Coming home from District Officers Training in Columbia, I had a flat tire on Interstate 95! After 15 minutes or so, a couple in a car going towards Columbia, stopped, and he came across to help me. After he changed my tire, I learned that they are homeless and living out of their car!!! I hope all local unit officers are planning on coming to Officers Training on Saturday, January 9, 2016, in Aynor. (hard to believe that we are almost ready (or not) for 2016! Come to learn and share from your district counter- part and fellow officers. I m really excited about meeting with the vice-presidents, so all of us can get new ideas for programming for our local units. One of the things I m most grateful for is the organization of United Methodist Women. UMW has played such a huge role in my life for so long. Where else can you be in mission, learn about the world and find the greatest friends that last for a life time? Enjoy the holidays! Barb A NOTE FROM OUR NEW SECRETARY OF PROGRAM RESOURCES BARBARA NELSON I am the newly appointed Marion District Secretary of Program Resources. My active membership is with Little River United Methodist Church where I am the Librarian. As a member of our UMW, I order books and encourage our women to read to become more knowledgeable about the world in which we live. Also, I sing cantatas with choirs, play the hand-bells from time to time, and a dulcimer in our church. Through our Adult Enrichment Series, I play in our bridge group, facilitate our book club, and participate in our very active physical education program weekly. I perform with the North Myrtle Beach Community Band several times a year. I will have resources at the January 9 meeting as well as other meetings that are indicated to me. Thank you, Barbara Nelson Bnnelson123@yahoo.com

8 8 News for Local Unit Secretaries If you are planning to attend the Secretary s Training Workshop at Aynor UMC on Saturday, January 9 th, I will be glad to welcome you and visit with you about what it means to be this important member of your executive board. The minutes you take are the history of your unit. They should include some detail, but should not be a word-for-word of everything said at the meetings. Be brief, be accurate, transcribe your notes quickly, and get them to the other officers within a couple of weeks. Everyone will appreciate being reminded of what is planned, so they can do their part to be ready for the next meeting or event. Your local unit bylaws should state how long the minutes are to be kept A lifetime? Five years? Ten years? And then you archive them so you ll have your history for a 50 th or a 100 th anniversary celebration. I can be reached anytime at lienemanns2@sccoast.net or by phoning (H). Thank you for being an officer in your local unit and an active member of Marion District U.M.W. Judy Lienemann, Marion District Secretary Spiritual Growth Report Diane Strickland Greetings to my Dear Sisters, In looking back over this past year there is much that saddens us and can give us cause for fear. Christians have been persecuted abroad as well as in our own country...in fact in our own state and for some of you in your own city and community. In some communities racial tensions are greater than ever before. Natural disasters have taken their toll. Faith in our political system seems at an all time low. Our world has recently been shaken by the terrorist attack in Paris leading some to say the fight against Isis is becoming the next world war. Children are still hungry. Humans are being sold as commodities. The moral fiber in this country seems to be deteriorating at an alarming rate. People young and old are dying from cancer. And the list goes on and on. It would be easy for anyone to feel discouraged, without hope, powerless, and fearful. But friends, I am reminded time and again of Joshua 1:9, be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified. Do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. And as we enter the season of Advent we are given the opportunity again to reflect on what the coming of the precious child named Jesus over 2000 years ago has meant for us and for all of humanity for all of time. He is The One who gives us hope. He has given us a reason not to be discouraged. He gave us a mission to love thy neighbor as thyself. He is known as The Prince of Peace and as his disciples we have become his agents of peace and love. It is up to us to do what we can to share the love of Christ with everyone (even someone we may not really like!) It is up to us to continue our work and do not become discouraged. It is up to us to pray for the hurting, for our leaders, for our neighbors, for our enemies. It is up to us to love. May you and your families have a Blessed Christmas and may your hearts be overflowing with the love of Jesus so that you may go into the New Year with much love to share. Merry Christmas, Diane Strickland, Marion District Spiritual Growth Coordinator

10 10 Social Action News Linda Eichenbaum Seven District Social Action Chairs met at Shandon UMC in Columbia for Officer Training in early November, with an excellent and collaborative sharing led by our new SCCUMW Social Action Coordinator, Jackie Hicks. After lively discussions, four primary issues were identified for SCCUMW focus in 2016: Poverty Health Care for All Educational Equality Racial Justice Clearly, these issues are inter-related and Districts and then Units may choose to focus upon any one of these OR any other pressing social issues. In 2015 the SCCUMW and the Marion District focused upon two issues: The Elimination of All Forms of Violence and Quality Education for All Our Children. The 20+ Marion District women who gathered at Mission U in July also identified three major issues in our District: Quality Education for All Our Children, Domestic Violence, and Poverty. Our group identified quality education as a necessary foundation to eradicate poverty! Concerning Violence, our District ladies studied, discussed, wrote supportive letters and postcards and were pleased to see that FINALLY the comprehensive Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015 Senate Bill #178 and Senate Bill #0003 the Domestic Violence Prevention Act were passed into law. The Federal legislation remains under Sub-Committee study. Horry County Solicitor Jimmy Richardson spoke eloquently at the Belin UMC Red Light: An Effort to Stop Human Trafficking forum in August and encouraged us to continue paying attention to full implementation of the new laws and to PUBLICALLY PRAISE good police work, effective prosecution, and helpful victim services with letters to our media! Our efforts toward the other focus of Quality Education for All of Our Children are spurred by the Supreme Court directive to the SC Legislature to develop CONCRETE steps to correct educational inequality pursuant to Abbeville vs. State of South Carolina. The work of the SCC Children in Poverty Task Force, the LARCUM Bishops Dialogue, The SC House Special Education Task Force were all delayed due to the extreme flooding, but information from those efforts will be distributed at the Marion District Unit Officers Training scheduled for January 9 th in Aynor. Our SCCUMW Legislative Day program, scheduled for February 16 th at Epworth should also include updated information about topics of interest to all women. Seating is very limited, so early registration is strongly recommended.

