Those early Pilgrims were thankful for what had happened to them, and we should be thankful, too. We should just be thankful for being together. 4 FROM THE DESK OF THE PAROCHIAL VICAR NATIVITY SCENE ADDITIONS For many people Christmas is their favorite time of the year. Decorating the tree, exchanging gifts, all the festive music and food, being with family and friends, Christmas, indeed, is a wonderful season. One thing I always enjoyed about Christmas as a child was coming to church and seeing the sanctuary transformed into a beautiful nativity scene with Jesus, Mary and Joseph surrounded shepherds, magi and angels. It was always a beautiful and joyous moment. Over the last couple of years through the great generosity of parishioners and donors we have acquired a spectacular new nativity set. Each large scale, delicately painted Fontanini piece helps evoke that amazing moment in history when our savior Jesus was born. Each Christmas we have been able to add a new piece to this lovely set. This year we would like to purchase an Angel. We have received most of the funds for this. We would greatly appreciate any financial contribution to help enhance our Christmas display with additional pieces. Thank you for your generosity and Merry Christmas! ADVENT DECORATIONS This year our decorations for Advent are very scripturally based. Throughout the centuries church art and architecture have often been used to draw people deeper into scripture with scripturally based paintings, sculptures and stained-glass windows. This year our Art and Environment Committee has chosen the Advent season to help make these deeper connections. Our Advent candles have been designed to show images drawn for the Sunday readings of Advent. The banners in our sanctuary display a tradition known as the Jesse Tree. This Advent tradition draws from Isaiah 11:1 a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The story it conveys is the unfolding of salvation history from Genesis to the birth of Jesus. Each week two new banners will be displayed in the sanctuary. The images upon the banners will depict a tree s branches spreading across the windows. Hanging upon these branches will be symbols taken from scripture. The symbols of the first week concentrate upon the book of Genesis. In the weeks to come we ll have images taken from Exodus, the prophets, and the gospels, all leading up to Jesus. Each week s bulletin will have explanations of the symbols for the week. We hope this artwork helps enrich your pray life and enhance your experience of Advent. Have a joyous Advent! Rev. John Christman, SSS CLOWN/HELPING HANDS MINISTRY I pray that you all had a GREAT THANKSGIVING AND I THANK GOD for all of you who made the needy and homeless feel the blessings of Thanksgiving, also. We especially want to thank Wadi Ina, owner of Manhattan Deli, who donated over 200 Thanksgiving meals with all the trimmings. Our Superior General from Rome, Fr. Eugenio Martins, was here visiting and was very impressed with the way our Helping Hands Ministry reaches out to so many, saying You are a parish of Eucharistic Charisma and walk in the steps of Fr. Eymard. This is a great reflection on our parish. We must remember to carry on in this ministry in the name of God. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME. ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD.

5 FROM THE PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE Due to the November timetable for publication, this column and other inserts created November 13. First Sunday of Advent: Happy New Liturgical Year! We now circle back to Year A with our Cycle of Sunday readings and hear the Gospel from Matthew. This Gospel is nicknamed the great teacher Gospel, for Matthew presents Jesus in this vein. As with other weeks in November, the First Sunday of Advent presents a picture of great natural tragedies but yet our resolve to remain faithful, stay awake and always be prepared. We are able to be prepared due to the great foundation of faith. No matter what storms come our way, with Christ by our side, we herald that nothing will take us down. No darkness will overcome the light of our faith. I wish you many blessings and much resolve as you begin a new faith year, a year of grace and hope! Things to Do for Advent & New Year s Resolutions: We are blessed to provide many opportunities to deepen our faith life, through prayer, worship and service. As with the civic calendar New Year, we make resolutions and try to improve our life in a few ways. One of the pieces of our Pastoral Plan (almost here at the end of year 2) was to share with you the many ways you may participate in the actives of our parish from prayer to service. May I suggestion a few? Liturgy of the Hours Morning 8 a.m. or Evening 4:45 p.m. Join with the Blessed Sacrament Community in the prayer of the church. While just 20 minutes, it is an important witness and opportunity for us to begin and continue our day on the way to and from work or as you pass by doing errands or dropping off students on the way to school. Daily Mass We are blessed to offer, on three weekdays, 3 Masses! The rhythm of scripture and Eucharist will assist your day in ways you may not image for yourself. Community at Prayer Praying in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament - Since March 19, 1994, we have had regular bands or hours of prayer devoted to being present with the Real Presence, in vigil, waiting for the LORD S return. It is an opportunity for you to meditate, have silence, listen and grow in this special relationship we have with Christ. Even if you wish to come in the middle of the night, I ll give you the code to come into the chapel to spend that time in contemplation and communion with Christ and the rest of the Body of Christ in prayer. Taizé Prayer We have two special holy hours scheduled during Advent. Again, as part of our Pastoral Plan, we were challenged to provide and attend to these special holy hours to deepen our communion with one another. This Wednesday, November 30 and Monday, December 19 we will have opportunities to pray in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Taizé style. Advent Retreats We are hosting one night here, Monday, December 5 with Sr. Melannie Svoboda, SND at 7:00 p.m. in church. You deserve a night out!

6 Confession Besides Saturdays, one is able to make an appointment, stop by the parish office or attend the communal celebrations listed in the parish calendar. We all need that conversation with someone, especially with the priest, to help us see and hear that we are forgiven by God for our sins when we ask for this reconciliation. Take time for one or more of these opportunities to start the new year off right for you! Looking forward to Mission Trip at Easter: Currently we have 15 youth and adults preparing to go to Saint Michael Indian School in Arizona. We are looking forward to our partnership with this Native American community. Our Youth Minister, Evamarie, will have more in her column elsewhere in the bulletin. We are hoping to bring them a gift or two from our church to meet the needs that they have, such as a monstrance and hymnbooks. We look forward to building up one another s faith through the sharing of the Life in the Eucharist Seminar, the charism of Saint Peter Julian Eymard. This school was founded by Saint Katherine Drexel, the American saint of the Eucharist, founding schools for Native Americans and African-Americans in poor regions of our nation. Saint Michael provides an incredible place of hope and we are so happy to be in this partnership. Pray for us as we plan our journey for I look forward to accompanying the group too, sharing the rich history of the first fruits of Catholic faith in this region of the country, dating back to the 1530 s. Blessings and prayers to you this Advent Time! As Christians, we are "counter cultural" for a reason, witnessing our faith and Gospel values every day! Thank you for sharing in this purpose as we build the Body of Christ and bring hope to our world. Let us continue to pray for each other! Each year we request your support in making up the tuition gap between what we ask of parents to pay for tuition and the actual costs of an education for a student. These gaps occur due to our tuition discounts to families with multiple children. GIFTS which stands for Giving Is Fundamental to Success also assistance families who have a financial need or crisis. This was a commitment made by the Finance Council to place 40% of the funds raised from this appeal toward financial assistance. Last year we assisted 20 families with a grant from this fund. For the school year, tuition is $4,125, while the actual cost of educating each student is $5,610. This means as a parish, we subsidize $1,485 for each student s education.
