ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL Once a year, Archbishop Myers asks each of us to make a sacrificial commitment to e Church of Newark so we will have e necessary resources to fu, for an entire year, e offices which provide direct services to parishes, including ours. In addition, a ho of oer programs a Human Services are provided which NO single parish could provide on its own. Our parish a e Archdiocese are ONE. Bo need your sacrificial support. We are asking EACH FAMILY to a make a financial commitment to our AAA. Those donors who share a portion of what ey have, are e fir ones to benefit from eir own sense of gratitude of God. Envelopes can be fou in back of church.
2 From e Paor March 11, rd Suay of Lent Jesus made a whip out of cords a drove em out of e temple area, saying, Stop making my Faer s house a marketplace. Then Jesus answered em a said, Deroy is temple a in ree days I will raise it up. [See John 2_13-25] To help open e treasures of e revised Roman Missal, each week I m giving a reflection on e ree Mass orations of at day, gleamed from e book Essential Presidential Prayers a Texts. I m truly amazed at e eological dep a beauty of ese prayers; I hope you are, too! 3 rd Suay of Lent Collect O God, auor of every mercy a of all goodness, who in faing, prayer a almsgiving have shown us a remedy for sin, look graciously on is confession of our lowliness, at we, who are bowed down by our conscience, may always be lifted up by your mercy. Lowliness. When we speak of e lowliness of e Blessed Virgin Mary we inte no insult; on e contrary, it highlights one of her greate assets! For by humbly taking God at His word, a accepting e divine will a plan, Mary became a channel of Chri s presence in ways we cannot even imagine! Yet is Collect, which comes near e midpoint of Lent, when we ve probably become discouraged by our failure to attain e goals of our Fai, remis us: DON T GIVE UP! For God has auored or created a plan by which we can participate in but not earn His forgiveness a mercy! We have e reefold remedy for sin: prayer, faing a almsgiving, which God will never reject from us, a which will always work for us, no matter how many times we need em! For unlike oer medicines a procedures, God will never reject em, nor will we ever develop a resiance to em! For God s cure for whatever ails our soul: prayer, faing a almsgiving ALWAYS work! 3 rd Suay of Lent Prayer over e Offerings Be pleased, O Lord, wi ese sacrificial offerings, a grant at we who beseech pardon for our own sins, may take care to forgive our neighbor. Let s Make a Deal. In e Prayer over e Offerings, as in e Lord s Prayer, we make a deal wi God; we tell God to forgive us as we forgive oers; to use e measure wi which we measure oers to measure us. But how can God be pleased wi [our sacrificial offerings? It is only possible if we offer em in union wi Chri s ultimate self-sacrifice upon e Cross for e world s salvation! By uniting all we are a do a all we offer wi Chri s total gift of Himself, God can be a will be pleased wi our offerings - which brings us full circle. For having accepted our offerings, God now waits for us to fulfill e exchange, by forgiving as we have been forgiven! As a loving parent, God knows we cannot give what we have not fir received; nor are we likely to become what has not fir been identified, praised a celebrated in us. So God fir shows us mercy a forgiveness; en God praises us for being merciful a forgiving; en God rejoices as we share ese divine gifts wi oers! 3 rd Suay of Lent - Prayer after Communion As we receive e pledge of ings yet hidden in heaven a are nourished while ill on ear wi e Bread at comes from on high, we humbly entreat you, O Lord, at what is being brought about in us in myery may come to true completion. A Pledge. A pledge is a super-duper promise, akin to a vow. That God pledged so much to us is unbelievable; at God has already fulfilled at pledge by seing us Jesus, who suffered a died a rose again for our salvation a by seing us His Holy Spirit to empower a direct us - is truly miboggling! But as if all is is not enough, God also gives us His Son s Body a Blood to nourish a suain us. So as we ruggle to live in is interim time of confusion a change, of setbacks a sin, a of dying a dea, we have e Sacraments, especially e Euchari, to grace us wi all we need to keep on going until we reach our goal! However, it is ill ju a pledge so we mu be patient a accepting of e fact at we are NOT THERE YET! So never lose hope; never give up; never doubt for what God has promised WILL come to true completion someday! Wi God s love a my prayers, Revere Michael J. Kreder
