1 ST. LOUIS CHURCH September 18, 2011 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Daily Mass Readings Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Next Sunday Isaiah 55:6-9 Ezra 1:1-6 Ezra 6:7-8, 12, Ephesians 4:1-7, Haggai 1:1-8 Haggai 2:1-9 Zechariah 2:5-9, Ezekiel 18:25-28 Psalm 145:2-3, 8-9, Psalm 126:1-6 Psalm 122:1-5 Psalm 19:2-5 Psalm 149:1-6, 9 Psalm 43:1-4 Jeremiah 31: Psalm 25:4-9 Philippians 1: 20-24, 27 Philippians 2: 1-11 Matthew 20: 1-16 Luke 8:16-18 Luke 8:19-21 Matthew 9:9-13 Luke 9:7-9 Luke 9:18-22 Luke 9:43-45 Matthew 21: What is Lectio Divina? While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, September 25, 2011 The way of righteousness is not all that complex. Even the chief priests and elders, who rarely understood Jesus message, recognized that it s what you do, not what you say you will do that really matters. Think of the times when your actions and attitudes do not match what you say you believe. Perhaps pray with today s Psalm 25: your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me your paths.... ALTAR FLOWER MEMORIALS: The flowers used to decorate our church altar, shrines, and chapel altar are available to honor a loved one who is living or deceased, as an expression of gratitude to God on special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays or other significant events. Flowers for the Shrine of St. Louis, Shrine of St. Joseph or the Blessed Mother are $50 each; Pieta is $75; Altar flowers are $75; and Chapel Altar are $75. Arrangements may be made by calling the parish office ( ) Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am and 5pm. All who are honored will be acknowledged in the bulletin. The flowers for the Altar are given in loving memory of Doff Fleshman. Our sincere gratitude is extended to Sally Fleshman for providing this weekend s flowers. GOOD DEEDS OF THE CHILDREN: Caroline helped her sister make her bed; Christopher set and cleaned the kitchen table; Willie played board games with his sister and let her choose which one; Jake helped his sister make a duct-tape braided bracelet; Meg helped without being asked; Sarah helped her mom, took care of the dogs, and donated shoes; Mandi played with her brother before her mom and dad got up; Samantha read to her brother; Alexandra helped her friend carry text books; Olivia prayed for people hurt in 9/11; Nicholas took great care of his pets; Kelly helped out at a yard sale and is donating some of the money; Ava always does what her brother wants to do; Eric helped out at a yard sale and is donating some of the money; Elijah gave a silly band to a friend; Becca tried her best at swim team; Abby made her bed; Tori helped Becca and Jeffrey clean the playroom. CHURCH LINENS: Altar linens are to be picked up this week by Ms. Fleshman and next week by Ms. Flynn.
2 Dear Parishioners: Beginning on the weekend of November 26/27, the First Sunday of Advent, the Catholic Church in all the English speaking nations of the world will begin using a revised translation of the Mass. It s the same Mass just new words. However, the occasion of this revision gives us the opportunity to deepen our understanding of the Sacred Liturgy and to appreciate its meaning and importance in our lives. To that end, starting next weekend, a colored insert will be included in the bulletin each weekend with important information and lessons about the Mass, the revised translations and how we worship this God whom we love. I encourage you to take the time to read these inserts and come to a deeper knowledge of and love for the Mass. As we prepare for the implementation in Advent, this time can be a wonderful time of preparation and learning for each of us reminding us of the incredibly marvelous gift God has given us in the Eucharist. ~Msgr. 4 ST. LOUIS ALTAR GUILD NEEDS YOUR HELP. Maybe you ve thought about helping out in the parish, but can t commit to weekly or monthly meetings. Consider joining an Altar Guild team, men and women volunteers working behind the scenes to keep our church and chapels neat and clean, and to support the beautiful Masses and liturgies we celebrate there. Following are descriptions of the various ministries. If one of them appeals to you as a way to serve Our Lord and the parish, call Betsey Swancar at to volunteer or with any questions. Church and Cemetery Chapel Cleaning: Teams of four to five members rotate weekly to clean the main church. Rotations occur about four times per year. With everyone working together, the time commitment is usually about 1-1/2 to 2 hours per rotation. The Cemetery Chapel is cleaned monthly by individuals or teams of two. Laundering Liturgical Linens: Duties include washing and ironing small linens used in daily and weekend Masses and sacraments. Certain guidelines must be followed and instruction is provided. Rotations are about six times per year. Laundering Altar Server Robes: This ministry involves periodic laundering of servers robes. If your child is an Altar Server, this is an ideal way to support him or her and the parish. COME! DO NOT BE AFRAID. BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD. For more than 20 years, St Louis has been privileged to offer Eucharistic Adoration in the Chapel from 7:30am Sunday through the day, through the night until 6:30am on Monday. The Chapel is open and the door is unlocked until 10pm each Sunday night. Besides drop-in adorers, there is a schedule of those who commit to a specific time slot since it is essential that the Blessed Sacrament not be left alone. This is what we are looking for: individuals and families willing to promise to be there on Sundays at a particular time. The overnight hours, 9pm 6:30am on Monday are covered, but it s the easier times where we need people: 7:30 9:00am, and 11:00am 9:00pm. This is an awesome opportunity to spend quiet time with the Lord carve out a little retreat in the midst of our hectic lives. Time periods are one hour, but even if you can only promise 30 minutes, seize the opportunity. Schedule it to fit in after Mass or return in the afternoon or evening. One way to approach it is to have a team of several individuals or couples who agree on who covers which weekend(s) each month. Sharing the time might make it easier to commit, since it would be on a rotation rather than a weekly obligation. We have a roster of people who could substitute for you when necessary. Please contact Marcella Passetti at or mpasetti@medicine.umaryland.edu, or Phyllis Hipp at , bpredberry@hotmail.com, or the Parish Office for more information. ACTS RETREATS: Come and spend a weekend with the Lord in Spirit and fellowship. The