1 November 2017 Newsletter 211 Marvin Road, Indian Land, SC P: PleasantValleyBaptistSC In 1863, President Lincoln set Thanksgiving as an official holiday to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year. On October 3, 1863, he issued a proclamation which contained the following: I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November (next), as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. The original intent for this holiday was to take time to reflect on the many blessings God has bestowed upon us and our country. Unfortunately the emphasis has shifted from taking time to honor and thank God to simply gathering with friends and family to eat a meal together, watch the Thanksgiving day parade, football, or look at the black Friday ads. In fact, many people refer to Thanksgiving as turkey day. What s missing? Pausing long enough to thank God for His grace, mercy and abundant provisions. This is not new. In Luke 17:11-19, Luke chronicles an event where Jesus was met by ten lepers on His way to Jerusalem. Upon seeing Jesus, the lepers said, Jesus, have mercy on us. All Jesus said was, Go and show yourself to the priests. And as they turned away as instructed, they were completely healed. You would think they would have immediately turned around and run to Jesus to express heart-felt thanks for this miraculous healing, yet only one out of the ten did. Can you believe how ungrateful those nine were? Jesus blessed them with healing which after presenting themselves to the priest would allow them to re-enter society! Well, before we judge them we would do well to examine our own hearts and consider how many times we ve failed to stop and give God thanks for the many blessings He s given us. Just a thought! in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:18 ) Pastor Vail New to Pleasant Valley Baptist Church? 2 Missions We will launch our campaign for the Lottie Moon Christmas offering on November 26 th. The money raised from this campaign goes toward supporting IMB missionaries (International Mission Board). One-hundred percent of the gifts given go to support IMB missionaries and their work around the world. Last year we raised nearly $6500! WMU During October we collected a $590 love offering for the Pure Water Pure Love Ministry. Our November project is to bring specific items to prepare the prisoner bags for the York Baptist Association to take to Columbia, SC. We invite all ladies to join us the second Tuesday of the month at 10 am for our missions study followed by lunch fellowship at a nearby restaurant. Carol Hutchinson Missions/Outreach Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes Thank you to everyone who donated items over the past several months for our OCC shoebox collection. On Sunday night, October 29th we had a packing party where we took the items and packed a whole lot of shoe boxes for boys and girls ages Good News Club Students are continuing to join us at Indian Land Elementary for our GNC. We hope that you will continue to pray for all our kids and workers. We also want to ask you to pray for more workers who would be willing to go into Harrisburg Elementary, so we can start a GNC club there and bring the gospel to those children. Thank you for your continued support. Kaye LeRoy Connie Martin Widows Ministry We will be launching a ministry to widows very soon. Sandy Snyder will be helping to get this ministry started. More details will be shared through the various communication tools (i.e. bulletin, newsletter, website). Angel Tree Again this Christmas season, we are excited to be partnering with operation Angel Tree and the Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Department to bless Indian Land families in need. Once the need is verified and help is accepted, then each child in the family receives 4 tags, 2 for clothing items and 2 for non clothing items. We anticipate the Angel tags to arrive mid November. As soon as they arrive we will make the announcement in the church bulletin. Thanks for your help and prayers for these families.

3 Biblical Instruction/Discipleship New Sermon Series Beginning in November our Pastor will be presenting a study of the book of Philippians entitled, Joy No Matter What. We ll learn from what Paul wrote while in prison to the church at Philippi regarding how to have joy regardless of our circumstances. Special Thanksgiving/Communion service Join us Sunday night, November 19 th for our annual Thanksgiving/ communion service. This is always a special service as we reflect on who God is and all that He has done for us. Please bring finger foods for the fellowship following the service. Student Ministries We continue to collect funds to replace the tiles in the Worship Center with carpet. We ll be going through the series, Beyond Reasonable Doubt: Evidence for the truth of Christianity. All 6 th 12 th graders are welcome to join us. Sunday Nights Pastor Phil is leading our youth ensemble from 6:15-7:00pm. Mid-week activity/bible Study We meet on Tuesday nights from 6:30-8pm in the Youth House. We start out by playing games followed by spending time learning more about our faith. Our current study, Jesus: Fact or Fiction provides responses to 50 of life s toughest questions regarding the authenticity of our faith. We encourage all students 6 th 12 th grade to come and bring a friend. Activities - On October 14 th, our students served at our annual Fall Festival. Their presence made a significant impact on many of our guests! On Saturday evening, November 25 th from 7-10pm, our students will be working at Samaritan s Purse Operation Christmas Child. During those three hours we ll be processing shoe boxes and praying for the recipients of the boxes along with hundreds of other volunteers. Students interested in participating must sign up (participants are required to be at least 13 years old). Sign up on the sheet in the Youth House or by contacting the church office. Student Pastor Search: On Saturday and Sunday November 4-5 we are hosting a prospective candidate. On Saturday he and his wife will be having breakfast with the pastors and deacons. During the afternoon he will spend time with the students followed by eating dinner with the students and their parents. We will have him introduce himself to the church during the Sunday morning worship service.

