1 Inside this issue: Important Dates and Local District 2-6 Conference Announce- South Carolina United Methodist Conference August 2014 Rev. Joe N. Long, Jr., District Superintendent Lollie Haselden, District Secretary 139 Elizabeth Lane, Rock Hill, SC fax 7-12 LJA Asbury Hills 16 Fkyers Hand-in-Hand in the Rock Hill District I am grateful for the faithful service of the pastors in our district. Called to the work of ministry, which always demands sacrifice, these men and women serve in a time of transition and landscape of a mission field. This adaptation of a saying by Richard DeHamm expresses the demands of ministry. A good pastor must have: The strength of an ox, The tenacity of a bulldog, The daring of a lion, The wisdom of an owl, The harmlessness of a dove, The industry of a beaver, The gentleness of a sheep, The versatility of a chameleon, The vision of an eagle, The hide of a rhinoceros, The perspective of a giraffe, The disposition of an angel, The endurance of a camel, The bounce of a kangaroo, The stomach of a horse, The loyalty of an apostle, The faithfulness of a prophet, The tenderness of a shepherd, The fervency of an evangelist, The devotion of a mother. And then, the good pastor cannot please everybody. Pray for our pastors. Let us support one another in the work of the gospel. Joe

Gates open at 11am both days and Grand Entry on the 1 st is at 1pm and 6pm and at 2pm on the 2 nd. The Grand Entry is actually the start of the Pauwau. Just prior to the Grand Entry, the Grass Dancers are called to Dance the Grass Down. We use the ancient method to prepare the arena for the actual entry of the visiting dignitaries, veterans, tribal officials, and others who hold positions of honor. These honorees are followed by a long line of dancers who practice and represent all of the dance styles from many tribes in the country. After the procession stops, we honor our country with a Flag Song, our veterans with a Veterans Dance, and we have a word of thanks to the Creator for giving us this day and each other. After the Grand Entry we will have the Friendship Dance. The dancers form a long line while holding hands. Lead dancers lead the dance through various movements and tie the line of dancers into various knots and formations inside the dance arena. Everyone is invited to participate. After the Friendship Dance, the master of ceremonies will call for dancers to dance the various styles of dance and the dancers will twirl, dip and repeat movements that their ancestors did before them. There will be 20+ Native American vendors selling their arts and crafts and several food vendors. Admission: $6.00 for Adults, $3.00 for seniors and children 7-14, children 6 and under are free. 14 Page 14 Listed below are two continuing education and training events that could be very helpful to your local church. Both events are being held at Lake Junaluska. Shifts: Guiding the Congregation Toward Effectiveness - August 18-20, 2014 Are you serving one of the congregations from all over the country are seeking to live into their potential, reach their communities, and transform lives in the name of Jesus? This could be just the help you are looking for! The investment of just a couple of days could transform your ministry. Let us help you take a step back to see the big picture of your ministry systems and some best practices to lead your congregation toward greater health and vitality. The workshop is built around five shifts to move your congregation forward: From Fellowship to Hospitality From Worship as an event to Worship as a Lifestyle From Membership to Discipleship From Serve Us to Service From Survival to Generosity You and your team will leave this event with a plan for moving your congregation, in its context, into a healthier future! From Membership to Discipleship - August 20-22, 2014 In a culture where the Church seems to have lost much of its relevance there is no greater need than the making of mature disciples. Yet, in spite of the fact that this is the very reason we exist, a significant percentage of our congregations struggle with how to build a process for making disciples. This seminar provides a step-by-step process for building a discipleship process in your ministry context, including: Foundations clearly defining discipleship and understanding how maturity is developed Movements understanding the catalysts and practices for supporting spiritual growth Discipleship as a Contact Sport - discipleship happens in relationships. Discover which types of relationships are most helpful at different points along the journey The Discipleship Cycle supporting the growth of disciples through phases of development A System for Intentional Discipleship learning from the best in history at making disciples (Jesus, The Apostle Paul, John Wesley) participants build a process for their ministry context Go to: ww.lakejunaluska.com For more information!
