2 2 A Message From The President Happy Belated Valentine!! I want to begin by saying THANK YOU to Chapin United Methodist Women for hosting the 2018 Officer Training. There were 94 enthusiastic and energetic ladies with beautiful smiling faces in attendance! It is a wonderful feeling to have such a GREAT support TEAM!! Thank you to Linda Durant and team for the surprise lunch of soup and cornbread which was a delicious treat for the Executive Team. You are certainly appreciated for your kind hospitality! Hope that everyone had a lovely Valentine's Day!! It will be March by the time you are reading this article. I trust that you have already held your Pledge Service and Prayer and Self Denial Service or they are in their planning stages. Ladies I ask that you please be sure to complete the UMW membership census before March 31. We fell short last year for various reasons. Let s be diligent and get the numbers submitted. If you need assistance with the census reporting, please do not hesitate to call Maeward Belk, Membership, Nurture and Outreach Coordinator. She is our EXPERT! Thanks for your attention to this matter. Presidents and/or Secretaries please be sure to submit your 2018 slate of officers to Pat Gundler, District Secretary. We want to ensure that you are receiving all of the information that is distributed from the District and more importantly receive a copy of the Gleanings. 3 3 Message From Our Vice President Wow, this year is off to a great start for our United Methodist Women. We started the year with our annual Officer's Training on January 13, 2018 at Chapin UMC. Chapin did a wonderful job of hosting us and we received very positive feedback from all who attended. Coming up is our Day Apart Retreat" on March 3rd at Cayce UMC. As part of our day, we will learn how to make reusable feminine pads to be sent to girls in countries that have no access to feminine products. Come and join the fun. Also, coming up is our Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska on April Plan to attend and renew your spirit for doing God's work on this earth. Everyone who attends come back with a happy heart and a renewed focus on their relationship with God. Registration for both of these events is in this "Gleanings". Lots of events are happening this year for the Columbia District UMW. Please check the Calendar of events in this newsletter and mark your calendars. Each event is designed to help us grow in our roles as United Methodist Women and to nurture our spirits. I always come away from an event feeling blessed and humble. Being a part of this special "sisterhood" gives me opportunities to serve, to learn and to grow. Together we can make a difference!!! I attended the annual meeting of the Church Women United on Friday, January 26th at Brookland Banquet and Conference Center. Our guest speaker was Jen Thompson, the Executive Director of Lighthouse for Life. She shared information about human trafficking and the safe house that will open in March to house victims of human trafficking. A powerful program for all of us. On February 2, I attended the CWU Bible Study at Bethel United Methodist Church. Angela Ford Nelson was our leader and she did an outstanding job teaching us about how God made us and "He was very pleased". What a special day for all who attended. I have attached the Calendar for the Church Women United celebrations for this year. Please make plans to attend, I promise, you will not be disappointed. We are all busy, but are we too busy to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ??? I pray we make service a priority in our lives this year. There is much to be done and lots to learn. One of my favorite Bible verses is 1 Samuel 12:24 (Good News Translation). "Obey the Lord and serve him faithfully with all of your heart. Remember the great things he has done for you." Amen!! Your in Christ, Debra Schooler Columbia District Vice President

4 4 News From The Secretary As I was raking up some old winter leaves this week, I found this clump of daffodils in my yard. It was a pleasant surprise to see green leaves and buds, a promise of beautiful yellow flowers to come. God s creation is awesome and we are so blessed to live in a climate zone that allows for lovely green plants and bright yellow buds to brighten a winter s day. I have been working on the Columbia District Directory and have received several more officer lists from local units. If your unit has not sent me the names, addresses, address and phone number of your 4 elected officers, please sent it. I will add your information to the directory and send the revised form by to our Cluster Leaders who will forward it to you. I hope each unit has at least one member attending Legislative Day at Epworth. This is an election year and members need to be informed of laws, candidates, and issues to be voted on in November. Day Apart is March 3, 2018, at Cayce United Methodist Church. If you are registered to attend, remember you are asked to bring Sharpie markers, flannel, old towels, and scissors for a mission project. The next Executive Committee Meeting will be held at Shandon United Methodist Church, April 17, The meeting will begin at 6 pm with supper. The business meeting will immediately follow supper. You will find the registration forms for the 2018 Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska, April 27-28, 2018 in this issue. This a special time to meet with other SCCUMW to spend time in fellowship and worship. Hope to see many of you at the retreat. The United Methodist Women s Assembly will be held in Columbus, Ohio, May 18-20, It s not too late to register for this event.