4 Music Ministry The Holidays are fast approaching! (Only 9 weeks til Christmas!!) It s hard to believe but this year has gone by so fast! It is so awesome to see what God is doing through our worship and our church. We are still in the process of expanding the music ministry to reach as many people as possible. I see a lot of you singing on Sunday morning and I think you would sound great in the adult choir! If you ve been thinking about joining, now is a great time, we have begun working on our annual Christmas program and we need as many singers as possible! It only takes an hour a week and can make an eternal difference. Also Parents, I want to encourage you to bring your children and students to choir on Sunday nights! We have started a children s choir for grades 1-5 and youth ensemble meets every Sunday night for grades Both groups meet at 6pm downstairs. I am still trying to get Handbells up and going. If you are interested in ringing for the holidays, please contact me ASAP!! We need at least 9-11 ringers to make it happen! Senior Ministry We had a great time at the Cove and York Bapt. Assoc. last month. We have a couple of things coming up in November. November 28 th we will be going to Samaritan s Purse to process shoeboxes. We have 20 spots available so sign up today! Also we have an opportunity to work at Jackson Park Ministries on Thursday November 2 nd. We have spots for 8-10 people. Fall Festival Worship & Senior Adult Ministry Many thanks to all who volunteered, prayed, donated candy or helped in any way. It was a huge effort that took a lot of people and you showed up big time. Fall Festival was a great event that reached lots of families in our community! It s awesome to see what God is doing through our hands and feet. Children s Ministry We are in our second month of Awana Club, and everyone has settled into their respective routines. We have truly been blessed by God for sending us around 75 children who now attend our Awana Club program. We have had an amazing response from our youth and our seniors, as they have dedicated themselves to working with the clubbers to memorize God s Word. Funding is needed for a new lighting system in our PVKids Music Room for the stage area, as well as for some necessary repairs/updates to our current playground equipment to repair splitting and weakening boards. Donations can be made to the Children s Special Project Fund towards these, and other projects. During our Sunday morning PVKids Worship Time, we have an immediate need for volunteers to serve on a rotational basis during the Worship hour. We are utilizing the new Think Orange 252 Program, which is not only fun to teach, but is also a great way to learn how to apply God s Word to our daily lives. 5 Nursery Schedule The nursery schedule is being communicated through our Planning Center software which automatically sends an to each volunteer. Because of this we will no longer be printing the schedule in he newsletter or bulletin. If for any reason you are not receiving a reminder , please contact me. We appreciate the two families who donated the funds to make this possible Proposed Budget The Finance Committee has completed the proposed 2018 annual budget which will be voted on after the evening service on November 26 th. Copies of the proposed budget will be available on November 12 th. Finance Committee members will be available to answer any questions you may have after the morning worship services and before the evening service on the 12 th and 19 th.

6 Notes & Notices The Ola Warren Patterson and John W. Patterson Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established for students who are active members from one of the four cooperating churches (Flint Hill Baptist, First Baptist, Pleasant Valley Baptist and Park Road Baptist) and are seeking an undergraduate degree from one of the following four schools: Wake Forest University, Winston Salem, NC Campbell University, Buies Creek, NC Meredith College, Raleigh, NC Furman University, Greenville, SC If you have been an active member here for at least a year and plan to attend one of the above schools you can apply for this scholarship. Since this fund was established in 1994, we have not had anyone from PVBC apply to receive the scholarship. The Pastors of each of the four cooperating churches serve on the committee to award the funds. In one of the previous years, a student was awarded over $50,000. The amount awarded is based on how many qualified students apply and the amount made available from the fund. The deadline to apply is May 15. Please call or the office if you would like to receive an application packet or have questions. It would be great to see someone here at PVBC receive part of these funds. It s a great opportunity. Additional info: Ola and her husband John W. Patterson s home church was Flint Hill Baptist Church. Having no children of their own, they cared for several family members during their times of need, taking them to Pleasant Valley Baptist, First Baptist in Fort Mill and Park Road Baptist in Charlotte, as they requested. This is the reason that the four churches are named in the scholarship fund. Budget Report Budget to date: $ 381, Receipts to date: $ 364, As you can see, we re slightly behind budget through the first 10 months.
