A letter from our President, Diana Clayton Dear Shasta Miners and Prospectors and Friends: July was a very busy month for many of us, with camping, fishing, prospecting and metal detecting. I hope many of you will participate in the find of the month contest at the August 17 meeting. At the July meeting, the stories about the amazing finds presented by 5 members were extremely educational and fun to experience their excitement on Diana Clayton finding the treasures. The metal detecting hunt at the July 2 day outing had 19 participants. All found coins. Mike Russell found the coin marked for the Gold Nugget. It wasn t easy. Several people detected the same spot before him and ignored some of the targets thinking they were pull tabs from cans. It was very much fun. Thank you to the volunteers who did not participate in the hunt, and who were able to hide coins in the darkness of the night. The Douglass City R.V. park was overflowing with member participation. She gave it to me, which will go in the garden. Thank you April. We get to do a metal detecting hunt again, $75 in marked coins will be available for the hunt at the August 19 picnic. The hunt is early and is only an hour long. Be sure to check the flyer for details. Something new is added to events for the August 19 annual picnic and that is a bingo cake walk. See flyer for details. Shasta Miners and Prospectors Association made the news in San Francisco Chronical referred as SF Gate news.. The subject: is there a mini gold rush going on in Northern California. The story was picked by CBS and NBC both who called us again. I hope you had a chance to read the story if not, google Mini Gold Rush Northern California. Congrats to Woody for receiving the Miner of the Month Award this month, He certainly earned it. Thank you. The annual July outing was so successful, some called it awesome and joined the Association right on the spot. Again thank you to all the volunteers, there were many, who helped make the outing so awesome for so many members. No news on the legislation issues: However, much behind the scenes work is being done to bring the French Gulch Mining District back to life and for a very important reason for the future of mining. Mike Russell will give a brief update on this at the August 17 meeting. Randy and Chris Jones were very involved the SMPA and good friends to many. I spoke with Chris and she is planning to have Celebration of Life Memorial some time in early October when she gets back from Texas. IN MEMORY Randy Jones, long time member of SMPA, and held the position of Metal Detecting Chairman for years, passed away July 27, 2017 at Mercy Hospital. Randy was a great guy and a friend to many. Chris, our prayers are with you and we are deeply sorry for your tremendous loss of a very special and wonderful man. Rest in peace Randy. We will truly miss him he will always be in our memories. 6 Hello Fellow Miners, Shasta Miners and Prospectors Association (SMPA) August 2017 Pg. 6 The July outing in Douglas City went well! Had a few glitches but all and all it was fun and enjoyable for all. I know my Grandkids had a lot of fun. Congratulations to all who won the contests at the outing. I am sad to learn of the a former member, Randy Jones, he will be missed and remembered by all who knew him. My prayer s are with Chris and her family. God Bless! I do look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting on August 17th. Donna Davis ( ) d j d _ y a h o o. com Next on our agenda is the Club Picnic! Donna Davis, Vice President GUIDED METAL DETECTING OUTINGS: Usually occur on the Second Saturday morning after the regular scheduled meeting. The location of the hunt is announced at the general meeting. If you are unable to attend the meeting please contact Bill Doyle, Metal Detecting Chair. doylewt@aol.com or call (530) July Metal Detector Outing The June hunt at Anderson Fairgrounds resulted in a few of our members recovering some coinage. Three of us went to the venue about 5:30 am and we had a good start on the available targets. The night hunt at the Redding Convention Center following the annual fireworks show was attended by several members and we all went home with some change in our pockets. Thanks to Val & Nancy Smalley that arrived at the venue in the afternoon hours we had a shady area and water to drink while we awaited the fireworks to conclude. The annual outing at Douglas City Campground was well attended despite the heat, and Mike Russell won the day with his discovery of the coin that netted a gold nugget. Congratulations Mike. Sorry to report the passing of our friend and former Metal Detecting Chairman, Randall (Randy) Jones. Randy departed us on Thursday, July 27 th at the Mercy Medical Center. Randy was a great and courageous guy and he will be greatly missed. Remember to keep hydrated during these hot days and be aware of the rattlesnakes. See you at the picnic on August 19 th at, KC Grove, Anderson River Park.
