But we confess today that we often live like slaves. Instead of living under your delight, we avoid you in shame and guilt. 5 OLD TESTAMENT READING 1 Kings 15:1-8 Abijam Reigns in Judah 1 Now in the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam the son of Nebat, Abijam began to reign over Judah. 2 He reigned for three years in Jerusalem. Spring Break Causes Change to Wednesday Nights Our first and third Wednesday nights are proving to be a great way to connect with others in our church. For details about the new program of home groups and children s catechism classes, please refer to Pastor Jim s letter on the website (PPC Community > Documents > Miscellaneous). Because of Spring Break, the third Wednesday meeting for March was changed to this week on the fourth Wednesday, March 24. The program will be Don't Make Me Use My Opera Voice! Operatic Culture in La Boheme, led by Matthew and Allison Smith; the evening s focus will be opera, opera appreciation, and viewing this beautiful and misunderstood art form through a Christ-centered lens. Theological Study Group: Pastor Jim is leading a theological discussion group, which is studying Herman Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics. The meetings occur every other week on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in Classroom 7 at the church building, and lasts for roughly an hour and a half. Contact Pastor Jim for additional details. Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) at Texas Tech RUF is busy with the spring semester. Visit for more information. Steve Percifield is the campus minister. Men s Activities All men are invited to participate in two weekly activities. The Men s Bible Study meets at 7:00 a.m. every Tuesday at Rudy s Barbeque, 4930 South Loop 289. The Men s Prayer Breakfast is on Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. at Market Street Café, 50 th Street and Indiana Avenue. All men, aged 12 and up, are welcome to the monthly 2 nd Wednesday Men s Group, on the second Wednesday, 7:00 p.m., at the Lubbock Boys & Girls Club, th Street. 8 Women s Ministry Bible Studies: Regular Bible study groups are open to all women. The Morning Group will meets on alternating Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. at the Angehr's home, nd Street. 9 Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing This hymn was written by Robert Robinson in He was born in 1735, in Swaffham, Norfolk, England. He died in 1790, Showell Green, Warwickshire, England. Robinson s widowed mother sent him at age 14 to London, to learn the trade of barber and hair dresser. However, his master found he enjoyed reading more than work. Converted to Christ at age 17, Robinson became a Methodist minister. He later moved to the Baptist church and pastored in Cambridge, England. He wrote a number of hymns, as well as on the subject of theology. His later life was evidently not an easy one, judging from a well known story about his hymn, Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. One day, he encountered a woman who was studying a hymnal. She asked how he liked the hymn she was humming. In tears, he replied, Madam, I am the poor unhappy man who wrote that hymn many years ago, and I would give a thousand worlds, if I had them, to enjoy the feelings I had then. The words we sing are an abridgement of the original text: Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I m fixed upon it, Mount of Thy redeeming love. Sorrowing I shall be in spirit, Till released from flesh and sin, Yet from what I do inherit, Here Thy praises I'll begin; Here I raise my Ebenezer; Here by Thy great help I ve come; And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, Interposed His precious blood; How His kindness yet pursues me Mortal tongue can never tell, Clothed in flesh, till death shall loose me I cannot proclaim it well. O to grace how great a debtor Daily I m constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here s my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above. O that day when freed from sinning, I shall see Thy lovely face; Clothed then in blood washed linen How I ll sing Thy sovereign grace; Come, my Lord, no longer tarry, Take my ransomed soul away; Send thine angels now to carry Me to realms of endless day. The tune we use for this hymn is set to an American folk tune known as Nettleton, attributed to the evangelist, Asahel Nettleton, who composed it early in the nineteenth century. 10 Sermon Notes Prayers of Meditation For Those Not Participating in Communion Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, help me to look to You as the fulfillment of all my needs, and to turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in a life of committed discipleship in Your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with Your people, and live in the fullness of Your Spirit. Amen.
