If you are unable to make the entire Novena, please come as many nights as you can. All intentions remain on the altar throughout the Novena. Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Vocations If we really believe in something, it does not seem to be a sacrifice to give up everything else to pursue that one dream. Jesus asks the same as any great leader total dedication; but He promises rewards no one else can promise, You will then have treasure in Heaven. 3 Collections for September 29 & 30, 2018 total $7,592.24! Thank you very much! We are now collecting food items for our Thanksgiving Baskets, and will also be accepting monetary donations for turkeys. Your donations help to provide baskets for our parishioners and families within our zip code area who are in need. Your kindness is very much appreciated. To keep the baskets more consistent, we ask that you only bring in the foods listed below. Foods other than those listed will go to the Open Panty. Please leave donations in the sacristy by the exit doors. Asking for donations by last name will enable a more fair and even distribution of food. Because we are asking for all fresh potatoes this year, please do not purchase them before November 14 th (one week prior to Thanksgiving). Monetary donations can be checks made out to Holy Name or cash, and can be brought or mailed to the rectory, or for convenience, put into the collection basket in a plain envelope marked Turkey Donation. Sr. Melinda continues seeking DONATIONS of individually wrapped butterscotch or peppermint candies, Tootsie rolls, lollipops, granola, and packs of peanut butter crackers for the candy bags that our parish is providing to Holy Cross to enhance their Sandwich Ministry for the homeless. Any of these items that you can provide is warmly appreciated! SERVICE Funeral Altar Servers We are looking for a few adults who would be willing to serve as altar servers for funerals. Training is included. We already have several servers, but a few more will make the job easier for all. If you re interested or would like more information, please contact Fr. Joyce at Page 4

4 Altar Servers Forms are available at the doors of the church and at religious education classes for young people who have already made their First Holy Communion and would like to be altar servers to serve at our weekend Masses. If you re interested or would like more information, please contact Fr. Joyce at , ext Concerning Hospital Visits If someone in your family is in the hospital and you want to have Fr. David, Fr. Joyce or Sister Melinda visit, please call the rectory at and leave a message for either father or Sr. Melinda, (ext. 130). Unfortunately, a parishioner s name is not always on the daily list of Holy Name patients; so we ask that you give us a call with the information (name, which building, room #, etc.). This way you or your loved one will be assured of a visit. EDUCATION Religious Education classes meet in the Dickinson Street School following the 10:30a.m. Mass. Confirmation class meets in the church Sunday evening at 5:00p.m. Parish Council Meeting Minutes September 10, 2018 Pastor Report Fr. Dave: Fr Dave is settling in and happy to be at Holy Name. He is excited at the possibility of having Matthew Kelly of Dynamic Catholic coming to Springfield to make a presentation. Boilers at the Social Center need work and there is a sprinkler issue at the church. Pastoral Minister Report Sr. Melinda: In preparation for Final Vows, God willing, in the fall of 2019, Sister Melinda is reducing her work schedule to 20 hours a week: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. She will continue to visit hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities and she will continue to work with people in recovery. Once a month she will be assisting CCD. And she will continue Communion calls on the last Sunday of each month. Holy Name is looking for someone to give Communion on Sunday s to a parishioner who lives on Spruceland Street. The medals needed for blessing of the athletes are available. We have the Memorial Mass Remembrance, and the candles ordered and ready to go. Advent, Lenten booklets for 2018 and 2019 have arrived. 2018/2019 Advent and Lent reflection groups will still meet. Sr. Melinda is collecting cookies, crackers, wrapped candy of any kind to fill bags for the homeless. There is a box located in the church for the collection. Please no large bags of unwrapped candy or chips. Holy Name CCD, Confirmation Classes, or any family who would like to volunteer to fill 150 baggies, contact Sr. Melinda. This could be a family project to do at home! Spanish Mission Report Blanca Davila: On September 9 th the Hispanic Community gave a warm welcome to Fr. Dave. The community prepared him typical food from their respective countries and sang songs. Fr. Dave warmly provided words of encouragement and described what he viewed as his mission as a priest. The community prayed with Fr. Dave. It was a happy moment unity that was felt by all. New Business - Craft Fair (Christmas Bazaar) is back on! Tentative date is November 17 th. Peg Pellerin will need quite a bit of help. She needs help with Friday night set up, raffles, baked goods, and donation requests. We may ask the confirmation students to help with set up and break down. Brainstorming: The Parish Council bylaws charge the council to get people involved. We need to 0907 Page 5

