6 FROM THE PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE This bulletin column was written on May 15. The Body & Blood of Christ: In 1969 when the church combined the holidays of Corpus Christi and the Precious Blood into one festival the idea was to completely focus on the Real Presence of Christ in the body & blood. For too long, the church segregated or separated the reality of this mystery. With the promulgation of the revised Eucharistic theology after the Second Vatican Council, the entire mystery of the Eucharist was proclaimed and how communion was to be received by the faithful. It is sad that in some parts of the world, for economic reasons and other practices, that not everyone is able to receive both elements or species of Holy Communion. The other important reason for today s solemnity is to make a connection with our Eucharist and living the Eucharist in the world. That was a big spiritual and social change we went from a more Protestant view of the Eucharist that this is my Jesus and me time, to I have to live Jesus and care for Jesus in the world. The social outreach side to being Eucharist became more fully alive and present. The real presence was not just here in the church but the Real Presence of Christ was and is in every person I encounter. These encounters are moments of grace and sacramental moments of love and care. Jesus Christ gave us the first example of loving by giving an example to his disciples and therefore to us. We continue this mystery in living it for the world today being Christ s body & blood in the world that hungers for this love. Fulfilling a Goal and Dream: As I look forward to our 8 th year together - yes, time flies when you are having fun at SPB could we work on a special goal together? I ll never forget my second grade catechist, Sr. Monica, saying how important it was to receive Holy Communion and sing because we are so happy to receive Jesus, we cannot help but sing. Fr. Jette loved the song, How Can I Keep From Singing? because of the same reasons and the delightful text. I have asked our parish pastoral musicians, like Cardinal Mahoney of Los Angeles wrote in his pastoral letter, to have our 8 favorite communion hymns sung during this coming year so that we will become comfortable again in singing during the Communion Rite. This is a way for us to get back in the habit of singing during Communion a good habit! Just as we sing together Happy Birthday or The National Anthem to show unity, sportsmanship or our common belief or cause, so shouldn t we at the most important part of the Mass? We give back to God the voice he gave us. The instructions of the Mass tell us to do this, so let s start practicing this together again by picking up a hymn book or song sheet and singing the song that is announced... We all have our worries, concerns, joys and sorrows we bring to Mass and our reception of the Body and Blood of Christ. Our Amen says, yes to this reality, to the reality that WE are the Body and Blood of Christ and our song unifies us together in this special ritual moment. Thanks for helping this dream become reality in the coming year. Spring Fling! Thank you for joining us for our 7 th annual parish festival. We were blessed to have so many people come from northeast Ohio and northwest PA to join with us during this special weekend. We were also honored to have Deacon Joe s family for the formal blessing of the Bourgeois Bells. Being the first parish festival in the area gets everyone into the mood of being outside, visiting friends and neighbors, having some fun food and listening to great music and dancing! Every year our event gets bigger and better and our team grows and develops

7 great fun for us. I thank Bob Mastrangelo for his leadership of our committee and being chair. From our staff, Kathy Pohlhammer has worked tirelessly, especially on the flyer and publicity that I know many people have enjoyed seeing this year. Our Advancement Director, Barb DiTurno, was instrumental in expanding our sponsorship this year. We are so grateful to the doubling of sponsors this year please patronize our sponsors and tell them often how grateful you are for their care of our parish. I also give a shout out to the rest of the committee for their hard work and dedication: Don LoPresti, Bob Horvath, Greg Sutyak, Jim Bartel, John Margevicius, Kris Martinson, Mike Majernik, Diana Mitchell, The DiLillo Family, The Reichert Family and Teri Drda. We appreciate that Athletic Association, PTO, Ladies Guild, the Welcome Committee, Holy Name Society, SPB Credit Union, Helping Hands, Parish Council, Parish Finance Council, SPB Day School, SPB PSR and the Eymard Spiritual Group are as involved as they are too. I hope I have covered everyone but if not, I apologize. Taste of the Town: Our next parish festival, specifically for the school, is Taste of the Town. Won t you join with us on the committee to organize this important annual event? Help us recruit your favorite restaurant, find wonderful auction items, plan the menus and beverages, decorate our special Father O Brien Hall and every other detail in between. We will have a short organizational meeting, Tuesday (this May 31) at 8 a.m. in the Arkins Room. This time was chosen to help people get to their jobs! Let us continue to pray for each other! Blessings to you this Memorial Day weekend as we recall those who died in service to our country. 8 CLOWN/HELPING HANDS MINISTRY No words can express how much your presence at the blessing of the church bells in memory of my great brother Fr Louis Bourgeois meant to me. The love you showed for me and my family is that same kind of love my brother reached out to so many in his life as a very dedicated priest. The Bishop at my brother s funeral called my brother a priest s priest. It was one of the largest funerals ever seen for a priest who never made the headlines, but a priest for every class of people. My brother s love continues in our hearts and the ringing of bells remind us of him and the church, but most importantly, the love of God, because my brother was famous for saying God is Good all the Time. All the time God is good. I received a letter from a Protestant lady saying she heard these new bells of St. Paschal and just wanted to thank us because every time she hears the bells she thinks of God and is thankful to God for His love. My brother s love for God and his people continues in the joyous ringing of our church bells. The blessing of our church bells is a joyous and happy day for all of us. Bells have a special place in the life of God s people as they mark the hours of prayer and call us to the celebration of Mass. Bells alert us of important events, both happy and sad in the life of the church and community. Let us then participate devoutly in the celebrations whenever we hear the ringing of bells. We will remember that we are one family, coming together to show our unity in Christ. A very special thank you to all those who made my family feel so welcome and loved. God Bless you. