Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Day of Pentecost June 4, :30 a.m.
ZION EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH Firelands Lutherans Active in Mission (FLAMe) 503 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, OH (419) Pastor Eric L. Bodenstab Day of Pentecost Carolyn Steinfeldt, AiM, Director of Faith Formation June 4, :30 a.m. Worship Today s festival derives its name from the Jewish festival of Pentecost, observed fifty days after Passover. On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Holy Spirit as the power of God among us that heals, forgives, inspires, and unites. In the reading from Acts, images of wind and fire describe the Spirit poured out on disciples of all nations. In John s gospel the risen Christ breathes the Spirit on his followers on Easter evening. In the one Spirit we are baptized into one body, and at the Lord s table the Spirit unites us for witness in the world. In worship today we welcome St. Mary's Parish Choir as they join our Senior Choir to enhance our worship as we seek to live into the ecumenical ideals that have come out of the Lutheran-Roman Catholic Dialogue associated with the Reformation 500 celebrations. At the 8:00 service, we recognized individuals who have participated in the choral ministry of this congregation for significant periods of years. At the 10:30 service, we will welcome Erin and Althea Bodenstab, Mickenzie Criswell, Walter & Deborah Kaufmann into membership through baptism and affirmation of faith. ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING PRELUDE: Christ Be Our Light Bernedette Farrell St. Mary s Parish Choir (please stand, if able) 2

CANTICLE OF PRAISE PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. O God, on this day you open the hearts of your faithful people by sending into us your Holy Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (please be seated) 5
WORD FIRST READING: Acts 2:1-21 page 992 in the pew Bible Pentecost was a Jewish harvest festival that marked the fiftieth day after Passover. Luke portrays the Holy Spirit being poured out upon the disciples before the gathered and astonished people assembled in Jerusalem for the festival. Filled with the Spirit, the disciples were able to witness to the power of Christ s resurrection. The reading concludes; The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM The Old Hundredth Psalm Tune Ralph Vaughn Williams Introduction: Verse 1: Verse 2: Verse 3: Verse 4: Interlude: Verse 5: Organ and Trumpets Choir, Congregation, Organ, and Trumpets All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell, Come ye before him, and rejoice. Choir, Congregation, and Organ The Lord, ye know, is God indeed, Without our aid he did us make; We are his folk, he doth us feed, And for his sheep he doth us take. Choir only and Trumpet descant Choir only Organ and Trumpets Choir, Congregation, Organ and Trumpets To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, The God whom heaven and earth adore, From men and from the angel host Be praise and glory evermore. 6
SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13 page 1046 in the pew Bible Paul is helping the Corinthians understand the relationship between our God-given unity and Spiritcreated diversity. The Spirit creates the unity of faith and gives all Christians diverse gifts for the common benefit of all. We need one another s diverse spiritual gifts, because the same Spirit has given them to each person for the common good. The reading concludes; The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (please stand, if able for the Gospel) GOSPEL ACCLAIMATION Veni Sancte Spiritus/Holy Spirit, Come to Us The assembly stands to welcome the gospel. The congregation and choir sing these measures repeatedly while the cantor sings verses. Feel free to sing in either English or Latin, or even to switch between them. The Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: John 20:19-23 page 989 in the pew Bible The risen Jesus appears to his disciples, offering them a benediction, a commission, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. The reading concludes; This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (please be seated) SERMON Silence for reflection follows the sermon. The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song. 7
HYMN OF THE DAY: Alleluia! Sing to Jesus arr. by Robert Hobby Combined Choirs, Congregation, Organ, & Brass Introduction: Brass & Organ Verse 1: Congregation, Unison Choir, Brass, & Organ Alleluia! Sing to Jesus! His the scepter, His the throne; Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone. Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion Thunder like a mighty flood: Jesus out of every nation has redeemed us by his blood. Verse 2: Congregation, Choir, Brass & Organ Alleluia! Not as orphans are we left in sorrow now; Alleluia! He is near us; faith believes, nor questions how. Though the cloud from sight received him when the forty days were o er, Shall our hearts forget his promise: I am with you evermore? Verse 3: Interlude: Choir & Organ Brass & Organ Verse 4: Congregation, Choir, Brass & Organ Alleluia! King eternal, you the Lord of lords we own; Alleluia! Born of Mary, earth your footstool, heav n your throne. You within the veil have entered, robed in flesh, our great high priest; Here on earth both priest and victim in the Eucharistic feast. HOLY BAPTISM AND RECEPTION OF MEMBERS BY AFFIRMATION OF FAITH PRESENTATION Candidates for baptism, sponsors, and parents gather with the ministers at the font. Those making affirmation also gather with the ministers at the font. The assembly is seated. The presiding minister may address the assembly in these or similar words: In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. Sponsors for each candidate, in turn, present the candidates: 8