11 11 Notes from the District Treasurer Beth Davis Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! We need to get in our Remittance Forms before December 15th for the 4th quarter. I have to send in my report on December 15th and anything after the 15th will go in next year s report. We need to empty our treasury before the end of the year and send as much money as we can as a "love gift" to the District to go towards the Pledge to Mission. Local units should carry over only enough money in their treasury for the needs of the unit as they begin the new year. Our pledge Services take place in January and the units keeps a portion of each mission dollar to use for their administrative and membership development, sending the majority on to the district treasurer. When a unit holds a fundraiser for mission, the district should receive the greater portion of the profit, which would go to the Conference as an additional Pledge to Mission. We belong to an organization and operate by the guidelines, bylaws and standing rules of the United Methodist Women Organization. Reminder: Fourth Quarter Remittances are due December 15th. Make checks payable to Marion District UMW and send them to: Beth Davis 342 8th Avenue Aynor, SC Please note I have a new address: bedavis@sccoat.net Thanks for everyone helping make this year a great United Methodist Year and God Bless. 14 14 Report from Wallace Family Life Center Since our report in July there has been lots of activity at the Center. The changes in our summer program were very successful. 29 children were given special attention in math and reading. When tested at the end of the program they were up 35% from where they tested at the start of the program. Tutors continue to test them every two months. We have been able to give a lot of one on one instruction due to two high school interns who have logged in 100 hours. Another fun/education day when the fire department came. The Firemen taught about fire safety, let the children climb on the truck, and use the hose. They also gave each child a fire hat. We saw a drop in our After School program due to a conflicting program at the school. We started with 16 children and have increased to 19 as we continue to search for those who are not participating in the school program but who qualify for our program. All the children are learning to use computers. The younger ones doing story boards and the older ones working with power point. They are also learning how to use a dictionary properly and are being taught self-confidence skills and in depth thinking. We are so thankful that the Center had no damage from the rain/flooding. We were closed one day due to schools being closed. Annual Thanksgiving Dinner was Nov. 19 and Community Christmas dinner will be Dec. 6. We are asking churches to adopt a child for Operation Christmas child. You can call the Center for sizes if you are interested. We are very excited to have both management positions filled, (something we have not had consistently in a number of years,) and the quality of our programs reflect this. However, with quality comes added expense and giving has been significantly down this year and with two months still to go, it has become a concern. Units have been faithful in the past to remember the Center when they are spending down at year end. I am asking that you prayerfully consider this for Thank you for all you have done and will do to make your Center a success. Many children s lives have been touched and we will continue to serve you in the name of our Lord. Garvin Gilley, SCCUMW Board Representative Book: Author: Genre: A Girl Called Problem Katie Quirk Fiction A Girl Called Problem is a fictitious story which took place in two villages on the continent of Africa. The story is about a thirteen year old girl who was named Shida, whose name is interpreted to mean problem, and her cousin Grace. Shida was given this name because her father died shortly after she was born and her paternal grandmother felt that her mother was cursed; so she named the baby Shida and she named Shida s mother, Mother Shida. Shida s mother had moved to Litongo after she married Shida s father. When her mother-in-law drove her away from Litongo, she returned home and but name remained with her and everyone in her home town called her Mother Shida and her daughter was called Shida. As the story unfolds we witness the people of Njia Panda being requested by their president to move from the village of Njia Panda to a much larger and more developed village of Litongo. There is much confusion and differences of opinions. In Njia Panda everyone has plots of land where they can grow their own crops and raise their own farm animals. Moving to Litongo would mean that everyone would live in the village and their farms and animals would be located on the outskirts of the village. This created a problem for persons with large farms and many animals, but was a benefit for persons like Shida s mother who did not have anyone to help her with her farm work except Shida. It was also exciting to Shida and Grace because for the first time in their lives they would be able to go to school and learn to read. Although everything in the new village was not ideal, Shida and Grace were able to go to school. They experienced many problems in school and at home, but they were happy until the death of Grace s sister. They encountered other complications, but they did not want to return to Njia Panda. This book was especially interesting to me because it shows how important it was to Shida and Grace that they learn to read. I feel that this is a must read for any child who is not taking advantage of every opportunity to learn to read in a country where so many convinces are being made for them to learn. I recommend it to all teachers of youth. Please read the story and see how life unfolds for Shida and Grace in their new village. Claudette Hooker
