* PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP Hymn THE LORD S DAY March 7, In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song This Cornerstone, this solid Ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All, Here in the love of Christ I stand. 2. In Christ alone! - who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save 'Til on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live. 3. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious Day Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory Sin's curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ. In Christ Alone Keith Getty and Stuart Townend Thankyou Music * Congregation Standing All music copied by permission of CCLI # No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me; From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand 'Til He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I'll stand! No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand 'Til He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I'll stand! * CALL TO WORSHIP Isaiah 56:1-5 Salvation for Foreigners 1 Thus says the Lord: Keep justice, and do righteousness, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed. 2 Blessed is the man who does this, and the son of man who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath, not profaning it, and keeps his hand from doing any evil. 3 Let not the foreigner who has joined himself to the Lord say, The Lord will surely separate me from his people ; and let not the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree. 4 For thus says the Lord: To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose the things that please me and hold fast my covenant, 5 I will give in my house and within my walls a monument and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off. - Page 2 -

* HYMN Jesus, Lover of My Soul 2000 Greg Thompson. Words: Charles Wesley, Music: Greg Thompson. 1. Jesus, lover of my soul, Let me to Thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high. Hide me, O my Savior, hide, Til life s storm is past; Safe into the haven guide; Receive my soul at last. 2. Other refuge have I none, Hangs my helpless soul on Thee; Leave, oh leave me not alone, Still support and comfort me. All my trust on Thee is stayed, All help from Thee I bring; Cover my defenseless head In the shadow of Thy wing. 3. Thou, O Christ, are all I want, More than all in thee I find; Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, Heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is Thy Name, I am all unrighteousness; False and full of sin I am; Thou art full of truth and grace. 4. Plenteous grace with Thee is found, Grace to cover all my sin; Let the healing streams abound; Make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art, Let me take of Thee; Spring Thou up within my heart; For all eternity. * INVOCATION CONFESSION OF SIN Dearest heavenly Father, Our time is not our own. You have made us all to live on the face of the earth, You have determined allotted periods and the boundaries of our dwelling place that we should seek you. We confess that we do not seek you, we forget that you have made us, we forget that you sustain us, we forget that you provide for us. We glory in ourselves, as we dwell in great and good cities we did not build, in houses full of all good things we did not fill, and as we drink and eat from wells we did not dig, and from vineyards we did not plant. You give us, sons and daughters, each day our daily bread and the bread of life in your Son. In the days you allow us, let us remember that Christ has come to make alive those that are dead, and that Christ will come to judge the living and the dead. Let us seek you, O our God, while you may be found and confess our sin. Our time is not our own; you own us. In the Mediator Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON IN CHRIST - Page 4 -

RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS * HYMN 355 We are God s People Words: Bryan Jeffery Leech, Tune from: Johannes Brahms, Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, 1876; arr. By Fred Bock, OFFERING OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 52:13-53:12 He Was Wounded for Our Transgressions 52:13 Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted. 14 As many were astonished at you his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind 15 so shall he sprinkle many nations; kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which has not been told them they see, and that which they have not heard they understand. 53:1 Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. - Page 6 -

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? 9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. 11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors. - Page 7 - HYMN 1. Who is this, so weak and helpless, Child of lowly Hebrew maid, Rudely in a stable sheltered, Coldly in a manger laid? Tis the Lord of all creation, Who this wondrous path has trod; He is Lord from everlasting, And to everlasting God. 2. Who is this, a Man of Sorrows, Walking sadly life s hard way, Homeless, weary, sighing, weeping Over sin and Satan s sway? Tis our God, our glorious Savior, Who above the starry sky Is for us a place preparing, Where no tear can dim the eye. 3. Who is this? Behold him shedding Drops of blood upon the ground! Who is this, despised, rejected, Mocked, insulted, beaten, bound? Tis our God, Who gifts and graces On His church is pouring down; Who shall smite in holy vengeance All His foes beneath His throne. 4. Who is this that hangs there dying While the rude world scoffs and scorns, Numbered with the malefactors, Torn with nails, and crowned with thorns? Tis our God Who lives forever Mid the shining ones on high, In the glorious golden city, Reigning everlastingly. Who is This, So Weak and Helpless? Words by William Walsham How. Music by Chris Miner.

