THE LORD S DAY May 3, 2009 * HYMN In Christ Alone Keith Getty and Stuart Townend Thankyou Music 1. In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song This Cornerstone, this solid Ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All, Here in the love of Christ I stand. 2. In Christ alone! - who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save 'Til on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live. 3. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious Day Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory Sin's curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ. 4. No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me; From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand 'Til He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I'll stand! No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand 'Til He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I'll stand! * Congregation Standing All music copied by permission of CCLI # Page Page 2 -

* CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 72:8-17 * HYMN 441 Jesus Shall Reign Based on Psalm 72. Words: Isaac Watts, Music: John Hatton, May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth! 9 May desert tribes bow down before him, and his enemies lick the dust! 10 May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands render him tribute; may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts! 11 May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him! 12 For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper. 13 He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy. 14 From oppression and violence he redeems their life, and precious is their blood in his sight. 15 Long may he live; may gold of Sheba be given to him! May prayer be made for him continually, and blessings invoked for him all the day! 16 May there be abundance of grain in the land; on the tops of the mountains may it wave; may its fruit be like Lebanon; and may people blossom in the cities like the grass of the field! 17 May his name endure forever, his fame continue as long as the sun! May people be blessed in him, all nations call him blessed! * INVOCATION - Page Page 4 -

* HYMN Before the Throne of God Above Lyrics by Charitie Less Bancroft, 1863; alt. lyrics and music by Vikki Cook Sovereign Grace Worship (ASCAP). Sovereign Grace Music, a division of Sovereign Grace Ministries. 1. Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea A great High Priest whose name is love Who ever lives and pleads for me My name is graven on His hands My name is written on His heart I know that while in heaven He stands No tongue can bid me thence depart No tongue can bid me thence depart 2. When Satan tempts me to despair And tells me of the guilt within Upward I look and see Him there Who made an end of all my sin Because the sinless Savior died My sinful soul is counted free For God, the Just, is satisfied To look on Him and pardon me To look on Him and pardon me 3. Behold Him there, the risen Lamb My perfect, spotless righteousness The great unchangeable I AM The King of Glory and of Grace One with Himself I cannot die My soul is purchased by His blood My life is hid with Christ on high With Christ my Savior and my God One with Himself I cannot die My soul is purchased by His blood My life is hid with Christ on high With Christ my Savior and my God With Christ my Savior and my God With Christ my Savior and my God CONFESSION OF SIN Our Lord Christ, We have sinned against you, and rebelled against you. As prophet, you have revealed to us your will for our salvation. Yet we question if you are true, trust in other voices, run to other prophets, find other stories more seductive, and wish for only affirmation and never correction. We have sinned against you. As priest, you have offered yourself for the Father s justice and have reconciled sinners to the Almighty. Yet we question if by faith we are truly forgiven, wallow in guilt, swim in pride, wash our hands in other rivers, and deny that we were sinful at birth, from the time our mothers conceived us. We have sinned against you. As king, you rule, and reign, and defend. Yet we question if you are ruling well, desire more power for ourselves, spurn any authority over our own, crave different defenders, and believe that we would be better rulers. We have sinned against you. Yet we plead, our Christ, that you would intercede and forgive even now, on the basis of your obedience to death, even death on a cross. May we bow our knees, and our tongues confess, that you are Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Amen. - Page 6 -

ASSURANCE OF PARDON IN CHRIST CONFESSION OF FAITH Question: How does Christ execute the office of a prophet? RECOGNITION OF RUF GRADUATES * HYMN 642 Be Thou My Vision Ancient Irish Poem, 8 th Century, translated by Mary E. Byrne, Traditional Irish Melody. Answer: Christ executes the office of a prophet, in his revealing to the church, in all ages, by his Spirit and word, and in divers ways of administration, the whole will of God, in all things concerning their edification and salvation. Westminster Larger Catechism 43 OLD TESTAMENT READING 2 Samuel 1 David Hears of Saul's Death 1 After the death of Saul, when David had returned from striking down the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag. 2 And on the third day, behold, a man came from Saul's camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage. 3 David said to him, Where do you come from? And he said to him, I have escaped from the camp of Israel. 4 And David said to him, How did it go? Tell me. And he answered, The people fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead, and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead. 5 Then David said to the young man who told him, How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead? 6 And the young man who told him said, By chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and behold, the chariots and the horsemen were close upon him. 7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, Here I am. 8 And he said to me, Who are you? I answered him, I am an Amalekite. 9 And he said to me Stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has seized me, and yet my life still lingers. 10 So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the armlet that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord. - Page Page 8 -

11 Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. 12 And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. 13 And David said to the young man who told him, Where do you come from? And he answered, I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite. 14 David said to him, How is it you were not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the Lord's anointed? 15 Then David called one of the young men and said, Go, execute him. And he struck him down so that he died. 16 And David said to him, Your blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, I have killed the Lord's anointed. David's Lament for Saul and Jonathan 17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son, 18 and he said it should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in the Book of Jashar. He said: 19 Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen! 20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult. 21 You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you, nor fields of offerings! For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil. 22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty. 23 Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions. 24 You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet, who put ornaments of gold on your apparel. 25 How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan lies slain on your high places. 26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant have you been to me; your love to me was extraordinary, surpassing the love of women. 27 How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war perished! 7 OFFERING PRAYER OF INTERCESSION SERMON Luke 22:54-62 * HYMN How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds Bill Moore Music. Words: John Newton, Music: Alexander Reinagle (arr. Bill Moore). 1. How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds In a believer s ear! It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds, And drives away his fear. 2. It makes the wounded spirit whole, And calms the troubled breast; Tis manna to the hungry soul, And to the weary, rest. 3. Dear Name, the rock on which I build, My shield and hiding place, My never failing treasury, filled With boundless stores of grace! 4. By Thee, my prayers acceptance gain, Although with sin defiled; Satan accuses me in vain, And I am owned a child. 6. Weak is the effort of my heart, And cold my warmest thought; But when I see Thee as Thou art, I ll praise Thee as I ought. 7. Til then I would Thy love proclaim With every fleeting breath, And may the music of Thy name Refresh my soul in death. SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER We hold the elements while they are being passed, so we can partake together. *DOXOLOGY Old Hundredth - Hymn 731 Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him, all creatures here below: Praise him above, ye heav nly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost - Amen. * BENEDICTION 5. Jesus, my Shepherd, Brother, Friend, My Prophet, Priest, and King, My Lord, my life, my way, My end, Accept the praise I bring. - Page 12 -

Prayers of Meditation For Those Not Participating in Communion Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, help me to look to You as the fulfillment of all my needs, and to turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in a life of committed discipleship in Your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with Your people, and live in the fullness of Your Spirit. Amen. Follow-up Questions to the Sermon 1. Why do you think Peter followed Jesus (Luke 22:54)? Check the parallel accounts. 2. Do the different versions of Peter's denying Jesus in different gospels cohere? 3. What are the ironies embedded in Luke 22:63-65? 4. How does the book of Acts complete the arc of Peter's character? How does that give us hope? 5. How can you in Christ become more courageous for Jesus and less fearful and prone to deny? PPC Announcements Friendship Registry Located on the end of the row is a friendship registry. Please let us know of your attendance in worship this morning by filling out the registry and passing it down the row.
