2 2 Page 2 THE TIE K ILLINGSWORTH GALA FROM A FIRST TIMER S POINT OF VIEW First-Timer Was Impressed! I had heard about it for over twenty years. This year the date was open on my calendar and I decided to attend the 22nd Annual Killingsworth Gala with friends from St. Paul's Waccamaw UMW, who have started attending every year. Not knowing what to expect, I asked questions, and found out you don't need to wear afterfive fashions to this Gala. Leave that to the models parading the runway during the style show. A former Killingsworth resident modeled and gave her personal testimony which was very moving.(photo top left) Twelve models changed from casual wear to business/church fashions, provided by Dillard s, and finally "Put on the Ritz!"(photo at left) The Gala is a fundraiser so bring a credit card or a checkbook or a little extra cash. Seating is limited. so get your tickets early for a table near the runway. Arrive early in order to look at all the tempting silent auction items donated and return to check on your last bid before "Jingle Bells" is finished playing. Seawell's Convention Center is lovely and accommodating. Kudos to all who helped with the beautiful decorations. Worthwhile event? You bet it is. Lots of fun and a good reason to "dress up." Start planning now to attend the 23rd Annual Killingsworth Gala on the second Thursday of November, November 12, See you there, Friends of Killingsworth. Judy Lienemann, Marion District Secretary M EET YOUR NEW DISTRICT VICE- PRESIDENT! Greetings! I m Barb Brooks, your new Marion District Vice- President. I moved to S.C. this past May from Michigan and I m looking forward to a winter here in SC. As a retired deaconess/church & community worker, the United Methodist Church has taken me many places. The last 10 years before I retired, I was in Cali, Colombia, South America, teaching English in a mission school. I started my mission work as a US-2 at Boylan-Haven-Mather Academy in Camden, SC and was later commissioned a deaconess. From there I worked at Bethlehem Community Center in Columbia, SC. I love working with the UMW and am thrilled to be a study leader for Latin America this summer at Mission U. I hope you will take advantage of Mission U. I think it s one of the best things we do. Officers Training will be January 10, 2015 at Aynor UMC. Please attend with all your local officers. This is a great time to get to know each other and share ideas. If your local unit is interested in having a program about deaconesses/home missioners or mission work in Cali, Colombia, let me know. S ECRETARY OF PROGRAM RESOURCES Ladies! I hope that you are enjoying a wonderful Advent season and are looking forward to the New Year! We are excited about 2015 ad hope that your units are making plans to make it the best year ever. Our sales for the district annual meeting totaled $896.50, and I want to thank Judy Lienemann and Pam Walton for a job well done in the Resource room. I will have resources available for purchase at our Officers Training on January 10. I look forward to seeing many of you there at Aynor United Methodist Church. Please let me know if I can be of assistance to your unit. Blessings, Pam King

3 3 Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 3 G REETINGS FROM OUR NEW PRESIDENT Hello Ladies! I m your new District President, Jane Crawford. Thank you for your vote of confidence. I m looking forward to meeting more of you during one or more of the many events planned in The first being our Local Officers Training on January 10, 2015 at Aynor UMC. This is the perfect event for your local unit officers to learn more information about their positions. It is also a chance to meet your District Officers and network with other United Methodist Women. I also invite you to attend the Mini Mission U on January 24, 2015 at Latta UMC. This event promises to be both informative and spiritually enriching. The cost is just $13 and lunch is included. Legislative Day will be February 17 at Epworth in Columbia and District Officers will also be visiting various churches in the district for the cluster meetings. All dates will be announced soon. The annual Day Apart service will be held in Bennettsville this year on April 18th. I know this sounds like a lot and I don t want you to be overwhelmed. I am encouraging you to take part in as many events as possible and invite potential new members. I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday and I wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!! I look forward to seeing you in 2015!! 7 7 Greetings from our new officers! Hi, I m the new Marion District Secretary. My name is Judy Lienemann. If my name sounds familiar to you, it is probably because you have been attending functions in our district and met me at the registration tables as the Marion District Treasurer. Having survived that job, I am back now as the District Secretary, taking minutes at all the executive board meetings and the Annual District Meeting. Our hope is that each active unit will be sending several officers to the training being offered at Aynor U.M.C. on Saturday, January 10. You do not need to pre-register for this event. After the opening session everyone breaks off into a workshop being led by a district officer with the same title as their own. I will be observing the Secretary s Workshop being led by Paula Youngs, the previous secretary, whose term just ended. Looking forward to getting together. Let s keep the channels of communication open between the executive board and your local unit. I can be reached anytime at lienemanns2@sccoast.net or by phoning (H). Thank you for being an officer in your local unit and an active member of Marion District U.M.W. Greetings Marion District UMW Sisters!! My name is Diane Strickland and I am happy to serve as the new Marion District Spiritual Growth Coordinator. I am a member of Belin Memorial UMC in Murrells Inlet. I hope to meet you all at various Unit, District and Conference events over the next few months and most definitely at our Day Apart event in Bennettsville April 18. More detailed information will be coming soon! But for now, as we move into this Advent season, I shall leave you with some words from Paul, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Romans 15:13 (NIV) Merry Christmas!! See you in 2015!!
