K-W NAVAL ASSOCIATION JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH 2016 Shipmates, I will take this opportunity to wish all a Happy and Healthy The club is starting the year on a positive note financially and going forward business seems to be holding, some major costs arrive at this time of year in the form of insurance premiums but we are in shape to handle those and with our member support should continue to grow. Condolences to the Boehm and Babcock families on the passing of Lillian Boehm and Marilyn Babcock, both ladies dedicated a lot of time to the club over the years and they will be missed and not forgotten. There are a number of functions coming up starting with the Walter Harvey Shuffleboard Tournament, check the calendar for other events. This is our year to host the RCNA Sports Day, see Gord Moore if you are interested in helping out with the days events, volunteers are required and it would be nice to have that area filled early! The Battle of the Atlantic Banquet is in the planning stages and hope it will be well attended. Thanks to Terri Leigh for juggling all the different positions she has doing and especially the work on fine tuning the rental process, we have had some booking issues in the past and the new system should deal with those kind of issues. There are some functions we do over the year which could not happen without the help and dedication of member volunteers, if you think you can help with any function make your intentions known to the executive and they can be 2

passed on to the appropriate people at our mixed executive planning meetings. Thanks to all that have contributed to the well being of the KWNA over the past year(s) and hopefully we can count on your help going forward. Come out and support your club! PRESIDENT MIKE EDWARDS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT Happy New Year everyone! I hope that each of you had a fantastic holiday season and a good start to the I appreciate everyone's patience as I work on doing several jobs around the club simultaneously. Please know that in addition to this I have a full time job as well as my career with in the Reserves so sometimes things may not happen as quickly as we'd like. For those of you who have shown patience and understanding, thank you. The rental hall has been coming along well and I thank those club members who have supported the club by using it for some of their family events! It's great to see the support. We've moved to a new method of doing things in that the bartenders no longer look after rental hall contracts. This has proven to be beneficial in that we are now able to dedicate time to the prospective renter in a way that was previously not possible while the bartenders were trying to do their primary job at the same time. This has lead to less confusion, more information and greater satisfaction for the renter which translates into better feedback on our behalf! With respect to things around the club room, I wish to gently remind members that when they took their oath of membership, they took on the responsibility good conduct within the walls of our club. Unfortunately there have been some incidents lately that have cause great displeasure amongst our members which serves as a reminder that at ALL TIMES we have an obligation to treat others with the utmost respect and be welcoming to those whom enter our club and their guests. At no time should someone be made to feel unwelcome, 3

especially when it is a member directing it towards someone else, member or guest. If you cannot do that, then you need to reconsider being a member! Thank you to everyone who joined us for the potluck before Christmas. It was once again well attended, and many friends and family were brought in to join us. As well, thank you so much to John Wastell who was a busy man throughout the holiday season! In particular, his help with the Ladies Auxiliary Christmas Dinner and for his (and his wife Charlene's) organizing of the annual Kids Christmas party. Your effort and dedication to the club is certainly appreciated from the bottom of my heart! The next event for me will be the Battle of the Atlantic Banquet at the end of April which will be talked about more in the next Log. Thank you to those who have shown support towards my efforts here at the club. I appreciate your kind words of encouragement at a time which makes each day a wee bit easier to handle! EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT TERRI-LEIGH SAUNDERS THE CREW If you haven't picked up your 2016 Membership card yet YOUR LATE! But hey, you can still purchase your 2016 membership card at the bar albeit with the $5.00 LATE FEE until the end of January. If you are later than that you will have to speak with me. The Early Bird draw #1 winner was Murray Goodwin! The Early Bird draw #2 winner was Al Dietrich! Congratulations to both winners! MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR MIKE TUROS 4

