3 OUR PARISH A good tree bears good fruit In today s Gospel Jesus says that a good tree produces good fruit and a bad tree produces rotten fruit; that is, a good person produces good fruits and a bad person produces bad fruit. Those who live by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and are open to His Grace, live in kindness and love towards others. They do not judge others. They recognize their own weaknesses and sins before they judge others. And when they perceive the wrong in others they try to help them and not gossip and try to destroy others. We live by Jesus way of kindness and compassion towards all. Palms for Ash Wednesday Once again we will be burning palms from the prior year's Palm Sunday for our ashes on Ash Wednesday. Could you please bring in your palms to Mass and drop them in the baskets at the church doors. We will burn these palms on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 for our ashes. Thank you. ~Deacon Michael Christian Meditation Group In an age of rush and noise, it is essential that we find time to be still and quiet. Be still and know that I am God, says the Psalmist. In this prayer of silence called Christian Meditation we find God who dwells in our own heart. And, in finding Him, we find our own selves and thus, are renewed. A Christian Mediation Group regularly meets Mondays at 4:00pm in the Chapel. Please call Fran at to learn more about this program. 5 T Preparing Before Lent Begins aking some time to get ready for Lent will ensure that we aren't going to miss the first week or two of Lent, because we are just getting started. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, but we want to be ready to really take off on that day, rather than just beginning to think about Lent on that day. Part of what makes a vacation or a special anniversary so special is the build-up to it. Before we get to Ash Wednesday, we should start asking ourselves some questions and we should start with some preparations. "What does God want to give me this year?" This question may require that I slow down a bit and listen to my inner spirit. For example, even if I'm very busy, I realize I'm hungry when I hear my stomach start "growling." "What am I going to be doing on Ash Wednesday?" Too often, Ash Wednesday is like every other day, except that I manage to get to church and get ashes on my forehead. Is there anything else I can do on Ash Wednesday? How will fasting and abstaining happen for me, for my family on that special day? It doesn't take a lot of time to prepare for the beginning of Lent. It just takes desire and focus. God can do so much with that. We can give God more of a space to touch our hearts if we begin to establish some simple patterns. We could wake up each morning, and, for something like a half a minute to a minute, stand by the edge of our beds and just ask the Lord for the grace to let this day be one in which I long for the beginning of Lent. Perhaps we need to ask for specific helps or graces to get ready to begin Lent. Whatever we try to say, our Lord can understand the Spirit trying to speak through our simple words. And all it takes is the time to find and put on our slippers. And each night, in the days ahead, we can practice giving thanks to God before I go to bed. This simple pattern, in the morning and evening can stir our spirits to look forward to and prepare for Lent, as a season of grace. May our Lord bless us all on this journey ahead. -Taken from Creighton University's Online Ministries web site: Used with Permission. LIVING THE WORD Every Thursday 7:00 pm St. Paul s Room LENT The penitential season of Lent, six Sundays and forty weekdays, prepares for the high feast of Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (March 6 th ) and ends with the beginning of the Mass of the Lord s Supper in the evening of Holy Thursday (April 18 th ). The word Lent is from the Anglo- Saxon lencten (spring). Lenctentid (springtide) was the Saxon name for March because March is the month in which days begin to lengthen (also a root of lent ). We are called to reflect on the Paschal Mystery in a particularly focused way. Lent is a time of spiritual renewal. The Church calls everyone, therefore, to a spirit of penance through the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The Diocese reminds us in their annual Lenten regulations letter that all persons 14 years of age and older are asked to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. Fasting (one main meal with a couple of smaller meals) is asked of everyone from the ages of on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The rule of fasting, however, is waived if your health would be seriously affected by it. We are also encouraged to attend reconciliation at some point during the season. Our parish reconciliation service will be on Thursday, April 11 th, at 7:00pm with a half hour of meditational music beforehand. May we all have a prayerful Lent to lead us to the joys of Easter! Questions of the Week Theme: Our words reveal what is in our hearts. Breaking Open the Word Suggested text for faith sharing: Today s Gospel Reading from Luke Step One: Listen to the Word Which line in this reading caught your ear? What sense do you get about God as you listen to this Word proclaimed today? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: Jesus teaches us to do good. What did you do this past week that was really good, kind or loving? Question for Youth: Jesus says that our words reveal what is in our hearts. How do your words and actions reveal what is truly in your heart? Question for Adults: We humans are vulnerable to sin. But we see the sins of others more easily than we recognize our own sins. Why does Jesus warn us not to judge others?

7 STEWARDSHIP OFFERING Week of February 24 Thank you for your generosity! Weekend Offertory: $ 7, Electronic Giving: $ Total: $ 7, Average Weekly Budget Amount: $12, Today's gospel speaks to the importance of discipleship and training. We are called to be "like the teacher," which means living a life of mercy, generosity, and compassion. Jesus tells us not to worry about the splinter in our neighbor's eye, and to work on removing the wooden beam from our own eye. We cannot disciple well when we are spiritually blinded -- a blind guide is a false guide who will lead others into a pit. If we are to be authentic in our discipleship, we must regain our sight, but how? We can pray, go to Mass, study scripture, make a good confession, and recall our baptismal promises. Jesus the teacher wants us to be star pupils! He wants us to help one another! But first, he wants us to recognize our own struggles before we condemn others for theirs. Today we come together as Catholics through the Annual Catholic Appeal We may not all be social workers, yet through the Annual Catholic Appeal, we can all support the Catholic charitable programs and parish ministries that help lift our neighbors and friends out of poverty. The Annual Catholic Appeal is dedicated solely to the social mission of the Church here in Northern California. Please be as generous as you can. Every gift makes a profound difference in someone s life. Hospitality Committee OLA s Hospitality Committee volunteers provide fellowship and support to all members of our Parish Community. We are greeters at the Masses, we welcome new parishioners and we constantly search for new ideas to make our OLA community a welcoming and caring place. We are in need of additional volunteers at this time to join our group. If you are interested in fellowship and helping to give back to the Parish Community, please contact Nancy Arndorfer at nancy@arndorfer.com ( ) or Leo Winternitz at lwintern@comcast.net ( ). Please bookmark our link, located at smile.amazon.com/ch/ and support us every time you shop at no additional cost to you. Thank you! Estate Planning A legacy gift to Our Lady of the Assumption is one of the most rewarding and farreaching investments you can make. Our Lady of the Assumption takes the trust you place in us seriously. We are grateful to those who have included us in their plan for the distribution of their assets after death. We pray that you will keep Our Lady of the Assumption Parish and/or School in mind. We invite you to contact the Parish Office if you wish to learn more about how you can include us in your estate planning. Bulletin Preparation We are looking for an industrious person who can help with bulletin preparation! Our bulletin is designed through Publisher, so a working knowledge of Publisher would be good. You would work in conjunction with another person who takes care of the calendar and Masses and with our secretary, Shannon Langer. Please call or Shannon for further information. Shannon can be reached at ext. 223 or ministrycoordinator@olaparish.net. The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had (Sir 27:6)
