From your President SEV-EN-TEEN INCHES! In Nashville, Tennessee, during the first week of January, 1996, more than 4,000 baseball coaches descended upon the Opryland Hotel for the 52nd annual ABCA's convention. While I waited in line to register with the hotel staff, I heard other veteran coaches rumbling about the lineup of speakers scheduled to present during the weekend. One name, in particular, kept resurfacing, always with the same sentiment John Scolinos is here? Oh, man, worth every penny of my airfare. Who is John Scolinos, I wondered. No matter; I was just happy to be there. In 1996, Coach Scolinos was 78 years old and five years retired from a college coaching career that began in He shuffled to the stage to an impressive standing ovation, wearing dark polyester pants, a light blue shirt, and a string around his neck from which home plate hung a full-sized, stark-white home plate. Seriously, I wondered, who is this guy? The reason I stand before you today is to share with you baseball people what I ve learned in my life, what I ve learned about home plate in my 78 years. Several hands went up when Scolinos asked how many Little League coaches were in the room. Do you know how wide home plate is in Little League? After a pause, someone offered, Seventeen inches?, more of a question than answer. That s right, he said. How about in Babe Ruth s day? Any Babe Ruth coaches in the house? Another long pause. Seventeen inches? a guess from another reluctant coach. That s right, said Scolinos. Now, how many high school coaches do we have in the room? Hundreds of hands shot up, as the pattern began to appear. How wide is home plate in high school baseball? Seventeen inches, they said, sounding more confident. After speaking for twenty-five minutes, not once mentioning the prop hanging around his neck, Coach Scolinos appeared to notice the snickering among some of the coaches. Even those who knew Coach Scolinos had to wonder exactly where he was going with this, or if he had simply forgotten about home plate since he d gotten on stage. Then, finally You re probably all wondering why I m wearing home plate around my neck, he said, his voice growing irascible. I laughed along with the others, acknowledging the possibility. I may be old, but I m not crazy. You re right! Scolinos barked. And you college coaches, how wide is home plate in college? Seventeen inches! we said, in unison. Any Minor League coaches here? How wide is home plate in pro ball?... Seventeen inches! RIGHT! And in the Major Leagues, how wide home plate is in the Major Leagues? Seventeen inches! The Messengers meet at Ryan s Steak House in Conroe every third Tuesday at 7:00 PM meeting time. Come early for food and fellowship. Ryan s Steakhouse is located at 1413 N. Loop 336 next to Wal-Mart.
P a ge 2 T h e Messengers M a r c h A p ri l 2017 SEV-EN-TEEN INCHES! he confirmed, his voice bellowing off the walls. And what do they do with a Big League pitcher who can t throw the ball over seventeen inches? Pause. They send him to Pocatello! he hollered, drawing raucous laughter. What they don t do is this: they don t say, Ah, that s okay, Jimmy. You can t hit a seventeen-inch target? We ll make it eighteen inches or nineteen inches. We ll make it twenty inches so you have a better chance of hitting it. If you can t hit that, let us know so we can make it wider still, say twenty-five inches.' Pause. Coaches pause, " what do we do when our best player shows up late to practice? When our team rules forbid facial hair and a guy shows up unshaven? What if he gets caught drinking? Do we hold him accountable? Or do we change the rules to fit him? Do we widen home plate? The chuckles gradually faded as four thousand coaches grew quiet, the fog lifting as the old coach s message began to unfold. He turned the plate toward himself and, using a Sharpie, began to draw something. When he turned it toward the crowd, point up, a house was revealed, complete with a freshly drawn door and two windows. This is the problem in our homes today. With our marriages, with the way we parent our kids. With our discipline. We don t teach accountability to our kids, and there is no consequence for failing to meet standards. We widen the plate! Pause. Then, to the point at the top of the house he added a small American flag. This is the problem in our schools today. The quality of our education is going downhill fast and teachers have been stripped of the tools they need to be successful, and to educate and discipline our young people. We are allowing others to widen home plate! Where is that getting us? Silence. He replaced the flag with a Cross. And this is the problem in the Church, where powerful people in positions of authority have taken advantage of young children, only to have such an atrocity swept under the rug for years. Our church leaders are widening home plate for themselves! And we allow it. And the same is true with our government. Our so-called representatives make rules for us that don t apply to themselves. They take bribes from lobbyists and foreign countries. They no longer serve us. And we allow them to widen home plate and we see our country falling into a dark abyss while we watch. I was amazed. At a baseball convention where I expected to learn something about curve balls and bunting and how to run better practices, I had learned something far more valuable. From an old man with home plate strung around his neck, I had learned something about life, about myself, about my own weaknesses and about my responsibilities as a leader. I had to hold myself and others accountable to that which I knew to be right, lest our families, our faith, and our society continue down an undesirable path. If I am lucky, Coach Scolinos concluded, you will remember one thing from this old coach today. It is this: if we fail to hold ourselves to a higher standard, a standard of what we know to be right; if we fail to hold our spouses and our children to the same standards, if we are unwilling or unable to provide a consequence when they do not meet the standard; and if our schools & churches & our government fail to hold themselves accountable to those they serve, there is but one thing to look forward to With that, he held home plate in front of his chest, turned it around, and revealed its dark black backside, dark days ahead. Coach Scolinos died in 2009 at the age of 91, but not before touching the lives of hundreds of players and coaches, including mine. Meeting him at my first ABCA convention kept me returning year after year, looking for similar wisdom and inspiration from other coaches. He is the best clinic speaker the ABCA has ever known because he was so much more than a baseball coach. His message was clear: Coaches, keep your players no matter how good they are your own children, your churches, your government, and most of all, keep yourself at seventeen inches." And this my friends is what our country has become and what is wrong with it today, and how to fix it. "Don't widen the plate." An absolutely great speech!
