5 FROM FATHER LANE, SSS, OUR 8 TH PASTOR: 28 th Sunday in Ordinary Time: As we continue Respect Life Month and hear our readings today, I am reminded of several popes over the centuries who have advocated for a more just society. For some this is not a popular piece to discuss and is often misunderstood. As Christians, the basis of this teaching comes from the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 4, verse 32: sharing with one another and giving benefits to all. However, with today s Gospel from Mark reminds us that too much wealth makes it difficult to pass through the eye of a needle. Wealth is meant to build up God s kingdom and the Body of Christ. We are stewards of God s many gifts, ours for a while until we return to God (in a natural death). God makes all things possible if we make all possible for God. This is why the church, especially here in the United States, has advocated for certain benefits (i.e. health care as a right for all human beings). To offer another piece to this complex puzzle, we have seen that insurance works best when everyone is part and sharing the resources and benefits. I am only scratching the surface, but it s a helpful reminder from our readings this Sunday as we promote life through basic human means of care for all, so that all children, youth, adults and elders may grow in a system that cares for basic human necessities. Canonization in Rome Today: Two of my favorite Catholic heroes have been Pope Paul VI and Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador, El Salvador. Perhaps it s because Pope Paul VI was the pope of my childhood and I accomplished reading the largest, longest and best biography (- a fascinating book by the British priest Peter Hebblethwaite). Perhaps for Archbishop Romero, it was our Cleveland Diocese connection with the missions in El Salvador, and his martyrdom, as well as the other 4 women, two being from the Diocese of Cleveland - Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel and lay missioner Jeanne Donovan. (Their pictures are in our Kazel Meeting Room and parish office parlor.) For whatever reason, it s great that the church is honoring these two saints today for their tireless dedication to the People of God through the twists and turns in their lives. I encourage you to take a moment this week to review their lives and journeys. We all have something in common and something to learn as we grow in faith. Our Parish Policies and Ways We Protect Our Children: The School Advisory Council requested I write a letter to share the ways we provide a safe environment for our people, but especially our children. This letter is posted on our website now, in the pastoral letters section as a way to update you on timely matters that are more than the bulletin space may handle. It s good to note all that we do as a parish to create a place for the protection of children and the policies that we join with our diocese and others across the United States church, with our bishops, to insure fulfillment of the 2002 Dallas Charter to Protect our Children. Next Week Begins Our SSS Chapter: Sunday, October 21 begins our quadannual chapter, hearing reports of our religious life from financial to health matters, vocation ministry and everything in between. Our SSS members from our six communities across the country will also be gathering to elect new leadership for the next four years. Please pray for us while we gather at a retreat center in the Diocese of Saint Petersburg. While away, I know

6 you ll be hospitable to the visiting priests, listed in the calendar section of the bulletin. May I remind you of the following? Join in the recitation of the Rosary, weekdays at 7:30 a.m. we recite one decade; at 8:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday, we recite an entire rosary. Trunk or Treat is October 28 at 3:00 p.m. Please sign up for A (Green K)night to Remember, for Friday, November 2, 6:30 p.m. at La-Vera Party Center. ALL proceeds go to the operations of our award-winning school. Fundraising is a natural part of any Catholic school, helping to keep it strong and financially sound, maintaining a reasonable tuition. Let s continue to pray for each other and the joy of serving in our parish s life! In Christ our Eucharist, Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS, Class of 1979 (40 th Reunion Saturday, May 18) P.S. Want to join a parish pilgrimage to Italy, September 12 24, 2019 and tour the highlights of Milan, Turin, Ravenna, Florence, Siena, Assisi & Rome? Let me know! We are working on pricing and reservations as we type this bulletin. (Due to the holiday, this bulletin was typed on October 4.) OUR WEEKLY STEWARDSHIP REPORT We are a stewardship parish: we recognize that as God s stewards, we cannot help but give thanks to God for our many blessings and gifts. We demonstrate this by sharing our time, talent and treasure to build up God s reign. We do this because there are a lot of joys and blessings, expenses and duties for living and running a parish family. September MyEoffering $12, We are $24,000 already behind in this fiscal year.
