2 A Message From Your Humbled Servant For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 As our 2018 year comes to a close, it is my hope that you can look back on the year and celebrate the accomplishments of our United Methodist Women s organization. Our district exceeded our $65,000 budget commitment to the Conference. You will be so happy to know that our Treasurer s report shows that we actually submitted $71, to the conference. Give yourselves a pat on the back and give yourself a big hug! It is a wonderful thought knowing that these dollars will be distributed to missions around our state, around our nation and around the world! YOU DID IT!!! Thanks for all you do for UMW!!! Thanks to Trenholm Road UMW for hosting our 46th annual meeting Making a Difference. The speaker Jen Thompson, Executive Director at Lighthouse for Life and two-time National Board-Certified teacher, gave us a great message on Human Trafficking. It s right here in our back doors and we don t realize it. Invite her to your meetings so you can hear it first-hand. There were 21 churches recognized for accomplishing the requirements for Mission Today Units, 87 participants in the reading program, 14 churches receiving the Diamond Unit Award and 25 churches receiving Five Star and Gold Seal Unit Awards. We are proud of these numbers as they are small increases over last year. God is still working through our ladies to keep the fire burning and get stronger every year. Over 8, 300 hours reported for Campaign for Children, mentoring, reading, tutoring and church schools. Let s keep it up! Our children need us! If you have any spare time, find a school near you and sign up to Mentor a child. Let us continue to grow our units and continue to pray for those units that are not operating under the UMW bylaws that they will see and know that where two or three are gathered in His name, He is there with you also. The future and hope of many women and children is made brighter because of the things we do as United Methodist Women. Remembering our Purpose we are a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ. See you at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church 1008 Asbury Drive, Columbia, SC on Saturday, January 12 for Officers Training. Registration will begin at 8:45am and program will begin at 9:30am. Mark your calendars today. Unit Presidents Please PLEASE encourage your officers to attend. There will be classes for all officers even Historian and Circle Leaders. Even if you are holding the same office as last year, we need you, I need you to come and share your experiences with others. Thank you for all you do for United Methodist Women. Remember He knows the plans He has for us plans to prosper and give us hope for the future. Have a Happy, Safe and Blessed Holiday Season! Love, Peace and Grace to you! Sandra Love Columbia District President

3 Message From Our Vice President As 2018 draws to a close, I would like to thank all of you wonderful women for making this year so special! We have journeyed through training and a Day Apart - where we learned to make reusable hygiene pads for young ladies and women in countries where there is no access to these items! We have grown together at Lake Junaluska at the Spiritual Growth Retreat and grown even more at our annual Mission U training. We learned about the evils of Human Trafficking and we celebrated our accomplishments at our Annual meeting this year!!! What a blessing these events have brought to our lives. We accomplish so much when we work together!! God is good, all the time. As we celebrate the birth of our Savior, let s remember, there is still much work to be done for our women and youth in our Country and all over the World. I look forward to a powerful 2019 and making a difference. Join me for the journey!!!! Respectfully, P. S. As we journey together, please don t forget our sisters in Church Women United. What a special group of ladies! Service is their focus and the events they have during the year reflect their giving hearts. Join us at our annual meeting on January 25th at the Brookland Convention Center!!!! A list of celebrations is attached. Debra Schooler Columbia District Vice President ATTENTION: The conference has decided to hold conference officer training every year in Columbia because Columbia is centrally located in the state. The conference officer training is usually held second Saturday in November. Please contact Sandra Love at if you will host conference officer training in It would be great to get commitments through 2023.

