1 ST. LOUIS CHURCH August 21, 2011 TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Daily Mass Readings Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Next Sunday Isaiah 22: :1-5, :1-8 Revelation 21: :7-13 4:1-8 4:9-11 Jeremiah 20:7-9 Psalm 138:1-3, 6, 8 Psalm 149:1-6, 9 Psalm 139:1-6 Psalm 145: 10-13, Psalm 90:3-5, 12-14, 17 Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, Psalm 98:1, 7-9 Psalm 63:2-6, 8-9 Romans 11: Romans 12:1-2 Matthew 16: Matthew 23: Matthew 23:23-26 John 1:45-51 Matthew 24: Matthew 25:1-13 Matthew 25: Matthew 16: What is Lectio Divina? While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, August 28, 2011 Just before today s Gospel Peter had spoken for all the disciples to profess that Jesus was the Son of God, and Jesus entrusted to him the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Seemed like Peter had a pretty good understanding of his relationship with Jesus and his own mission in the Kingdom. Today, Jesus compares him to Satan! Have you ever thought that you had God figured out, knew exactly what to expect from him, and then something happens that turns everything upside-down? To save your life you must lose it. Remember, it s all about Jesus! 2 Dear Parishioners: A few years ago we were able to restore our 1855 Chapel located on Ten Oaks Road our first St. Louis Church. Since then there has been a renewed interest in our parish cemetery which surrounds the chapel. We are truly fortunate to have our own parish cemetery which enables us to have our loved ones buried so close to us. The chapel is open for personal prayer on Mondays through Saturdays from 11:00am to 1:00pm. I often remember the souls of all those buried at our cemetery both at Mass and in my personal prayers. Over the last few years we have also made considerable improvements to the appearance of our cemetery including clearing out sections that were overgrown, adding outdoor lighting around the chapel, removing the previous old wooden fences and adding a more appropriate ornamental fence with attractive signage. This week we opened a new section of the cemetery and have added a beautiful granite columbarium to receive the ashes of those who choose to be cremated. At one time, you may recall, cremation was prohibited for Catholics because at the time those who chose cremation did so as a sign of contempt for the Church s teaching on the resurrection of the dead. Today parishioners who choose cremation do so for many other reasons which do not conflict with our belief that for the faithful departed life is changed not ended. The new columbarium provides the option of above ground interment for those who would prefer that option. Since ours is a parish cemetery, we are reserving the use of our cemetery for the registered members of our parish community. This Thursday, August 25 th, we will celebrate the Feast of Saint Louis, our patron saint. Through his intercession let us ask the Lord to grant eternal rest and peace to our loved ones who rest at St Louis Cemetery. ~Msgr. Luca THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK A mistake proves that someone else at least tried. CHURCH LINENS: Altar linens are to be picked up this week by Ms. Wiedel and next week by Ms. Ballard. GOOD DEEDS OF THE CHILDREN: Laura made her bed; Matthew went to the store and helped pick birthday presents for his uncles; Tori helped her brother go to sleep; Becca was good in soccer camp; Gillian was nice to her brother; Samantha loaded the dishwasher; Glenn made his bed; Tristen worked on his work books; Tara got and delivered the mail; Jake took care of the dogs even when he didn t have to; Willie played a lot of games with his brother and sister; Ava helped her parents clean up the table. PARLEZ VOUS FRANÇAIS? Un peu? Si vous parlez français, the St Louis Haiti Committee could use your help (votre assistance). Two of the sisters who run St John s School in Les Gonaives will be our guests from October 6 through October 13 to celebrate Haiti Weekend (October 8-9). We are looking for parishioners who speak French to join us and the sisters as they tour around Baltimore and Washington, and for dinners, get-togethers, and Masses. Sisters Marianne and Celestine have visited us before. They are getting more proficient in English, but it would be great if you were there to lend a hand for when our French and their English gets bogged down. If you can spare a day, a morning, an afternoon, or an evening, please contact Marianne Faulstich, en anglais, s il vous plait! It should be great fun for all. ALTAR FLOWER MEMORIALS: The flowers used to decorate our church altar, shrines, and chapel altar are available to honor a loved one who is living or deceased, as an expression of gratitude to God on special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays or other significant events. Flowers for the Shrine of St. Louis, Shrine of St. Joseph or the Blessed Mother are $50 each; Pieta is $75; Altar flowers are $75; and Chapel Altar are $75. Arrangements may be made by calling the parish office ( ) Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am and 5pm. All who are honored will be acknowledged in the bulletin. The flowers for the Altar, the Pieta, the Blessed Mother, St. Joseph, and St. Louis are given in loving memory of Anna Tomalis. Our sincere gratitude is extended to