P a ge 3 T h e Messengers M a r c h A p ri l 2017 From your Chaplain VICTORY IN JESUS It is always exciting when you switch to a different or newer motorcycle. Out with the old and in with the new. Soon the new will be old again. These bikes of ours are tools for the kingdom and when they need to be replaced and upgraded its to His glory that we still are able to ride. I have over the years ridden just about every kind of make and model of bike out there. From a motorized skateboard to a Boss Hoss motorcycle you can get used to anything if you ride it long enough, I guess. God is not concerned in what you ride but how you ride. Do you ride as if the world is watching you? Are you quick and ready to give an account of the hope that is in Christ Jesus? When God is trying to do a new thing in our lives we try to hold on to the old because it is more comfortable and familiar, instead of casting all your cares upon Him. We don t know what we are missing until we let go of what we are used to. Reckless abandonment in Christ should be the only way for the Christian biker. Jesus (the son of God) was a blue collar worker. He wasn t afraid to get a little dirty at times. When we take more time in shining chrome on our bikes than we do in praying for the lost souls we are assigned to, we are just a patch wearer not a patch bearer. When we interact and mingle with people we don t know and are strange to us we are doing the ministry of our Lord. Sharing with the biker community and all things biker is why I joined the CMA. This April we have a great opportunity to fellowship and serve at the Somerville Rally. We all work hard and on weekends we want to pamper ourselves because after all we deserve a break, we surely are entitled. I found out one thing.when we serve and minister to others, God pampers us with His Blessing, and is always much better. In His Grace, Joe B.
P a ge 4 T h e Messengers M a r c h A p ri l 2017 From your Secretary... Messengers, I want to start out by thanking all of you Messengers for your continued commitment to the ministry of CMA and especially the outreach of this chapter. We are truly blessed by God as an active and vibrant chapter and I give all the glory to God for His guiding hands on both the leadership and membership as we seek His will for the chapter. We continue to grow as a chapter and God is bringing in new Messengers with new ideas and a desire to serve. Praise Him for His blessings. I know we all have much going on in our personal lives and I speak from experience when I say it is sometimes difficult to juggle the many commitments we have and still get things accomplished. It would be much easier to handle life if it happened on a consistent schedule, but life doesn t always happen that way. That is not to say we should not plan according to a schedule (calendar) but on a personal level, our plans don t always lineup with Gods so we must be conscious of His will for our lives and adjust. The chapter calendar has been filling up lately and it is apparent that we are getting busier as the year progresses. Couple that with the greater than normal temperatures lately and you see the increase in activity as riding season appears to have arrived early. Our chapter has been very active this last Quarter (yes, we are at the end of quarter , time is flying by) and for the most part, we have been blessed with great chapter participation in our calendar events. Here are the results so far but we are not done yet: We have had a Membership participation count of 154 in 24 events that resulted in 1 salvation and 121 other ministry opportunities. Remember this is just an overview and not the complete report of all the chapter has done this quarter. God is good and we are on track for another great quarter for chapter activity. Thank you all for your commitment to Christ Jesus and the ministry He has for this chapter. We have a lot on the calendar coming up in the next few months. This includes the Run for the Son ride and BBQ on May 6 th. Be sure to sign up at the website and don t forget to enter your items for the Run for the Son Silent Auction. We are going to have the great praise band Acts of Worship providing the live music at the BBQ, and we will also be presenting the hand-made quilt that has our CMA logo on it. You can purchase the raffle tickets from Karla Darden at the next chapter meeting so bring some cash so that you can get some tickets. They are $5 each or 3 for $10. You will also be able to buy tickets the day of the ride on May 6 th. Messengers! Links to Descriptions, Instructions and Directions to everything I have just described, from Chapter Event Schedule (Calendar), the Silent Auction and this Newsletter can be found at the Newsletter download Site: If you want to: Check what events are coming up. Enter an Item into the Silent Auction. Check out what is in the Silent Auction. Sign up for the Run for the Son ride and BBQ. Sign up for an upcoming event as a volunteer. Again, I want to thank everyone for your servant heart and commitment to the cause and ministry of Christ Jesus through HIS Chapter of CMA. God bless you! Your Secretary, Gary Teel
P a ge 5 T h e Messengers M a r c h A p ri l 2017 God created the dog and said: "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this I will give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?" And God said that it was good. On the second day, God created the monkey and said, Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span." The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That s a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?" And God again said that it was good. On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer s family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years." The cow said That's kind of hard to want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?" And God agreed it was good. On the fourth day, God created humans and said, Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years." But the human said, Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?" "Okay," said God, "You asked for it." So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. Life has now been explained to you. There is no need to thank me for this valuable information. I'm doing it as a public service. If you are looking for me I will be on the front porch!
