CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts. GLE18. Describe economic activities within and among American Indian cultures prior to contact with Europeans (E-1A-M9) GLE24. Use both a primary and secondary source to describe key events or issues in early American history (H-1A-M4) Focus Objectives The Student will learn Activities: LCC Unit: Activity: Bell Ringer/Set Induction (bell ringer activity such as a question in the format of the state assessment or a progress monitoring tool to check for understanding): Daily Oral Geography questions or ileap practice (2\5 th grade level). Students will discuss and answer two questions daily. Students will take five unseen comprehension exercises that follow the GLE s during the nine week period. The exercises will be worth one major grade. The teacher will teach and model using the following methodologies: Teacher will review with students objective of lesson, reading and understanding indenture servant s contracts by examining original and translated contracts. Teacher will introduce primary source topic by showing a copy of Orson s Indentured Servant Contract. Teacher will also hand out copy of questions needed to be researched by students. Students will be put in groups of four with assigned jobs (Leader, Gatherer, Reporter, and Timekeeper). 2 Guided Practice: Students and teacher will discuss questions, (Attachment F Primary Sources Questions ) to be answered during discussion of primary source Indenture of Orson, 27 September (Attachment G). Teacher and students will read and discuss copy of contract describing terms of contract between Orson and Col. Elias Thompson. Teacher and students will answer questions 1-3 on question sheet. Independent Practice: Students will complete questions 4-11 working as a group. Closure: should be student-led: Class will discuss answers to questions they completed. What was the creator s purpose in making this primary source? 10. What or who was this primary source s audience? 11. What biases or stereotypes do you see? SUMMARIZE: What have you learned. 4 Attachment G Indenture of Orson, 27 September 1764 Westerly (R.I.) Town Council Records, Vol. 5, page 62 This Indenture made & Ratified the 27th Day of September in the 4th Year of his Majestys Reign George the Third King &c 1764 By and between Col. Elias Thompson and Orson (son to a Mustee woman that is commonly called old Hittey) a Mustee Fellow both of Westerly in Kings County in the Colony of Rhode Island &c. Witnesseth that whereas I the said Orson having served my Time as an Apprentice to the sd Elias Thompson and have been Used there very kindly by him and his Family &c. And being Now out of my Time, and knowing that I am Some thing weak in Capacity, & having taken the advice of my Friends &c. Do hereby Agreeable to their sd Advice, and also do of my own free Will & Choies, for the following Considerations hereafter Specified &c put & bind myself And do by these presents freely fully & absolutely put and by these presents do put and bind myself unto him the sd Elias Thompson his Legal Heirs Execurs. & Administrators from the Date hereof Seventy Years to be fully compleated & Ended1 them & either of them to serve faithfully their Secrets keep and all their Lawful commands Gladly every where obey; Said Orson shall not absent myself from or out of their sd Service by night or by day without Leave first obtained from them said Orson shall not haunt Taverns & ale Houses nor play at Cards or Dice or any Unlawful Games nor waste Lend or see the Goods or Estate of any of his said Masters or Familys wasted without Giveing proper Notice thereof, said Orson shall not Commit Fornication During sd Terme nor Contract Matrimony without leave from his present Master at that Time But sd Orson shall at all Times behave himself well 1There is apparently a line missing in this copy of the indenture written into the town records. Typical language from other indentures of the time suggest that the missing line (bold) probably read as follows:... to be fully compleated and Ended on the 27th day of September 1834, during which time he the said Orson his said master, heirs, executors, and administrators, them and either of them to serve faithfully... ] according to the True Intent & meaning of this Indenture said Orson shall not make nor Contract

5 bargains without Leave from his said Master during sd Term &c And the sd Elias Thompson doth hereby promise & engage for himself his Heirs Execurs. & Administr. to & with sd Orson & also to & with any person or persons that shall or may be hereafter appointed Guardian or Overseer over sd Orson by sd Town of Westerly To find sd Orson in good Sufficient meat Drink washing & Lodging with Suitable & Sufficient Apparel fitting all parts of his Body to Labour in as well in sickness as in health during sd Term with such Clothes as shall be Deamed fit for sd Orson to wear to Meeting and said Orson shall be allowed the Liberty of going to meeting one Day in every week during said Term And said Orson may git him a wife or mate in sd Term if he think it best, And sd Orson s children (if he hath any) Shall not be Obliged to live with sd Thompson except born in his House. And sd Orson s Time shall not be sold to any person or persons during sd Term nor this Indenture attempted to be assigned over to any person whatsoever Nor sd Orson shalt not be moved out of the Family of the sd Thompson s nor said Orsons Time sold during sd Term to any person but to whom sd Orson shall Choose to go & live with, And sd Orson Choice before he is sold shall be Approbated & approved of by Two Justices of the Peace of sd Town of Westerly. And the president of sd Westerly s Council for the Time being And the sd Elias doth promise & engage as aforesaid to find sd Orson as aforesaid in & with all sd Necessaries in Sickness and health &c during sd Term And besides all sd Necessaries to give unto sd Orson or his Legal order [sic] yearly and every Year the Sum of one hundred pounds old Tenor or any other Money that as Now equal thereunto to be paid to said Orson as aforesaid every Year so long as said Orson can be able & Capable of doing a Mans daily Labour during sd Term &c. And if sd Thompson sells to sd Orson any Necessaries during sd Term said Thompson shall sell all sd Necessaries to sd Orson as Cheape as if sd Orson did pay the Cash down And when sd Orson shall become old & unable & incapable of doing a Man s Daily Labour &c Then the sd Elias Thompson doth hereby promise & engage for himself his Heirs Execurs. & Adminisrs. to find said Orson all proper Necessaries of Life for his proper Support during sd Term without any reward or Satisfaction only what Labour sd Orson can then do in the

And said Elias both also promise as aforesaid to keepe and for ever Bear harmless sd Town of Westerly from all Manner of Costs and Charges that Shall or may Lawfully arrise about maintaining said Orson &c. And Also this Indenture shall be soon Recorded in said Westerly s Town Records at said Thompson s Cost &c In Witness wherefore we have hereunto set our Hands & affixed our seals the Day & Date first Written Aforesaid &c. Signed by Elias Thompson Orson his mark [capital Q] a Mustee fellow Witnessed by Steph. Lanpher and Isaac Babcock Recorded in Westerly October 2, 1764 by Joseph Crandall Town Clerk. Personally appeared Col. Elias Thompson and Orson a Mustee Fellow both of sd Westerly and did freely Acknowledge the foregoing Indenture by them signed & sealed to be their free Act & Deed Hand & Seals before us And we taking the same into our Consideration do Adjudge the Conditions very Reasonable therefore approbate the same &c.