St. Louis Men's ACTS retreat will be held September 22-25, Contact Helmut Seifert at seifert0@comcast.net or Tom Richie: tnrichie@comcast.net for more information. The next women s retreat will be held October, 20-23, Contact Karen Brooms: kbbrooms@yahoo.com or Cherie Congedo: cherie.congedo@verizon.net for more information. Both retreats will be held at Bon Secours Spiritual Center in Marriottsville. YOUR CHILD AND TECHNOLOGY is the topic of the next Knights of Columbus open meeting. All are invited to hear Dr. Paul Barker, president of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, expound on a healthy and safe engagement with a wired world. This event will be held on September 27th at 7:30pm in the Social Hall of the Pastoral Center at St Louis. Light refreshments will be provided. Please join us. For more information contact Leo Mortimer at THE ST. LOUIS GARDEN CLUB is visiting the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens and there are seats available for parishioners and friends on a first come, first serve basis. These gardens comprise 50 landscaped acres with garden "rooms" as well as a Rose Garden, Sunken Garden, Asian Valley, Perennial Garden, etc. The Conservatory is filled with colorful displays of exotic and unusual plants. There will be a trained Garden Guide for every 15 people and a wonderful soup and salad buffet included. The cost per person is $65. The bus will leave the St. Louis parking lot on Thursday, October 13, 2011, at 8:30am and return at 6:30pm. To sign up or for further information, contact Beth Felsecker at or Lucie Pettis at lucie.pettis@gmail.com. OCTOBER CONCERTS AT ST. LOUIS! Finally the sun is shining and the weather matches our students bright, sunny and excited to start each day! We had a great week as we welcomed our middle-school parents to the school for Back-to-School night, giving them a chance to meet their child s teacher and run through their schedule. Our Girls on the Run program has expanded to the middle school, and the girls will begin training this week for their 5-K to take place in December. Sports Club also got started for some after-school fun! Lots of events and activities coming up take a look!

We had a tremendous response last year more than doubling our profits from just under $6000 to more than $13000!! And all for doing nothing other than weekly shopping that we are already doing! As you leave church next week, please stop by the table outside and register your grocery store cards for their bonus programs with our school volunteers. We will take your information and register for you even if you don t have your cards with you. Thank you so much! Oktoberfest! Please mark your calendar and start looking for those lederhosen! The Canon Law of the Church and the regulations of the Archdiocese of Baltimore state that as children reach the age of discretion (about 7 for most children), they are to be invited to prepare for these two sacraments. Children are also to be enrolled in a formal religious education program in a parish or Catholic school at least one year before beginning preparation for these sacraments. Informational letters will be mailed home this week to all 2 nd grade students whose family is registered at St Louis Church and who are currently registered in our religious education program or enrolled in St. Louis School. If your child attends Trinity School or is homeschooled & you feel they are eligible to begin their sacramental preparation, or if you feel you should have received a letter and did not, please call the Office of Religious Education at The upcoming Parent/Child meetings for First Reconciliation Preparation will be held in the Howard Bishop Meeting Rooms on the following dates and times: Wednesday, October 12 at 7:00 pm or Wednesday, October 19 at 7:00 pm or Wednesday, October 26 at 7:00pm. Parents, please note it is not necessary to sign up ahead of time for one of the meetings. You simply attend just one of the meetings listed above. Please also remember that this meeting is for parents and the child who will be preparing to receive First Reconciliation. YOUTH MINISTRY After this past week, my brain is water-logged! Flooding everywhere, even inside our house! How about you? How did you and your family fair? As I hiked the week of the floods, I braved not only large and deep puddles, but heavy humidity and the threat of the West Nile Virus. And I was just walking 4 miles on the B & A Trail in Severna Park! I found it interesting that I had written here very very recently about being dehydrated on a hike. Was this flooding a late answer to my thirsty prayers, God? Seriously speaking, it seems odd that something as cooling and refreshing as water can also cause such misery, frustration, chaos and even death when it becomes torrential. Pray with me for all of those affected by flooding and also those in Texas affected by wildfires and lack of water. Have you ever prayed intensely for something and, when God answers that prayer, you wondered why you prayed for it in the first place? I prayed for patience and God gave me opportunities to either be patient or impatient. I prayed to remain humble and God showed me God s greatness. I prayed for peace and God invited me to work for justice and mercy. Isn t it interesting that God s power and love is so much more than we can ask or imagine? As you finally get to school and continue this new school year, pray to be open to the Spirit of God in your life. I ll be praying for you! SPECIAL NOTE: HELP WANTED! 6 ADULT FORMATION RCIA needs YOU! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process by which men and women seekers learn about our Catholic Faith and prepare to join us at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion. Those who are already baptized are received into the Catholic Church, confirmed and receive Communion. This loving evangelization is a mission for every member of the parish: Pray for those curious about the Church. Welcome people around you at Mass whom you don t recognize. Consider becoming an active member of the RCIA team. We are looking for people who can share their faith as sponsors or catechists, be part of the support system by helping with food and beverages each week. RCIA meets each Wednesday evening from 7:00pm 8:30pm beginning September 21. Members of the team will gather in early September to review the schedule, talk about the roles available, and get familiar with the handouts and process. Is the Holy Spirit stirring your heart to be part of the RCIA team? Listen! Pay attention! Contact Marianne Faulstich, Pastoral Associate, at or mfaulstich@stlouisparish.org.
