2 Pastor s Devotion Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the nations concerning which the LORD had said to the people of Israel, "You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods." Solomon clung to these in love. He had 700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father. For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and did not wholly follow the LORD, as David his father had done. Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem. And so he did for all his foreign wives, who made offerings and sacrificed to their gods. 1Kings 11:1-8 Now this November is a little different than the past few We don t begin the Advent season until December. We don t get to say Happy (Church) New Year until the 1 st Sunday of December. So guess what??? This provides us with a whole month to think about Last Things or Eschatology that part of dogmatics, or doctrinal theology. which treats of the last things in life and history: immortality, resurrection, life after death, last coming of Christ, final judgment, and end of the world. So, beginning with our celebration of All Saints Sunday, when we put out our white paraments, we then have the two green Sundays, the 12 th and 19 th (the 23 rd and 24 th Sundays after Pentecost, then the last Sunday of the Church Year (or Christ the King Sunday) which admittedly is a Roman Catholic observation, but I personally appreciate the opportunity to recognize the Lord, who we worship as The King who comes, having fulfilled His other duties as Prophet, having given us God s Word, and Priest, having finished the sacrifice of Himself as the perfect Paschal Lamb, so look forward to our ending November just as we began it with our white paraments adorning the Lectern, Pulpit and Altar. So dear ones, as we move thru this last month of the church year may we also be moved within ourselves to not become lost in other things, especially the commercial trappings with which we ll be flooded as usual this time of year, now that Halloween, I mean, Reformation Day has passed, and Thanksgiving looms just over the horizon (unless you ve been in Walmart recently and seen they already have had Christmas decorations out for several weeks), and stay focused on what s truly important Last Things as we say good-by to those who have left us to join the Church Triumphant (All Saints Sunday), and Come, Lord Jesus to He who is waiting at His Father s side to come and establish His Kingdom, which has no end Amen, and Amen!!!

3 Commentary from our sister, Doris The STRS Of Our Lives Perhaps you ve been exercising either at home or at a place specifically set up, using various types of equipment for just such a purpose. Whatever your work-out may be, you must be careful not to strain your body. Doing so just results in pain. Then, of course, there is that thing we call stress. Even if we are retired from a work-a day routine we all come up against annoying things which, when kept in our minds to fester, eventually bring stress and of a certainty stress can make a mess of our daily living. Now, I m aware that some in the medical field advise that moderate stress is a healthy thing. However, I ask: How does one control whatever brings on stress so that the line from healthy to unhealthy isn t crossed? I don t presume to know the answer-do you? Let s admit that IF that control were in our hands we could all relax with a few puffs of marijuana when the need was felt and let it go at that. Well-how does our body let it go -not without a stronger yen for a stronger drug. Well, what do we do instead? We strengthen our minds, and let the people who are part of our lives SEE how that s done. O.K. so HOW is it done? No superman or Wonder Woman involved. They are fictional-if sometimes fun. There is one sure way and only one, folks. Bet you know the answer right? The WAY, the TRUTH and the LIGHT of our lives as we give ourselves OVER to the Lord and ---HEY! What a strengthening He will give us! Our faith will become more solid more real more connected to our Lord and all He has taught us(scripture is for All-time, as you know not just for those 3 years Jesus walked and taught on earth). November issues in BEAUTIFUL times which extend from Thanksgiving to Advent to Christ s birthday. But, dear friends, so many people are straining and stressful during this time of year. Now is the time to ENCOURAGE those you meet-those you feel are stressing out over how to celebrate the way the world-without Christ in the center of it all; encourage-with compassion-the WAY. Do that and you ve planted the seed which He will water. Then-CELEBRATION will be a SPECTACULAR event. P.S. Figure out the STRS yet? STRAIN/STRESS/STRENGTHEN