her family for this weekend s and last weekend s flowers. EMHC AND PASTORAL VISITORS: You are invited to attend a Morning of Prayer, Commissioning and Formation on Saturday, August 27th, at 8:00 a.m. in the Church. Please call Vickie Yozwiak at (410) for more information on our Wee Praise and elementary ministry teams or call Pat Sprankle at (410) for info about our youth programs. YOUTH MINISTRY I have had a very eventful summer so far. I enjoyed hot days at the shore, one week in Ocean City with the family, and one week building homes in Sussex County, Delaware. I was recently suspended over 30 feet by a harness and cable, team building with the youth leadership team and was living in suspense on a Mystery trip which turned out to be mini golf marathons! At the end of July, I braved 100 degree weather at the O Dwyer Retreat House, where 63 youth leaders and 14 staff lived servant leadership. During this occasion, I was asked to play the Holy Spirit. (Yes, you heard correctly!) Along with a rather snug baby blue graduation gown, I energetically used my hands as small wings and flitted (is that a word?) about, bringing cheer and joy to those in the room. Well, I hope I did, anyway What is your image of the Holy Spirit? Is it of a fairly large man in a light blue robe making a fool of himself? I hope not The traditional symbol is that of a dove or even fire. What do you think about? I encountered the Holy Spirit at each of my summer stops listed above and so many other times. This weekend, 30+ young people are attending a Confirmation retreat and soon the whole candidate group will begin classes (September 12 & 14). Please pray that they might experience a deeper presence of the Spirit in their lives. Please pray also for their catechists (we still need more!) Enjoy your summer and take some extra time to ask the Holy Spirit into your heart. I ll be praying for you! MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL CATHOLIC YOUTH MINISTRY: August 20-21: Please pray for the Confirmation Candidates on the Overnight Retreat August 24 & 31: Catechist & Mentor Trainings, 7-9pm August 28: BRUNCH at Grassroots Homeless Shelter September 2: High School CYM Open Gym, 7-10pm September 8: September 9: Catechist & Mentor Training, 7-9pm Middle School CYM Monthly Dance, 7-10pm. A planned gift to Saint Louis Church, will sustain this good work for generations to come. For more information on making a planned gift to Saint Louis Church, contact Mary Helfrich, Development Director at MHelfrich@stlouisparish.org or OPERATION STANDDOWN: Help homeless Veterans in Baltimore! St. Louis has been invited to participate in OPERATION STANDDOWN this fall. Our assignment is to provide 500 bath towels, 500 individually boxed bars of soap and 500 pairs of adultsized shower sandals (i.e. flip-flops). If you can help, please bring the donations to Room 301 the weekends of September 3-4 and September We will box them up and get them to members of the St. Vincent DePaul Society who are part of the planning for this outreach. Questions? Please contact Marianne Faulstich, Pastoral Associate, at , or mfaulstich@stlouisparish.org. Thank you for your support. Preserving our Treasured Legacy Campaign: Please consider making a sacrificial pledge to this campaign that will enable us to bring down the mortgage of our new Church and Pastoral Center. 1. If you gave to the Heritage of Hope Campaign, which ended in 2001, consider making a pledge to the Legacy Campaign. Or 2. If you are nearing the end of your payment to the Legacy Campaign, consider extended your pledge for another year or two. Or 3. If you are new to the parish or were unable to make a pledge in the past, consider doing your part now by making a pledge now. Everyone is invited and encouraged to support and participate in this important time in the life of our parish. For additional information contact the parish office at Thanks sincerely to all who have been supportive. ST VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY: If you have a clothing donation, you may drop your items into the blue St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Bin located in the rear of the parking lot by the Maintenance Barn. If you need to obtain a receipt for your clothing donations, you need to call St. Vincent de Paul directly at Clothing items should be placed in sturdy plastic bags and tied securely and then placed in the bin, making sure that the bags are pushed up and over the inside ledge. 15 gallon trash bags fit well in the clothing bin drop slot. This is a wonderful opportunity for used clothing in good condition to be distributed to the poor. It would be regrettable should there be the need to remove the bin from the St. Louis Campus. Thank you for you understanding and cooperation. ANNUAL SCHOOL SUPPPLY AND COAT COL- LECTION: The St. Louis Respect Life Committee and Knights of Columbus are sponsoring our annual collection of school supplies and coats in support of our sister parishes in Western Maryland on August 20th & 21st. We are also requesting donations of children's hats and gloves. Please plan to drop off your donations at the maintenance building (south corner of the parking lot) when you come to Mass that weekend. Please remember: clean and serviceable coats, hats and gloves only! For more information please call Bane Kelley at
