Do you believe that Jesus wants you to be happy? Not just for a few hours at some amusement park, but forever and always? It s true! Part of what we believe is that God wants us to be truly fulfilled, to be deeply happy and satisfied. (Read John 10:10) Are you really happy right now? If so, thank Jesus for your joy. If not, turn to Him and ask for some of that abundant life that He offers! Then, be open and ready for the ride of your life (better than any roller coaster ride, too!) PLEASE KNOW THAT I WILL BE PRAYING FOR YOU. SPECIAL REQUEST: We are in need of catechists and mentors for our Grades 6-10 Monday Evening Religious Education. No need to have experience. We will train you!
