11 The Lord s Supper The Lord s Supper is one of two sacraments commanded by Christ and entrusted to his church (the other being Baptism). It portrays the gospel in a tangible way. Distributing bread (gluten free wafers) and wine pictures the broken body and shed blood of Jesus freely offered for the forgiveness of sin and the transformation of our character. Eating those elements illustrates the faith that embraces Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. What s the Lord s Supper for? Renewing our faith in God s goodness and grace. Grasping the freedom God offers to live like Jesus, reconcile conflicts and find power for service. Who is the Lord s Supper for? Members in good standing of any church that faithfully teaches the gospel, and who long for fellowship with Christ today. Children may partake in communion once they have confessed their own faith publicly before the congregation. Until then, be sure to include your children in the sacrament by reminding them what you believe and letting them accompany you to the Table. And remember that you are free to take the elements at the front of the sanctuary, where you could quietly gather your family together to ask God for his blessing. 12 Reflection & Preparation Reflection: John 17:6-12 This Week: Quote - There are other important ways in which Scripture describes the relationship between God and his people. One is the marriage figure: he is the groom, and we are the bride. But marriage is a kind of covenant in Scripture. Another figure is that of sonship: God is the Father, and we are his adopted sons and daughters. But we are sons and daughters of God because Christ is our Lord. Since we belong to the Son, we are in God s family. God has given us to his Son, and it is the Spirit of the Son in us who enables us to cry Abba, Father. (John Frame, The Doctrine of God, pg.34) Exodus 3:13-15 This is my name Hebrews 1:1-4 He has spoken to us through his Son Psalm 71:17-21 God, from my youth you have taught me 1 Corinthians 3:21-23 You are Christ s and Christ is God s Prayer: Almighty, everlasting Father, for your many gifts, make us truly thankful. Bless us to be good stewards of your Gospel, that we would not hide it away in our own hearts, but that we would freely share it with all. As your sons and daughters through the love of Christ Jesus, make us more and more like Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit which works in us for your glory and our good. Amen.