PRAYER OF INTERCESSION SERMON Acts 8:26-40 Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch 26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is a desert place. 27 And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, Go over and join this chariot. 30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, Do you understand what you are reading? 31 And he said, How can I, unless someone guides me? And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this: 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. Some manuscripts add all or most of verse 37: And Philip said, If you believe with all your heart, you may. And he replied, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. * HYMN 246 Man of Sorrows! What a Name Words and Music: Philip P. Bliss, Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth. 33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth. 34 And the eunuch said to Philip, About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else? 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized? 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. - Page Page 10 -

SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER We hold the elements while they are being passed, so we can partake together. *DOXOLOGY Old Hundredth - Hymn 731 Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him, all creatures here below: Praise him above, ye heav nly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost - Amen. * BENEDICTION All Scripture References from: The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV), Copyright 2001 by Crossway Bibles, A publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. Prayers of Meditation For Those Not Participating in Communion Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, help me to look to You as the fulfillment of all my needs, and to turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in a life of committed discipleship in Your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with Your people, and live in the fullness of Your Spirit. Amen. - Page Page 12 -

Church Year Calendar Third Sunday of Lent March 7-13, 2010 The theme of this third week in Lent is blinded by prejudice. In a politicized culture such as our own, a natural first association with prejudice is racial prejudice; and indeed racial prejudice is a great sin, one through which Satan has brought great sorrow to humanity. But further examination of the heart should lead us to recognize that prejudice can be any preconceived notion or mental attitude about others that keeps us from seeing them as fellow human beings and treating them as image bearers of God. Repenting and turning from prejudice does not preclude seeking justice or making moral judgments based on God's commandments, but it does mean that we are without excuse when fail to keep the second greatest commandment, to love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:18). By both command and example, Jesus extends this command even to our enemies and to show mercy as we have opportunity. Among the scriptures traditionally associated with this third week of Lent is Luke 10:25-37, where Jesus confounds the conventional expectations (and prejudice!) of many first century Jews by telling the story of the Good Samaritan. As you read this familiar passage, notice how it begins, with the question of a lawyer who is seeking to justify himself and consider in what way the story is an answer to the lawyer's question. Similarly, John 4 tells how Jesus shows mercy and indeed brings forgiveness and salvation to a woman who is an outcast, not only by Jews, but by her own people as well. Finally, James 2 warns us against showing prejudicial favoritism to those whom we consider valuable while neglecting others whom we deem of lesser value. James goes on to tell us that living faith shows itself in action. All these passages warn us that we have no right to judge the worthiness of our fellow image bearers nor to exalt ourselves over them. Rather than be blinded by prejudice, we are called to fulfill the royal law of love and show mercy where we can, to all who are made in the image of God. Bliss ( ), one of the most prolific hymn writers of his time. Some of those hymns include: I Will Sing of My Redeemer, I Love to Tell the Story, The Light of the World is Jesus, I Am So Glad that My Father in Heaven, Dare to Be a Daniel. He also wrote the music for It is Well with My Soul; that hymn was introduced to the public one month before Philip Bliss died at age 38. Mr. Bliss spent the last two and a half years of his life as a Song Evangelist and Children s Worker for Evangelist Major Whittle. He died in a tragic train wreck caused by a bridge collapse in Ashtabula, Ohio; he and his wife were traveling from Pennsylvania to Chicago. (They left their two young sons in the care of their grandmother before this trip.) He survived the initial impact, but went back into the flames in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue his wife. They were among 92 who perished in the wreck. Ira D. Sankey, an American Gospel singer, composer, and associate with D. L. Moody in evangelistic work in the U.S. and abroad as solo singer/music director, was a contemporary of Philip Bliss. Together they co-edited two hymn books, Gospel Hymns and Sacred Songs (No. 1 and No. 2). Mr. Sankey wrote the following about Man of Sorrows. Mr. Sankey wrote the following about Man of Sorrows. Written shortly before his death, this was the last hymn I heard Mr. Bliss sing. It was at a meeting in Farwell Hall in Chicago [Illinois], conducted by Henry Moorehouse. A few weeks before his death, Mr. Bliss visited the State prison at Jackson, Michigan, where, after a very touching address on The Man of Sorrows, he sang this hymn with great effect. Many of the prisoners dated their conversion from that day. When Mr. Moody and I were in Paris, holding meetings in the old church which Napoleon had granted to the Evangelicals, I frequently sang this hymn as a solo, asking the congregation to join in the single phrase, Hallelujah, what a Saviour, which they did with splendid effect. It is said that the word Hallelujah is the same in all languages. It seems as though God had prepared it for the great jubilee of heaven, when all his children shall have been gathered home to sing Hallelujah to the Lamb! - Page 20 -
