K-W NAVAL ASSOCIATION FALL 2016 Shipmates, welcome to fall and all the upcoming seasonal events that have been planned. The RCNA Annual General Meeting was held at our facility at the end of September, a downscaled version with the National Executive and Divisional VP's attending to try and conserve funds. The meeting went well with discussions on a tagging day, date to be decided, to raise awareness of the Naval Community Nationaly, lots of bugs to be worked out but hopefully we can have things in place for a date in June Creig, VP Alberta was appointed Vice President Membership to replace Shipmate John Chapman. The RCNA Sports Day was held the week prior to the AGM and was well attended. Congrats to Shipmate Gord Moore for an excellent job in running his first Sports Day, Great Job Gord. Congrats also to the KWNA participants who came away with some of the hardware, not quite enough to grab the Cock of the Walk, but there is always next year in Woodstock to try again. Thanks to all that participated in events on behalf of the club and to all the volunteers that made the day a success. November has a number of events for Remembrance to participate in, see the Master at Arms Report for dates and times. Special Events report also outlines upcoming activities, mark the dates and plan on participating. Condolences go out to the family of Gord Campbell, a long time member of the KWNA who fought a long battle with cancer, We Will Remember Him! Thank you to our grounds care takers, Beryle, Johnny Love, Anne and Brett for keeping things presentable over the summer and to Terri Leigh for the October decorations, nice touch. 2

Business has been good over the year and have us in a reasonable financial position heading into the heavy bill months ahead dealing with ever increasing costs of Utilities, Insurance and maintenance of an older building. With the help of our members and guests participating in events we will continue to show a positive cash flow. In closing I would like to take this opportunity to wish all a Very Merry Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year! Looking forward to seeing you at YOUR CLUB. PRESIDENT MIKE EDWARDS VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT Well...things in my neck of the woods are coming along smoothly for the most part. Payroll is getting done, bartenders have their schedules and the rental hall seems to be doing OK. We've been getting some new folks in, and some return customers. We're always looking for business so please do pass along my info for anyone who might be looking at renting the hall. We've also reviewed our rental hall prices and have changed things a bit in the hopes of drawing new business. In a joint effort with the Ladies Auxiliary, we've also produced an updated catering menu. Please see the page in the log regarding rental hall information for more details! After Christmas I will be taking a bit of time away to regenerate and spend some time with my loved ones. With the new year beginning, I would encourage each of you to do the same. While I will still be available to deal with the rental hall, my physical presence will be somewhat less. On behalf of Jon and I, wish each of you a safe, and joyous holiday season. I wish each of you all the best in 2017 and thank you for your support over the past year. Cheers VICE PRESIDENT TERRI-LEIGH SAUNDERS 3

SICK AND VISITING Another long-time member has passed away since the last log. Our condolences to the family of Gord Campbell who passed away on September 17, I ve had many a good visit with Gord and Olive over the last couple of years. I did not know Gord when he was not ill and coming to the club a couple of years ago and someone mentioned The gang from New Hamburg just came in. Someone had mentioned to me that Gord Campbell was having health problems so I went over and introduced myself and we had a good chat about his illness. Further on I visited with him quite often. I always had a very good visit. He never complained. He used to say that it s One day at a time. I visited Gord when he was at K-W Hospital when he was there and had a brief talk with Olive. Gord was in a lot of pain. She told him that I was there He had a little smile and closed his eyes to rest some more. He passed away a few days later. I did not know that he was at Lisaard House. I attended the funeral, it was a very nice service. I hope to drop in on Olive in the near future. I have been in touch with Dave Heffernan from time to time by phone. I called him the other day, he says he s doing OK but therapy is not as god as he hoped it would be. He is recuperating from a stroke that he had in October. I visited him while he was in Freeport Hospital. He had also been in St. Mary s but I was unaware of that. The rest of my report is visits to Bob Jorden (not much change) and Brian Miller (Robes are no longer needed for visits). Sorry I missed him at the Club. He said he had a good visit. The one General Meeting that I had to miss. I also had a short visit with Jan Miller, no change. She said she was very tired but happy to be in Nithville. I visited with Rick Hall a couple of weeks ago. He seemed in good spirits. He still hopes to get in an extended care facility in Waterloo. That s it for now. Have a good holiday season. SICK & VISITING DIRECTOR DON BALCARAS 5

SPECIAL EVENTS The Special Events World has been busy!!! As many of you know, we hosted the Annual General Meeting for the Royal Canadian Naval Association during the last weekend of September. We had about 20 delegates and guests join us from across Canada for a nice weekend. We also enjoyed the comeback of our annual NavyFest featuring Dianne and the Cavaliers on Thanksgiving weekend. Thanks to all who joined us that day. After a few years of not having the event, we weren't sure how it would be received. We're happy to say that attendance was good and we've gone ahead and booked the band for next year to see if we can build upon this years crowd. We had the addition of a Face Painter here this year for the young kids and that was a hit...even some of the 'young at heart" had their faces glittering with designs! Mark your calendar for Sunday October 8th for NavyFest 2017!!! Looking ahead we will be hosting our 5th annual Christmas Potluck on Sunday December 11th, 2016 here in the clubroom & hall. We're pleased to announce that shipmate Jim Fraser and his band "The Tiroler Brass" will be providing the entertainment for this years potluck. We'll kick things off at about 2:00 pm, with dinner service beginning around 4:30 pm. This is a 19+ event but you are encouraged to bring your family, friends and neighbours to join us for a great day! Thanks to the few club members who support our events with pride. It doesn't go unnoticed and we appreciate your support! SPECIAL EVENTS CO-ORDINATOR TERRI-LEIGH SAUNDERS SERVICE OFFICER Our sincere condolences to the Campbell family on the passing of Gord Campbell. Gord had a rough time this past year but he and Olive managed to drop into the club when they could. Gord was a mechanical engineer for 25 years at 6

