1 Tidings from December 2017 Volume 59, Number 1 From the Pastor Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, The mood that usually marks the Christmas season is one of joy and celebration. The following hymn verse expresses another mood and feeling of the Advent and Christmas season. Let all mortal flesh keep silence, And with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly minded, For with blessing in his hand Christ our God to earth descending Comes full homage to demand. (ELW, 490) The awesome gift of God s presence among us demands such wonder and awe. When we take time in the midst of our Christmas celebrations to contemplate the nature of God s gift to us, the presence of His own person in the form of Mary s Son, Jesus, such reverence and awe may well be the mood that also captures us at this season of the year. May your experience of this Christmas be one of joy and happiness as well as reverence and awe. Your Christmas observance will be richer for it. Pastor Mary Gilthvedt Δ You are invited to the 2017 Sunday School Christmas Program Wednesday, December 20 6:15 pm Bring some Christmas goodies to share to following the program. 6 Roseau County Treatment Courts kick off Christmas Food and Coat Drive Court Participants Give Back Roseau County Treatment Court participants will be collecting nonperishable food items, toiletries, and gently used or new winter gear in the month leading up to Christmas for distribution to families in need around Roseau County. This Food and Coat Drive is part of a larger effort of the Treatment Court participants to benefit the communities they live in and engage in pro-social behavior as part of their work toward rehabilitation and recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. Hunger is prevalent in Minnesota one in ten people are at risk of being hungry. Those who experience food scarcity are often employed, are children, or are vulnerable medically. For many of those faced with lack of food, tough decisions have led them to hunger they prioritize housing, transportation, medical care, or utilities over putting food on the table. This choice becomes even tougher during winter months when heating costs further stretch tight budgets. The cold weather also brings with it the need for weatherappropriate clothing, especially for children. The lives of addicted persons often lack opportunity to engage in their communities in a positive way. As a part of their journey toward living drug and alcohol free, they must address many facets of their lives, including becoming a participating, productive member of their community. This community service project offers the Roseau County Treatment Court participants a chance to benefit their own recovery, to help their neighbor, and to fight against hunger in Minnesota. The Roseau County Treatment Courts are judicially supervised court dockets that reduce correctional costs, enhance community safety, and improve public welfare. There are two Treatment Courts: the Roseau County DWI Court and the Roseau County Drug Court. In these programs, seriously addicted individuals are closely supervised and must meet obligations to themselves, their families, and society. To ensure accountability they are regularly and randomly tested for substance use, required to appear frequently in court for the judge to review their progress, rewarded for meeting goals, and sanctioned for not meeting clearly stated obligations, such as completing treatment, remaining crime-free, or maintaining sobriety. Research continues to show that treatment courts work better than jail or prison, better than traditional probation, and better than treatment alone. They save significant taxpayer dollars and reduce crime associated with drug and alcohol use. Donations should be dropped off at the designated area at Zion Lutheran Church by Sunday, December 17 and a volunteer will bring them to Roseau. Or, you may bring donations directly to the Roseau County Courthouse, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Food items collected will be distributed to the 6 Roseau Area Food Shelf and the Warroad Area Food Pantry. There is also a need for household items like toilet paper, paper towels, and cleaning supplies. Toiletry items are also in great demand: shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and deodorant are suggested items. Donations of clean, well-cared for winter gear (coats, snow-pants, boots, hats, gloves, and scarves) will also be accepted and will be distributed to children and adults in need through community partners. Items for young children are especially needed. Contact Laurel Lawson, Treatment Court Evaluator, with questions. She may be reached at or laurel.lawson@courts.state.mn.us. Δ Advent Event to be held December 3 by Julie Jones Save the date to attend the Women of Zion s Advent Event on December 3 at 6:00 pm. There will be a potluck dinner followed by a short program. The ladies and their guests will be asked to bring a non-perishable food item to the Advent Event for the Warroad Food Pantry. Join in on the $5.00 gift exchange and participate in the many service projects, as you choose. Some of the projects the women s group supports are: We Care, Lutheran World Relief, Warroad Food Pantry, church ministries, and community projects. The Warroad Food Pantry is in particular need of canned meats (not homeprocessed), pasta, and spaghetti sauce. All ladies and teens are welcome to invite a friend or several! Secret pals will exchange Christmas gifts and draw for a new secret pal for the upcoming year. Δ

Wayne and Sharon Smith took the 78 quilts that were completed to Roseau on Friday, November 3. The quilters want to thank Muriel Olson for putting together ten of those quilts. Thanks to Delores Saul for sewing so many of our tops. Can Am Inn has been very generous by donating mattress pads from the motel to be used for filler in our quilts and last year donated quilted bedspreads that we used for filler which saved us from purchasing polyester fill. Also, thanks to all who donated fabric, thread, and sheets. Thanks to those who spent time working on the quilts at the Community Center and those who sewed at home and donated their tops to our project. At their September meeting, Rebecca Circle put together 80 school kits from the supplies that were donated. The school kits, 31 personal care kits, and 19 pounds of soap were packed and delivered to Roseau. Thanks to everyone who donated school supplies, personal care kit supplies, quilting supplies, and bars of soap. We could not have put together any of our LWR projects without your support. We are still accepting donations for all of our projects. There will be another shipment next spring. Quilting supplies can be left at the church. Supplies for the school kits, personal care kits, and packaged soap can be placed in the baskets on the table near the entrance. Δ
