3 A (GREEN) KNIGHT TO REMEMBER We are planning our very first A (Green) Knight to Remember Gala to be held on November 2 at La-Vera Party Center. Won t you please help us? Right now, we could really use your help in finding sponsors and procuring items for our silent auction, Chinese raffle and wine pull. We will also need help at the event with our sideboards and If you could please lend a hand, or if you would care to donate an item, please call Chris: , or the parish office: Kelly ext. 112 or Kathy ext Of course, we hope you will be able to attend and have some fun with us! Oh and we can always use empty baskets for the auction items. Please drop them off at the parish office. Thank you! CLOWN/HELPING HANDS MINISTRY Last Sunday, more than 300 parishioners attended our parish picnic. At the outdoor Mass, I saw a great celebration, and also a sense of community. After Mass, we enjoyed burgers and hot dogs prepared by the Knights of Columbus and ice cream from our Welcoming Committee. A number of people thanked me for the great work our Helping Hands ministry is doing. Some asked me about our work at Villa Serena. It all started with a gentleman who visited me. He looked very tired and had on worn clothing. He asked if we could spare some food for him, and after we gave him food and clothing, he began to cry. He explained that he lived at Villa Serena, and that he was not the only one there who was struggling. Since that day two years ago, we have had a dedicated group who make sure that these people do not go without food, clothing and other necessities. There are two special volunteers who regularly visit Villa Serena. Though they don t want their names mentioned, they deliver items to Villa Serena, pick up items from the Food Bank and organize the hot meal we serve once a month. The management at Villa Serena have expressed that the generosity of Saint Paschal Baylon and the caring volunteers have changed the attitudes of the residents, who now, truly care about each other. (That is something that the staff at Villa Serena has been trying to do for years!!) Our Catholic chaplain said when he visits patients from Villa Serena and he tells them he is from Saint Paschal, they tell him that we have special angels who make them feel so important. Our ministry continues to grow because God sees that our volunteers help others and live what God said, Whatsoever you do for the least of my brothers, that you do unto Me. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME. AL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD. P.S. The homeless are in need of slightly worn tennis shoes, sizes WHAT IS BEREAVEMENT? Someone you love very dearly has died and the pain, sadness and confusion seem too great for any words to mean anything. Even life itself can seem hollow and meaningless and yet, the Bible tells us that everything works for good for those who love God. The one who suffers this loss is the mourner who must travel through the phases of grief. Working through grief is hard work, accomplished over a period of time and made easier when shared with others. The St. Paschal/St Clare Bereavement Support Group can help. WALKING IN HOPE A BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP Each of us grieves the loss of a loved one in a different way; yet, many experiences are common to all. St. Paschal and St. Clare wish to offer support to widows and widowers, parents who have lost a child or anyone who has lost a significant person in their life. A six-week support group will be offered beginning on Tuesday, September 4, We will meet in the St. Paschal Rectory Parlor from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in a relaxed atmosphere with guest speakers, support materials and refreshments. Come join us and feel free to bring a friend or relative. This support group is open to parishioners and nonparishioners. There is no charge. For more information, contact Barbara Curran at , Corky Mondello at or the St. Paschal Rectory at

5 FROM THE PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE 21 st Week in Ordinary Time: This is the final week of our 5-week Eucharistic retreat with the Gospel of John, chapter 6. It is interesting to note that the language Jesus used to describe him, talking about giving his body and blood, real flesh to eat and drink, would split his disciples. Yet, we know the Eucharist has caused divisions over the years, with schism and divorces and many other important theological issues dividing the church into different rites. John captures it well when he says, Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. This is early foreshadowing in this Gospel passage. With the trials and tribulations of humans in the church, we get in the way of faith and religion. It s what turns many young people off today, not living authentically what we believe. Studies and surveys show that young adults believe, but do not want to be part of faith communities that are not real, authentic or challenged. Who could fault them? However, we must also recognize that we are a human community and not perfect! Rather, Jesus took his disciples, and forms them along the journey of life. Christ still does that now! How? By continuing to nourish and feed us with His Word and with His Body & Blood. Perfection is heaven; while on earth, let s work side by side helping one another grow as the Body of Christ. We need the Eucharist, Christ s body and blood, to continue to help us be Christ s body in the world today. Elsewhere in the bulletin: I have included in the bulletin a recent statement from our bishop, Nelson Perez, about the scandal in Pennsylvania. It is sad to hear this news over again and see the history of abuse. It s also important to note that since the charter to protect young people was put in place, in 2002, yes, 16 years ago, our safeguards have worked. This PA Attorney General report cites cases before I am grateful that we are now in a church of transparency, working hard each day to be a leader in protecting our young through proper screening and training of all church personnel and volunteers. A (Green) Knight to Remember! On Friday, November 2 at La-Vera Party Center, our very first A (Green) Knight to Remember special event will take place similar to a gala, without the formal attire. Based on the feedback from parents and the School Advisory Council, a team of volunteers (great disciples really!) are working hard on this special event. The name represents a few important details: It benefits our Green Knights our students and we wish for everyone to adopt one of our students, walk with them and care for them in their faith journey at SPB All proceeds go to the day-to-day operations of the school. It s a 2.1 million dollar budget tuition is most of the operating income, fundraising makes up the difference We are honoring two Green Knights who have made a significant difference to our school. This year we honor Andy Futey for his significant contribution to our parish, especially through BINGO, whereby all the proceeds went to the schools operating fund. Andy also leads our Society of Saint Matthew and Funeral Servers. He has been a major leader in the Holy Name Society too, which also, over the years, contributed mightily to our school.