Canadian General Electric. Gord worked on a number of problems at that time. Gord and I were also involved in the girls sport of Ringette as coaches. His team had a national and a couple of provincial championships. I was pleased to see some other coaches and naval members at the memorial. Gord and Olive were members of the Steinmann Mennonite Church in Baden after leaving Waterloo a number of years ago. Gord passed away in Lisaard House in Cambridge, Ontario. Gord was a well respected member of 35 years here at the K-W Naval Association. He will be missed at our club. We will remember him. SERVICE OFFICER JACK GOUGH SPORTS DIRECTOR Shipmates On September 17th, 2016 we were the host for the Annual Sports Day. I must say that this was a fantastic day from start to finish. Without the volunteers it would have been impossible to hold such an event. I would like to thank all of the members who volunteer and made things happen during the sports events, to the cooks on the BBQ, setting each sports event before the games begun and to the Ladies Auxiliary for a great dinner at the end of the day. With the Sports Day being my first, I was able to meet and talk to a number of members from Brant County, Oxford County and Sarnia Clubs, and had a lot of laughs with the members even though we had rain, it didn t affect the spirit of the members participating in each sport. Oxford County will be the host next year and I do look forward to being able to participate. Below are the events that we as club were able to win and a Big Congratulations to all of the players who were able to bring medals back to our club. Also to those players who participated who were able to have a day of fun and comradeship with our guests. Bowling Gold Medals: Frank Kossuth, Claire Ooms, Steve Keller, Cindy Weber, John Coxon, and Terry Hartman. Horseshoes Silver Medals: John Forget and Pam Slik Barrager. 7

Men s Darts Gold Medals: Harold Dyck and Jon J B Hatt. Bronze Medals: Phil Reitzel and Tony Legg. Ladies Darts Silver Medals: Connie Vitel and Joan Petrie. Congratulations again to all of our medal winners. The Cock of the Walk was won by Oxford County with a total of 22 points. Let s see if we can take the Cock of the Walk next year. Coming up over the next number of weeks will be the World Series pool and the Grey Cup. Also in January 15th 2017 will be the 5th Walter Harvey Memorial Shuffleboard Tournament. And of course the Super Bowl Party, not sure of the date so please watch out for the posters and most important is to come to these events and have some fun. SPORTS DIRECTOR GORDON MOORE NEVADA DIRECTOR Nevada sales remain steady as usual. Reports have been submitted and Heather (of the city of Waterloo) has no complaints. She has agreed that the chairlift is an appropriate expense and good for the mobility of seniors in the club. We are on the second half of our third license of the fiscal year, NEVADA DIRECTOR DOUG SINGBIEL 8

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of beginning of the Battle of the Atlantic here are some quick facts: The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous battle of the Second World War and one in which Canada played a central role. The battle began on the opening day of the war in September 1939 and ended almost six years later with Germany s surrender in May Between 1939 and 1942, the Germans increased their number of U-boats (submarines) from 30 to 300, causing tremendous challenges for the Allies. Nearly 400 Allied ships were sunk between January and July 1942, while only seven Uboats were lost, putting the supply link between North America and Europe at great risk. The remarkable growth of Canada s navy coupled with vast improvements in technology would turn the tide of the battle in its favour. From 1941 to 1945, Canadian shipyards produced approximately 403 merchant ships, 281 fighting ships, 206 minesweepers, 254 tugs and 3,302 landing craft. And some quotes: "The more than 4,600 Canadian men and women that never returned home after the Battle of the Atlantic were everyday citizens who became heroes by standing up for what our great nation believes in peace, freedom and the rule of law. Today we honour their legacy by sharing their stories and remembering their sacrifices." - The Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs "The Battle of the Atlantic would prove to be an unrelenting clash during the Second World War. Our sailors and airmen demonstrated incredible heroism by putting their lives at risk in order to keep trade lines open between North America and Europe. Their sacrifice may have ultimately been one of the most important contributions to victory and, for that, we are eternally grateful." - Royal Galipeau, Member of Parliament for Ottawa Orléans The struggle for victory over Hitler hinged on getting men, weapons, fuel and food from Britain and the United States to every front line. For Dönitz, whose U-boats were attempting to sever the British lifeline across the Atlantic, it was a truth that gnawed at his very being. - Jonathan Dimbleby, The Battle of the Atlantic: How the Allies Won the War The Battle of the Atlantic was the dominating factor all through the war. Never for one moment could we forget that everything happening elsewhere, on land, at sea or in the air depended ultimately on its outcome. - Winston Churchill 19
