2 2 A Word from Our Pastor Dear FBC Pelham Family, October is a spectacular month! Allow me to mention several of the exciting events planned for you and our community Fall Festival On Sunday, October 1, join us in the parking lot of Summer Classics from 4:00-6:00 PM for our annual Fall Festival. There will be games, rides, inflatables, candy, and food trucks. This will be a safe, fun, family-friendly environment and admission is FREE. Invite your family and friends. Registration armbands will be made available for our faith family on Sunday morning and we are asking for families to drive in one car since parking just might be at a premium. Student Retreat Please remember our students in prayer as they host their annual Fall Retreat October 7-9. May this spiritual weekend be challenging, encouraging, and motivational for the 100 plus students and adults. Operation Christmas Child Packing Party Join us for our second annual OCC packing party in the Annex on Sunday, October 15 from 4:00-7:00 PM. We will be packing 1500 shoeboxes, praying over them, and enjoying a sweet time of fellowship. If you would like to help pay some of the $9 postage/ box then please indicate that on a check or envelope. This promises to be an awesome experience. You do NOT want to miss this mission moment! The Harvest This revival event will be October Dr. Reginald Calvert will be preaching Sunday morning (9:15 AM and 10:45 AM); Dr. Kevin Hamm will be preaching Sunday evening (6:00 PM); Dr. Robert Smith will be our guest preacher on Monday (6:30 PM); Dr. Adam Dooley will be our preacher on Tuesday (6:30 PM); and Scott Dawson will be our evangelist on Wednesday (6:30 PM). D&D Commitment Sunday On Sunday, October 29 we will have D&D Commitment Sunday during both morning services. On that day we will have the opportunity to enlist or renew in this financial campaign that helps us as a faith family reduce debt and raise disciples. The commitment that we make is above and beyond the giving of our tithes and offerings and the money designated for D&D is divided 80% towards debt reduction and 20% to help raise disciples. Our second annual report card will be placed in the bulletin in October where we will report our missions and debt reduction giving for October 2016-September Your Pastor and Friend, Daven You are cordially invited to attend the Grand Opening Ceremony of First Baptist Church of Denham Springs Louisiana Hwy 16 Denham Springs, LA on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 5 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Please join us for a time of celebration, including refreshment and tour of the new facility, following the opening ceremony at 5 p.m. Dr. Leo Miller, Pastor
3 It might still be warm outside, but It s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas in the Worship Ministry. The entire ministry is working steadily towards our Christmas program on December 10. The only thing missing is YOU!! I d love to see some new faces in the choir and orchestra. Ask any member of the ministry, and you ll get a sense of the excitement building around this year s program! Worship Ministry With a church our size, I m confident that we have members who play an instrument. Maybe you re a high school student involved in your local band program, or you re an adult with instrumental experience. If so, I want to invite you to join our orchestra. We need YOU!!! If you are interested in joining us, all you have to do is show up!! It s never too late to sing in the choir or play in the orchestra. Drop me an and 3 let me know that you re coming! I ll do everything I can to make you feel welcomed and a part of our ministry family!! bfuller@fbcpelham.org Once again, let me say what an honor it is to be your Worship Pastor! Cathy and I are so thankful to be a part of this church family! I ll see you in worship! Brett Come and bring your friends with you. This Sunday, October PM Summer Classics Parking Lot Highway 31 in Pelham Senior Adult Ministry Dear Senior Adults, September was the month to collect items for Operation Christmas Child. I hope you have brought the items listed in the bulletin. We need those items no later than October 8th. The Packing Party is coming up on October 15, from 4-7 P.M. in the Annex. Remember, the OCC was initiated at FBCP by Senior Adults; now it has gone church-wide. We must not fail to participate. Senior Adults are all in! Remember the Senior Adults will be going to Atlanta to assist in sorting the other OCC boxes on November 27th 1-5 P.M. This is a one-day-trip, and we will leave at 8, have lunch in Atlanta and return that evening. This is the date OCC has given us. We have only 45 slots to fill. If anyone, even though you are not a Senior Adult, desires to go with us, you need to let me know ASAP so transportation can be planned. Note: The Callaway Gardens Trip is on for November This is an overnight trip to see the light show and tour the gardens. This includes lodging and a meal. See Barbara for information and details about the trip. Lastly, our October 10th luncheon will be part of the 21 Days of Prayer for our Revival. Come, bring your favorite dish, fellowship and pray with us. Thank you for your faithfulness! May God Bless you richly! We love you dearly, Brother Paul & Barbara
4 4 Activities/Outreach Ministries Are you willing to sponsor a child to play basketball? We have had several families needing financial help to be able to play basketball this year. The cost for a child to play is $75. If you are willing and able, we would be so grateful to be able to offer these families a scholarship to allow their children to play. Any amount you are able to give would help these families. Will you commit to pray for 100 days? We are seeking 100 people to pray for Upward for 100 days. The prayer time commitment ends on February 4th- the day of our Awards Ceremony. We will present the gospel and are praying for a great harvest. You can pick up a prayer guide from the Welcome Center. Also, if you are interested in serving on the Upward ministry team, we still need concessions workers, coaches, assistant coaches, referees, clock operators, score book keepers, and greeters. Contact me (Donnie) if you are interested. You can still register for the Upward Basketball/Cheerleading season by going online registration.upward.org/upw64512 or by picking up a paper registration packet from the church offices. The price is $85. Evaluations are October 2, 3, and 5 from 6 until 8:30. We will begin practices on November 6th. Games are scheduled for December 2, 9, 16, January 6, 13, 20, 27, and February 3. Our awards night will be Sunday, February 4, Donnie Sisk The Counselor s Corner Biblical Teachings on Mental Illness There are many stories in the Bible on the rejection of those afflicted with illness. Most rejection occurred because people did not understand the illness or the cause. In Jesus lifetime, it was believed that sin was the cause of serious illness. This is evident in John 9:2 where the disciples were ready to blame sin for the cause of a man s blindness as they asked, Who sinned, this man or his parents that he was born blind? Just as heart disease or diabetes is a result of a malfunctioning organ, mental illness is a disorder that occurs because the brain isn t working as it should. Jesus quickly put to rest the accusation that either this man or his family had sinned. In physical illness or injury both scientific and behavioral techniques are used to actively manage debilitating conditions. Through the use of behavioral techniques such as exercise, positive thinking or practicing a new habit until it fits; many conditions can be managed in such a way that the individual can live a fulfilling lifestyle. This includes mental illness. Physical exercise is hard, but with work can produce stronger muscles, more flexibility, a stronger heart, lower blood pressure and cholesterol and help to stave off dementia. Mental exercise can assist in relaxation, calmness, strengthening neural pathways, increase mental proficiency, and positive affirmation, just to name a few. The Lord gives us helpful suggestions on improving mental health.. We just have to practice them until we truly believe them. Here are a few references. Anxiety: Philippians 4:6-7. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Depression: Philippians 4:8.. whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Positive Thoughts: Proverbs 16:24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Hope: Romans 8:28. And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Change your thinking: 2 Corinthians 10:5. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. Linda Story