Pomp and Circumstances I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of you who came out and paraded during all the events surrounding this years Remembrance Day ceremonies. Wreaths were laid at the following locations: Elmira cenotaph The Canadian Veterans' Memorial Kitchener cenotaph Waterloo cenotaph Mount Hope Cemetery Parkview Cemetery Polish Remembrance ceremonies German War Graves The good news... no parades until May which will be the Battle of the Atlantic. Information on that will follow. MASTER-AT-ARMS JOHN COXON SICK AND VISITING Things were pretty quiet for a while as everyone seemed to be ok. I hears at the B. S. Table one day that Rick Hall had a tumble in the club room and was in K/W hospital. I think it happened about 4 or 5 days before I knew. I've been up to see him on three occasions now and the last time, yesterday for a short visit. The first couple of times they had not had him out of bed and he was not a happy camper. Yesterday he told me they had found his problem and he is now on a liquid diet to help his recovery. He felt a lot better about it. I hope things go well for him. I'll call him after Christmas. I had been down to see Brian Miller, Jan Miller and Bob Jordan on several occasions since the lat Log. I enjoyed a good conversation again with Brian and he is now on solid foods once again, so that is a good sign. 5

I went on Saturday December 20th to visit Jan Miller at Forest Heights. I found her in good spirits and a very nice hair-do for Christmas. I came up behind her and knew it was her. It was good to see her up and about again. I said I would visit again after Christmas. I Was over to visit Bob Jordan this morning (Dec 21st) I got him in the morning and we had a good visit. He says he prefers my wife over me. I understood most of his words which are always good to hear. He thanked me for bringing the Log when I visited him. I told him his Leafs won a game the other night, that brought a smile to his face. I will call on him again. We went down to see Mamie Stinchcombe about a week before the Ladies Christmas Dinner and she was quite concerned about being there. Turns out she and I had a dance when the meal was over. It's always good to have a live band, especially Big Band music which is what I was brought up on in my teen years. I had a nice visit with her. I have been up to New Hamburg to visit with Gord Campbell on two occasions since the last Log. It is always a nice visit with Gord and his wife, they are a very fine couple. He has a few health problems but he is always up-beat. He says he taking one day at a time. He says to say hello to the gang and that he is doing OK. We then went for some very old cheddar. It did not taste too old but it was OK. I phoned Gord before our executive meeting in January. He is having a lot of trouble now as his cancer is acting up and now affecting his bones. He's getting a blood transfusion and more chemo. I think he comes to K-W Hospital cancer centre for these treatments. Pat Doyle had mentioned his brother John has recovered well after his health issues. Talking about Big Band, My hero in my teens was Old Blue Eyes, The Chairman Of The Board, Sinatra. We had lots in common as I think I was as skinny as he was at that time. He put on some later, but not me. I could go on, But anyway, I watched a lot of his shows and movies celebrating his 100th birthday. Oh well, That's it for now, everyone else seems OK. SICK & VISITING DIRECTOR DON BALCARAS 6

EXECUTIVE MEETING GENERAL MEETTING Thursday January 7, :00 PM Thursday February 4, :00 PM Thursday March 3, :00 PM Wednesday January 13, :30 PM Wednesday February 10, :30 PM Wednesday March 9, :30 PM LADIES AUXILIARY SICK AND VISITING On Wednesday, November 18th, I attended the memorial service at Henry Walser Funeral Home for Marilyn Babcock, and was pleased to see the nice turout form our KWNA members there, and also the Branch 530 Ladies Auxiliary. It was a very nice funeral service that was well attended. I was unable to attend the memorial service for Lillian Boehm on Saturday, December 5th at Henry Walser Funeral Home. She would always say hello with a big smile. I heard that Lillian would do all the baking years ago for our Ladies Auxiliary for the different functions which took placeat the Navy Club. These two lovely ladies, Marilyn and Lillian, will be missed. There has been no change in Jan Miller's condition. Dorothy McHuge is at Parkwood Suites, 720 New Hampshire St. in Waterloo across from Rim Park. Please take ten minutes of your time and pray for Jan and Dorothy who are in their nursing homes.