5 make more efforts to discover the talents of parishioners. We also need to incorporate younger parishioners with church activities. Ideas include: movie nights; bible camp; incorporate children in weekly collections and greeting parishioners; helping with Thanksgiving baskets and Super bowl pops; and singing at the craft fair. Inventory of supplies - The parish should consider inventorying supplies and develop a plan to regularly monitor and replenish the supplies. The parish will consider a Holy Hour before 5:30 Mass on Tuesdays and having Adoration and Confession weekly. Upcoming Events - Bus Trip to NYC sold out 54 seats. 15 standby. (September 22, 2018) Craft fair (Saturday November 17) Christmas party (Saturday Dec 15) HOLY NAME EVENTS Attention Crafters.. The Holy Name Annual Christmas Bazaar continues! This year s date is Saturday, November 17, 2018, 10:00a.m. until 4:00p.m. As always, this wonderful fair takes place at our Social Center. Crafters applications are now being accepted. Please call Peggy Pellerin at for applications and information. Vendor deadline is Tuesday, October 30 th. Again there will be a Treasures Table, for new or fairly new items that you have at home that you have never used or don t plan to use, and would like to donate. If you would like to participate in this year s bazaar, we are very much in need of: VENDORS and VOLUNTEERS!! (Please call Peggy at A.S.A.P.!) 1) Raffle Prizes - Donated raffle prizes will be grouped together and put into themed baskets, such as a Candle basket, Children s basket, Beauty basket, etc. 2) Children s Books (please, excellent condition only) and D.V.D.s If you have an item or items you would like to donate as raffle prizes or for the Treasures Table (which includes items for children), please bring to the Sacristy in a bag marked for Peggy Pellerin. Your support is very much appreciated. We can all work together to make this the best bazaar ever!! Holy Name Children s Choir We are so happy to see new members joining and hope we can add your family. Our practices are fun for the kids and a great chance to expel that energy in song. Call Peggy at OTHER EVENTS & OPPORTUNITIES About the Diaconate Foundations Series Seminar Are you curious about deacons? Did you know there were some pretty famous deacons like St. Francis? As the Church celebrates the 50 th Anniversary of the Diaconate in the United States, we are offering a seminar about the diaconate explaining what a deacon is; where the role came from; and what deacons do in the modern Church. This seminar will be held on a Saturday and will consist of two parts. The first part describes the diaconate and answers your questions. After a break, part two will explore the diaconate in our diocese and discuss the process entering discernment and formation for the diaconate. All are welcome to attend both parts of the day. Men considering the diaconate should, with their wives, attend the full seminar. We ll have snacks and drinks. You may want to bring a lunch. This seminar will hold its third of three seminars on Saturday, 10:00 am 2:00 pm at Mary, Mother of Hope Parish in Springfield on October 20. The principal instructor will be Deacon Tom Lynch. Oktoberfest Beer Tasting, Saturday, Oct. 20 at 7pm at St. Mary s Parish Center, 519 Longmeadow St., Longmeadow. Join the St. Mary s Knights of Columbus Council 5406 for a fun, interactive evening of tasting and learning, sampling a selection of beers from the Trappist Monks who operate the Spencer Brewery, in Spencer, MA. A representative from the Spencer Brewery will discuss how and why Trappist monks have been brewing beer for hundreds of years. $25 per person, ages 21+. Please join the C3 Forest Park Police Unit for our Annual Halloween Party on Friday October 26, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm. at the Holy Name Social Center, 53 Alderman Street, Springfield MA, Trunk or Treat begins at 5:00 p.m. till 5:45 and the party follows from 5:45 till 7:00 p.m. There will be lots of pizza, popcorn, cake, and candy. Bring out your best costume for a chance to win the costume contest and your dancing shoes for the dance contest.