6 We are also honoring Gina Pilla. Gina created our Walk-a-thon, led the Ladies Guild, ran Jingle Bell Shop and practically lived at SPB each day that her children where here for years, working tirelessly as a volunteer for event after event. We will have these two Knights to remember, and others who are currently enrolled! Won t you buy a table to honor these two folks and our students? You may also contribute to the auction items. Contact Kathy or Kelly at extension 109 or 112 in the parish office for details. Honoring Saint Joseph on Facebook: As I have mentioned over the years and especially at weekday Masses, one of our parishioners is a Josephologist and has written four books on our beloved saint. He now has a Facebook page that you may regularly find some inspiration: JOSEPH THE SON OF DAVID. Check it out and thank John Ivan (Joseph) Prcela for his devote care of our beloved Saint. Special THANKS! We had a great weekend August Between the wonderful concert in church on Friday with our own Tony Ward and musicians, and our parish picnic, we enjoy wonderful prayer, worship, community and food! Special thanks goes to Mary Jane Iacco for the reception on Friday night and to the Knights of Columbus and the Welcoming Committee for the parish picnic food. And thanks to Evamarie Mickol and the Youth Group for facilitating the children s games, George Zagar for organizing our Mass venue and to Kathy Pohlhammer for helping coordinate the picnic. There s a lot in the production of these music events (such as Mass!). I also very grateful to our music team for putting things together here (for the concert) and at HH Park (for the Mass). Back to our Academic Routine! All seems right with the world with our students back in school and our regular meeting schedule back in full swing. Let s continue to pray for one another as we build God s kingdom here at SPB, in our neighborhood and in the world: Forward in faith and hope and love! In Christ our Eucharist, Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS, Class of th Pastor SYMBOLON THE CATHOLIC FAITH EXPLAINED THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE LIFE OF GRACE: GOD S DIVINE LIFE WITHIN US We all have mental images of Jesus and God the Father, but what about the Holy Spirit? Maybe you picture a dove, or tongues of fire or rushing wind. But however, you imagine the Spirit; he s probably more mysterious than the other two persons of the Holy Trinity. Little wonder that even life-long Christians can sometimes have trouble relating and praying to the Holy Spirit. Come to the September session of Symbolon to take a closer look at who the Holy Spirit is, how the Spirit operates in our lives and in the life of the Church, and why it is absolutely essential that we come to know and love the Spirit if we are to come into full relationship with the Trinity. You may attend either session: at St Paschal on September 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Eymard Room or at St Clare on September 13 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Harvest Room. There is no registration fee, so please just come and become part of this new and exciting adult faith formation program. If you have any questions or would like further information, call Rosalie Lewis at or Barb Curran at Congratulations to Jean and Andy Futey who will celebrate their 65th Wedding Anniversary this month.

7 Statement from the Most Reverend Nelson J. Perez, Bishop of Cleveland in response to the release of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report on abuse (Cleveland, OH August 17, 2018) This week as I read and watched the recent release of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report on abuse by a number of clergy I am deeply mindful of the emotions our Catholic community is experiencing for they represent my feelings as well. I am deeply disturbed, saddened and angered. My heart goes out to those who have been so profoundly hurt. While I am well aware of all the good work that has been done locally and nationally to bring healing and justice for these horrific crimes of the past, it goes without saying that we have further work to be done and I know that my brother bishops and I, as the Bishop of Cleveland, are committed to seeing this through. This report breaks down the foundation of trust across the greater Catholic community and we all need to come together in prayer and action to build up this trust that has been shaken once again by these recent events. I encourage everyone to read the statement of Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, who has announced an urgent initiative to develop an action plan to strengthen protections against predators in the Church and anyone who would conceal them. This initiative will include the laity, experts, and the Vatican. I reiterate the words of my brother bishops shared earlier this week, We are profoundly saddened each time we hear about the harm caused as a result of abuse, at the hands of a clergyman of any rank. I ask that the entire Diocese of Cleveland to pray for all the survivors of sexual and all types of abuse and for the guidance of Christ through the healing process. STEWARDSHIP We are a stewardship parish: we recognize that as God s stewards, we cannot help but give thanks to God for our many blessings and gifts. We demonstrate this by sharing our time, talent and treasure to build up God s reign. We do this because there are a lot of joys and blessings, expenses and duties for living and running a parish family. Collections for August 18 and 19: $18, nd Collection for the Faith and Values: $1, st of the Month Second Collection: Each month you help us with our loans and erasing our debt.