4 Secretary Notes I want to say thank you for allowing me to be your secretary for the past two years. I have made new friends, enjoyed fellowship with other board members, grown closer to God by observing my sisters in Christ as they made decisions that effected the Columbia District United Methodist Women as well as SC Conference United Methodist Women, and countless other men, women, youth and children as they served in a variety of ways in their church, community, and family. May we all continue this service as our individual witness to our Mighty and Powerful God. Your new secretary will be Carrie Murray from France Burns United Methodist Church. I know you will be as supportive of her as you have been to me. I will be working to update the Columbia District United Methodist Women directory. At the training session held on November 10, it was suggested the directory contain only the four elected offices plus the chair on nominations. Please complete the following information and send to me. 6 6 Treasurer s Report And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without packages, boxes or bags. 11 11 Membership, Nurture, and Outreach Report Greetings my Sisters in Christ, URGENT: Local Presidents and MN&O Coordinators Please Read Carefully It s the launch of the 2018 census. The national office is excited this year as they have taken the findings from the 2017 census report and applied that knowledge in shaping the questions and information shared on the NEW 2018 census. The census questions are designed to inform decision making at the national, conference and district levels. The national goal is to increase membership by 2 percent at the district level by 2020, so the feedback received through the census is critical in how national plans strategically to meet this goal. The census will be open from October 9, 2018 until March 30, I want to thank all the district local UMW persons who were diligent in completing and making sure that 2017 census was completed. The Columbia District reported 1,525 members in We must continue our great reporting for census Our goal for 2018 is to have 100 percent of our local units represented in the census. Listed below for your convenience is the link to the instructional video for the 2018 Census. Local Presidents and/or MN&O Coordinators are encouraged to view this video. If there are any questions or if you need additional information, please contact me by at mbelk@sc.rr.com or by phone at (803) The 2018 Census internet link: The 2018 Census will be open from October 9, 2018 to the final deadline March 30, In Addition, this year s Woman of the Year program was a success. Twenty-five (25) Columbia District UMW women were honored at the 2018 Annual Meeting. Each honoree was recognized and received a certificate for her participation. I would like to thank all the churches that participated. I look forward to seeing you at the district officers training January 12, at Asbury UMC. Maeward S. 13 13 Education and Interpretation s Report Each of our missions have many needs both financially and various items. Each mission has also requested lots of prayers. They also express their gratitude to the UMW for all the support to their organizations. Columbia Bethlehem Community Center For the school year CBCC adopted the first graders at E.E. Taylor Elementary school. This allowed 75 book bags to be packed with supplies with the personal requests of each teacher. Both the parents and teachers were very grateful of this donation. CBCC is hosting weekly initiatives to engage the entire family. Bi-monthly they are hosting housekeeping classes facilitated by the executive director. Monthly a community dinner is hosted in partnership with the Potters Resurrection Church and a Family Game night. CBCC was granted the opportunity to open their doors for 29 evacuees from a senior home in Georgetown, SC. They were able to provide shelter for five nights and four days. Hot meals were donated, one being from the infamous locally owned restaurant, Kiki s Chicken and Waffles. The community partners at Right Direction Church International, allowed the guests to use their gym showers to bath daily. Spartanburg Bethlehem Community Center The Center received program excellence award from the United Way for the SOAR after school Program. Senior Wellness Program is in full swing. The After School program operates year round and is doing well in assisting students in life skills and readiness in academics. Killingsworth The Gala was held on November 8th at Seawells. Everyone enjoyed themselves. They want to thank everyone who helped in all aspects of the Gala. Please see their web site for needed items. The house is full with 16 residents and there is waiting list. Rural Missions It is hard to believe that Rural Missions will be 50 years old in And they are looking forward to serving the community another 50 years, the Lord Providing. They have several immediate needs, financially and a volunteer Web Master or someone in Public Relations. Can contact via Facebook or Web page. Wallace Family Life Center They still have a need for donations to replace the bus which is gasping its last breath! We have about $3800 in that fund. The After School program which has been renamed "Bridging the Gap started on September 4th and is in full swing. There is a fundraiser program, the Adopt a Child $59, and Adopt a Grandparent, $99. which we hope many people will support. You will be sent the names of your adoptee so that you may include them in your prayers. Serving Him Together Meredith Dreibelbis Columbia District E&I Coordinator

14 Program Resource Manager The UMW women have been involved in mission that includes prayer, study and action for 150 years. Let s keep this legacy going. The reading program is a study opportunity, but it should lead to action. The purpose of the program is to encourage members to expand understanding of and participation in God s mission by Increasing sensitivity to all human beings-their needs, interests and concerns Encouraging critical thinking about the issues facing humanity today. Growing in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life. Enhancing self-knowledge and act from this knowledge Strengthening involvement in local and global Christian mission. World Outlook is not longer available. Please continue reading the Response magazine. Do not forget to check your local library for books on the reading lists. Many are available in audible form and on play-away devices. This could be an alternative for those wanting large print. Maybe consider having a kindle for your reading book clubs that can be shared among your members. The print on the kindle can be adjusted to the size needed. Please contact me at any time with any questions or suggestions. Happy reading! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving and wishing you a Merry Christmas! Vanessa Key Reading Resource Manager (voice or text) vangekey1@aol.com

15 Historian CALLING ALL UNITED METHODIST WOMEN! Do you remember attending a United Methodist Women s meeting with your mother or grandmother? Was it United Methodist Women, Women s Missionary Society, or one of the other predecessor organizations? Perhaps you are a member of a brand new unit. We want to know about you! You are being challenged to find out the history of the United Methodist Women s unit at your church! Dig into the file cabinet in the corner of the church office or look at old pictures that may have identifying dates and names of ladies who are attending a United Methodist Women s meeting (or from a predecessor organization). Look high and low to find dates for when your unit was organized. We are looking to CELEBRATE the OLDEST UNIT from each district at the Annual Meeting in Greenville next October. This will give you some time to do some research to find the origins of your unit. OR, Perhaps you are in a BRAND NEW unit. We want to CELEBRATE with you too. NOW WHAT? After you have done the research and know when your unit was organized, send a copy of the picture, the charter, whatever gives proof of the age of your unit to Sue Owens, Conference United Methodist Women s Historian. WHAT TO INCLUDE WHEN SENDING INFORMATION TO SUE: 1. Name of church and District 2. Name of unit (whether United Methodist Women, or one of the predecessor organizations). 3. Visual proof of the age of the unit. This may be a copy of the charter, minutes of church council where it is mentioned that a unit has been formed, pictures of women at a meeting with a visual date, etc. Let your imagination lead you to some possibilities of where this information may be found. 4. Name and contact information of the person making the report 5. The name of the contact person from the church and how to get in touch with her. Please send this information to: Sue Owens, 1286 Montview St. Spartanburg, SC, buttermilk116@att.net Pat Hoesly Historian