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME. ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD. PSR AND OTHER NEWS FROM THE PEKO S PSR REGISTRATION: Registration is now underway for the PSR school year. 9 EDUCATION As we come to the close of our 60th year, we wish to celebrate one final Green Knight of the Quarter. Sam Dornback is the epitome of courtesy and reverence! I have been impressed with the way Sam is always mindful of those around him. He goes out of his way to pleasantly greet teachers as well as fellow students daily. He has a kind demeanor and a congenial way of engaging with others. Most impressive to me, however, is his knowledge of his faith and his ability to put his faith into practice! It is a delight to interact with Sam in my homeroom and in the classes I have with him! It s a joy to know and teach Sam! Those words are from Mrs. Mary Connors who nominated seventh grader, Sam Dornback, as our final Green Knight of the year. The entire junior high team had a hand in the nomination describing Sam as a true young gentleman, a terrific example to younger students and peers, and an outstanding student. Sam is involved in many activities. He enjoys sports, particularly basketball. When I asked him if the Cavaliers were his favorite team he said yes, but quickly added that they were his favorite next to his SPB team! Sam is very involved at St. Paul s Episcopal Church where he is an acolyte. He enjoys history and has traveled with his parents to many places important to our history. Sam s first choice for high school is Saint Ignatius because he believes that it is the place to be with its unique urban campus. His mom, Julie, told me that since Sam was little, he has felt compassion toward our larger global community. He believes in social justice and acts accordingly. Dad, David, believes that Sam has been blessed at Saint Paschal School with incredible coaches and staff who have shown him how to be a member of a team. The family s belief that one should not just show up, but should get involved has rubbed off on Sam! It is obvious that Sam exemplifies and lives out the values of courage, civility, character, and compassion centered on Christ. Congratulations, Sam! Here are some great things happening this week: There is no school on Monday, May 30 as we celebrate Memorial Day. Invited Green Knights of the Quarter and their families will join the faculty for our Green Knight Breakfast at 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31 in the Eymard Room. The 2016 Kindergarten Class will graduate on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. in O Brien Hall. Field Day is Wednesday, June 1. The Class of 2016 graduates on Thursday, June 2 at 7:00 p.m. in church. A reception given by the 7th grade parents follows in the Eymard Room. Our year ends on Friday, June 3 with Pass It On Mass at 9:00 a.m. Following Mass will be our Field Day Awards assembly. Dismissal is at 11:30 a.m. God bless, Carol L. Jansky, Principal PARISH ACTIVITIES SAINT PASCHAL TRAVELERS BUS TRIP Come join us on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 as we travel to Hollywood Casino, Toledo, Ohio. There is no cost to you if you are already shopping at Heinen. They have done this for SPB PTO since MISSION APPEAL My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, it is through our living witness to our faith that the Good News of God s Love is spread to the ends of the earth. THIS IS THE MISSION OF EVERY CATHOLIC a mission entrusted to us by Jesus Himself as proof that He is alive... and that His Holy Spirit lives in US!!!! In order to help us to live up to this Missionary call, our Diocese invites Missionaries from around the world to come to each parish once a year to share their stories with us. This year, Sister Lisa Valentini, MSC, of the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, from Reading, Pennsylvania is looking forward to visiting with us here at St Paschal Baylon on the weekend of June 11 th and 12 th, to share with us about the Missionary work of the her Sisters. Sister Lisa is a Missionary herself and has served in Perú, Mexico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic and she is really looking forward to meeting our parishioners! There are two ways of being Missionary: One is to GIVE by GOING which is what Sister Lisa and her Sisters do...the other is to GO by GIVING... The Mission Appeal gives us the opportunity to GIVE so that we can be a part of the Missionary work of the MSC Sisters around the world. Let us be as generous as possible in the 2 nd Collection for this Mission Appeal knowing that the Lord promises a hundredfold in return. CREDIT UNION NEWS A consolidation loan can make credit card payments and other bills much easier to manage. An unsecured loan with rates as low as 9.00% APR up to $10,000 may be the answer. Call the credit union for a loan application at (440) or at SPBCU@SBCGLOBAL.NET. Note: The credit union will be closed on Sunday May 29, BABY BOTTLES FOR BIRTHRIGHT Our parish is sponsoring a fundraiser for Birthright, a pregnancy crisis and counseling center with three offices in greater Cleveland. It is totally volunteer driven with all monies raised going to help moms and their new babies and to keep the offices open. Last year your generous contributions totaled $1,922! The baby bottle campaign began on Mother's Day weekend and will conclude on Father's Day weekend, June 18th and 19 th. We are hoping everyone who took a baby bottle home will bring it home and fill it with spare CHANGE (cash or a check made out to Birthright also accepted) to help make a CHANGE in a young woman's life.
