3 PRESIDENT S REPORT Comrades, Another month as gone by and the leaves on the trees are changing as we are welcoming the fall season. Come by your legion and enjoy some of the dine-ins that are happening this fall and also take in some of the other important events that are going on. The calendars list the main events and ads for some of the events are contained in this bulletin One upcoming event that is really important to our legion is the Ladies Auxiliary s 60th anniversary dinner which is on the 13th of October, from my years involved in the legion I've seen the countless hours the ladies put in to make numerous events possible. Please say thanks to any of them you meet or talk to, because they are a great part of our legion. As everyone says behind every good man there is a great woman and that's what i would like to commend our ladies for. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our newest Bar Steward, Jean Leggett. Please join me in welcoming her to the branch! In closing we can always use your help at some of the events, so if you can help please call the branch and leave your number and we will call back. 4 Ladies Auxiliary President s Report: Welcome to a new year! I am very happy to represent the Ladies Auxiliary as their new President. Let s all work together and make this a successful year! This year is the Callander Ladies Auxiliary 60th Anniversary. We will be hosting an event to celebrate on Saturday, October 13th with a dinner and light entertainment. Tickets are on sale at the bar at the cost of $15 per person. We look forward to seeing you there to celebrate with us. All are welcome. Three members went to the LA conference in Whitby, Ontario, in September and had a good education. By-laws were past and we will be looking at our bylaws in the near future. Brenda Lalonde (Helene Lariviere s daughter) Margaret Prudhomme Kim Cameron Yours in Comradeship Laura Ranger Sports Officer: Helene Lariviere, Diane Bellaire, Irene Lewis and Claire Larochelle made up our one lone team that participated in the Zone Euchre level held in Sundridge on September 22. They were mercilessly defeated by the cards. Our standing in the tournament was 8th place. Nonetheless we did enjoy a good lunch, comradeship and sportsmanship. 6 Banquets A Point of Interest: All volunteers are welcome including students that need the volunteer hours or membership status. There is nowhere in our by-laws that states one has to be a member to volunteer. This is good public relations and allows and encourages those persons to become members when they are able to do so. It also falls in line with our mandate of serving and including not only our members but also the community at large. What greater example and mentorship could there be than working along side each other for the betterment of all? With this in mind, please contact our volunteer coordinator Helen Turgeon at to volunteer. Your volunteerism would be greatly appreciated with the Christmas holiday banquets fast approaching. 7 SICK AND VISITING With great regret we ve lost a member, Bud Lawrence. Member Bruce Rogers is at the North Bay Regional Health Centre with pneumonia and congestive heart failure. We wish him the best. We have a few members at home recuperating. Brent Coleman is coming along well. Joyce Powel is going for surgery on October 1. Don Bickerton is coming along quite well as is Frank Rading. 14 Seniors Centre The Seniors Centre is located in the Callander Legion and is open to all seniors living in the community. The Centre is open seven days a week in conjunction with the branch s Bar hours. The Centre hosts a library with a selection of books for loan, a television with DVD player for your favorite movies as well as a shuffleboard table and comfy chairs. On the third Wednesday of each month the VON holds a Foot Care Clinic in the Seniors Centre from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon. Appointments can be made by contacting the North Bay branch of the VON at The cost is $25.00 per visit however, if you reside within the Municipality of Callander, $12.00 is paid on your behalf through the grants from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) and the municipality. Exercise classes are held every Monday morning at 9:00 am and Yoga classes are held every Friday morning at 9:00 am. These classes are open to all seniors in the Municipality of Callander. Under the umbrella of the Legion there is an Over 55 Club that holds regular weekly events for persons aged 50 and up. Funding in part is provided to the Over 55 Club from subsidies received from the MOHLTC and the Municipality. Card games are held every Monday and Wednesday at 1:00 pm. Darts is held on Wednesdays at 1:30 pm and Shuffleboard is played on Friday at 1:00 pm. For more information about these events or about becoming a member of the Over 55 Club, please contact Jenny Vautour at Please note, there is no requirement to be a member of The Royal Canadian Legion or the Over 55 Club to participate in any Seniors Centre activities, including the VON Foot Clinic.
