Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, help me to look to You as the fulfillment of all my needs, and to turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in a life of committed discipleship in Your church. 7 Follow-up Questions to the Sermon 1. The "crowd" is first mentioned in Luke 22:47, but its identity is not revealed until v. 52. How does this delay in showing the nature of the crowd build tension into this scene? How have "crowds" previously been portrayed in Luke's gospel, and is this instance similar or different? 2. Why does Jesus refer to himself specifically as the "Son of Man" in Luke 22:48? 3. We know from John's gospel that it is Peter who cuts the ear off a soldier during Jesus' arrest. Why do you think that Luke chose not to name Peter in Luke 22:50, given his prominence in the rest of the chapter? 4. How does Luke weave 22:47-53 very tightly into what comes before and after that text? 5. How does and how can being with Jesus make you a better, more authentic person? Women s Ministry Luncheon Ladies - mark your calendars for Saturday, May 16, 12:00 noon for a luncheon at LaDiosa Cellars, th Street. New Theology Study Pastor Jim will be leading a new theological discussion group beginning in May. We will be studying volume 3 of Herman Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics Sin and Salvation in Christ. The meetings will occur every other week, last for roughly an hour and a half, and cover about a chapter of Bavinck at a time. The first session is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, May 5, at 4.00 p.m., with location to be announced. Contact Pastor Jim if you're interested in coming, or if you would want to come but desire a different meeting day or time. Please purchase the book and have read through chapter 1 ("The Origin of Sin") by the time of the initial meeting.
