January 16, 2011 James Angehr, Pastor P. O. Box Lubbock, Texas / Mission Statement The community of Providence Presbyterian Church seeks, by our words and actions, to love Lubbock and West Texas with the shalom of Jesus Christ. We want to engage Lubbock and West Texas in the arenas of proclaiming truth, contributing to and renewing culture, and practicing mercy with justice. We will seek to plant a closelynetworked series of medium-sized churches that will reflect both the city of Lubbock and the heavenly city to come.
2 * PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP Hymn 111 THE LORD S DAY January 16, 2011 This is My Father s World Words: Maltbie D. Babcock, Tune: Franklin L. Sheppard, 1915; Arranged by Edward Shippen Barnes, * CALL TO WORSHIP Romans 4:1-8 Abraham Justified by Faith 1 What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness. 4 Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. 5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, 6 just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works: 7 Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; 8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin. * Congregation Standing All music copied by permission of CCLI # Page Page 2 -
3 HYMN 34 The God of Abraham Praise Words: Thomas Olivers, Tune: Jewish Melody, arranged by Meyer Lyon, * INVOCATION HYMN I Am Jesus Little Lamb Words: Henrietta L. Van Hayn, Music: Christopher Miner. 1. I am Jesus little lamb, Ever glad at heart I am; For my Shepherd gently guides me, Knows my need, and well provides me, Loves me ev ry day the same, Even calls me by my name 2. Day by day, at home, away, Jesus is my staff and stay. When I hunger, Jesus feeds me, Into pleasant pastures leads me; When I thirst, He bids me go Where the quiet waters flow. 3. Who so happy as I am, Even now the Shepherd s lamb? And when my short life is ended, By His angel host attended, He shall fold me to His breast, There within his arms to rest. Repeat First Verse I am Jesus little lamb, Ever glad at heart I am; For my Shepherd gently guides me, Knows my need, and well provides me, Loves me ev ry day the same, Even calls me by my name - Page Page 4 -
4 CONFESSION OF SIN Father in heaven, we thank you for the freedom you have given us through the life, death, and resurrection of your Son. But we confess today that we often live like slaves. Instead of living under your delight, we avoid you in shame and guilt. Instead of receiving your favor as a gift, we try to earn it with our efforts. Instead of accepting your freedom, we prefer our chains. Instead of pursuing your purposes, we cling to our short-sighted agendas. Forgive us. Embrace us. Cleanse us. Heal us. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON IN CHRIST OFFERING OLD TESTAMENT READING 1 Kings 11:1-13 Solomon Turns from the Lord 1 Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, 2 from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the people of Israel, You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods. Solomon clung to these in love. 3 He had 700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. 4 For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. 5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6 So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not wholly follow the Lord, as David his father had done. 7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem. 8 And so he did for all his foreign wives, who made offerings and sacrificed to their gods. The Lord Raises Adversaries 9 And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice 10 and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. But he did not keep what the Lord commanded. 11 Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant. 12 Yet for the sake of David your father I will not do it in your days, but I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 However, I will not tear away all the kingdom, but I will give one tribe to your son, for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem that I have chosen. - Page Page 6 -
5 * HYMN Whate er My God Ordains Is Right 1998 David Braud Music. Words: Samuel Rodigast, Music: David Braud. 1. Whate er my God ordains is right, Holy His will abideth. I will be still whate er He does, And follow where He guideth. He is my God, Though dark my road. He holds me that I shall not fall Wherefore to Him I leave it all 2. Whate er my God ordains is right, He never will deceive me He leads me by the proper path, I know He will not leave me I take, content, What He hath sent His hand can turn my griefs away And patiently I wait His day 3. Whate er my God ordains is right, Though now this cup in drinking May bitter seem to my faint heart, I take it all unshrinking My God is true, Each morn anew Sweet comfort yet shall fill my heart And pain and sorrow shall depart 4. Whate er my God ordains is right, Here shall my stand be taken Though sorrow, need, or death be mine, Yet I am not forsaken My Father s care Is round me there He holds me that I shall not fall And so to Him I leave it all He holds me that I shall not fall And so to Him I leave it all PRAYER OF INTERCESSION SERMON Acts 20:17-38 Paul Speaks to the Ephesian Elders 17 Now from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him. 18 And when they came to him, he said to them: You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, 19 serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews; 20 how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, 21 testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. - Page Page 8 -
6 24 But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. 25 And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. 26 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all of you, 27 for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. 28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. 29 I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30 and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31 Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish everyone with tears. 32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel. 34 You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me. 35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. * HYMN 599 Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us Words: Dorothy Ann Thrupp, Music: William B. Bradbury, And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. 37 And there was much weeping on the part of all; they embraced Paul and kissed him, 38 being sorrowful most of all because of the word he had spoken, that they would not see his face again. And they accompanied him to the ship. - Page Page 10 -

Congregational Meeting, January 23 After the worship service next Sunday, January 23, we will hold a congregational meeting to discuss and vote upon our 2011 budget. In preparation of this meeting, please go to the "Documents" page under the "PPC Community" tab to access the 2011 Budget Cover Letter, 2011 Budget Line Items, and minutes from our last congregational meeting; these documents will be the basis of our discussion and voting on Sunday. (Contact Dell Schipper, our "clerk of Session," or administrator for the group of elders, for hard copies of these documents.) Additionally, the building committee will give an update and presentation at the meeting. Anyone is welcome to attend the meeting. Arts and Culture Night, January 28 Tertullian asked, what has Jerusalem to do with Athens? The church s relationship to culture has been tenuous at best and hostile at worst, for thousands of years. What is the relationship between Christianity and culture? Mark Gring will summarize various Christian responses, present a framework for critiquing cultural events, and introduce a vision for Arts and Culture Night. Location and evening time will be announced soon, but please RSVP now to Sean Cunningham at raidergator@gmail.com to attend. 10 Sermon Notes Prayers of Meditation For Those Not Participating in Communion Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, help me to look to You as the fulfillment of all my needs, and to turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in a life of committed discipleship in Your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with Your people, and live in the fullness of Your Spirit. Amen.