I present Althea Grace Bodenstab for baptism. The presiding minister addresses parents or others who bring for baptism children who are not able to answer for themselves: Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have your child baptized into Christ? Response: I do. As you bring your child to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with her among God's faithful people, bring her to the word of God and the holy supper, teach her the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in her hands the holy scriptures, and nurture her in faith and prayer, so that your child may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help your child grow in the Christian faith and life? Response: I do. The presiding minister addresses sponsors: Sponsors, do you promise to nurture this person in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God's Spirit, and to help them live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? Response: I do. The presiding minister addresses the assembly: People of God, do you promise to support Althea and pray for her in her new life in Christ? We do. Dear friends, we give thanks for the gift of baptism and for these people, one with us in the body of Christ, who are making public affirmation of their baptism. Those making affirmation are presented by a sponsor or another representative of the congregation: I present Erin Bodenstab, Mickenzie Criswell, Deborah Kaufman & Walter Kaufmann who desire to make public affirmation of their baptism. The presiding minister may continue with prayer. Let us pray. Merciful God, we thank you for these sisters and brothers, whom you have made your own by water and the Word in baptism. You have called them to yourself, enlightened them with the gifts of your Spirit, and nourished them in the community of faith. Uphold your servants in the gifts and promises of baptism, and unite the hearts of all whom you have brought to new birth. We ask this in the name of Christ. 9
The assembly stands. PROFESSION OF FAITH The presiding minister addresses candidates for baptism as well as the parents and sponsors of young children. The assembly may join in the responses. I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? Response: I renounce them. Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? Response: I renounce them. Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? Response: I renounce them. The presiding minister addresses the candidates and the assembly. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AFFIRMATION The presiding minister addresses those making public affirmation of baptism. You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism: to live among God s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? Each person responds: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. The minister addresses the assembly. 10
People of God, do you promise to support these sisters and brothers and pray for them in their life in Christ? We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. Those making affirmation may kneel. The presiding minister prays for God s blessing. Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give us new birth, cleanse us from sin, and raise us to eternal life. The blessing may be repeated for each person. The minister may lay both hands on the head of the person and say: Stir up in name the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Those making public affirmation stand and face the assembly. A representative of the congregation addresses the assembly. Let us rejoice with these sisters and brothers in Christ. We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world. THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT Water may be poured into the font before or during the thanksgiving. At the font, the presiding minister begins the thanksgiving: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus' death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to live in you. Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. 11
The assembly may be seated. BAPTISM Althea Grace Bodenstab, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. (Sing through twice) The presiding minister continues: Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Althea with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. The presiding minister marks the sign of the cross on the forehead of each of the baptized. Oil prepared for this purpose may be used. As the sign of the cross is made, the minister says: Althea, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. 12
WELCOME A lighted candle may be given to each of the newly baptized (to a sponsor of a young child) as a representative of the congregation says: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. The ministers and the baptismal group face the assembly. A representative of the congregation leads the assembly in the welcome. Let us welcome the newly baptized. We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative and redeeming word to all the world. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Rejoicing in the risen life of Christ, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. Each petition ends: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ s peace, and may say, Peace be with you, or similar words. Afterward, the assembly is seated. OFFERING MUSIC: God Be In My Head John Rutter St. Mary's Parish Choir The assembly stands. 13
