Amnon said to him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister. 5 Jonadab said to him, Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. And when your father comes to see you, say to him, Let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand. 6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. And when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand. 7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go to your brother Amnon's house and prepare food for him. 8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house, where he was lying down. And she took dough and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight and baked the cakes. 9 And she took the pan and emptied it out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Send out everyone from me. So everyone went out from him. 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from your hand. And Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother. 11 But when she brought them near him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, Come, lie with me, my sister. 12 She answered him, No, my brother, do not violate me, for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this outrageous thing. 13 As for me, where could I carry my shame? And as for you, you would be as one of the outrageous fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you. 14 But he would not listen to her, and being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her.

5 15 Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, Get up! Go! 16 But she said to him, No, my brother, for this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you did to me. But he would not listen to her. 17 He called the young man who served him and said, Put this woman out of my presence and bolt the door after her. 18 Now she was wearing a long robe with sleeves, for thus were the virgin daughters of the king dressed. So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her. 19 And Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long robe that she wore. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Men s Group Gathering This Week Please plan on attending the Second Wednesday Men s Group gathering at the Boys and Girls Club, th Street. It is this Wednesday, November 11, at 7:00 p.m. Pastor Jim will lead a discussion on Discovering Christ in the Old Testament. The Men s Group is open to all men of Providence (and guests who ve never been to Providence) age 12 and up. It s a great time of fellowship around the Word and getting to know other men in Christ. Please come. Call Peter Griffith if there are any questions, Building Committee and Capital Campaign Sunday School Next Week On Sunday, November 15, the adult Sunday School classes will combine in the parlor to hear from our building committee about the status of our capital campaign and the work of the committee. During that Sunday School hour, we will also set aside time for both Q&A and prayer. Everyone is invited! In the meantime, please pray for the Lord s wisdom and guidance with our 2009 capital campaign. Also, prayerfully consider contributing to the capital campaign as we seek to carry out our vision and mission as a church. 8 Regular Activities (Please refer to the newsletter for meeting dates.) Community Groups Small groups meet during the week. A group meets on Sunday afternoons at the Gring household. Contact Mark or Dana Gring at for more details. Young Adults, Grad Students, and Young Professionals A group meets every other Sunday evening for fellowship and prayer. Contact Chelsea Collins at: chelseapillsbury@hotmail.com or A Young Adult Bible Study is held on alternate Thursdays, 8:30 p.m., at the Sells home (corner of 19 th and Elgin, phone: ). The study is led by Sean Cunningham, who can be reached at or raidergator@gmail.com. This fall s study is on the book of Philippians. Midweek Homemeetings are open to everyone. These are held on the first, third, and fifth Wednesdays of the month (except for holidays and vacations). One homemeeting is at the Dalton home (10208 Nashville) and the Sartin home ( th Street). On alternating nights, one house will host the adults and the other will serve as a place for young children to play (with adult supervision). Jeremy Dalton is leading a discussion on Hebrews. Theological Study Group Pastor Jim is leading a theological discussion group, which is studying volume 3 of Herman Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics Sin and Salvation in Christ. The meetings will occur every other week on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in Classroom 7 at the church building, last for roughly an hour and a half, and cover about a chapter of Bavinck at a time. Contact Pastor Jim for additional details. Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) at Texas Tech RUF is going strong this fall. The Large Group Meetings are Wednesdays at AG 214. Visit for more information. Steve Percifield is the campus minister. Men s Activities All men are invited to participate in two weekly activities. The Men s Bible Study meets at 7:00 a.m. every Tuesday at Sugar Brown s, th Street. The Men s Prayer Breakfast is on Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. at Market Street Café, 50 th Street and Indiana Avenue. All men, aged 12 and up, are welcome to a monthly Men s Gathering, on the second Wednesday, 7:00 p.m., at the Lubbock Boys & Girls Club, th Street. Women s Ministry Bible Studies: Regular Bible study groups are open to all women. The Morning Group meets on Wednesdays. Every other Wednesday is a time for Bible/Book Study at 10:00 a.m. at the Angehr's home, nd Street. Meal Ministry - Shared Joy, Shared Pain, Shared Meal: The women of Providence bring meals to people in the church when needed - especially births, deaths, hospitalizations, and illnesses. If you would be willing to participate, contact Becky Schipper. (Participating can be as simple as making brownies or as involved as a whole meal.)
